Only one team made the final eight in 2018 and 2019

The NFL’s 12-team playoff field typically undergoes significant turnover. The final eight teams feature an almost complete overhaul from last year’s quarterfinalists.

Seven of the eight teams that played in last year’s divisional round won’t be back: the Colts, Chargers, Patriots, Cowboys, Rams, Saints, and Eagles.

The new seven are the Titans, Texans, Ravens, Vikings, Seahawks, Packers, and 49ers. The only holdover? The Chiefs.

It’s the kind of extreme turnover that makes the NFL more interesting, and that gets fans to embrace the notion that, in any given year, they’re only one year away from turning things around.

  2. Early in the year, I said Mahomes and Jackson are the new wave and style in the NFL. Out with check-down Brady and noodle-arm-late-in-the-year Brees. Of course, I got a zillion thumbs down. Whose laughing now? Ahahaha…

  3. @therealjr

Browns had the talen this year. They lacked coaching.

They always lack something, but it’s usually a lot more than coaching.

The Browns could very well be in the playoffs next year: they’re really only missing (1) competent head coach.

  4. Making what the Patriots have been able to do for so long so impressive. Whatever happens from here, wherever it goes, what a ride! Go Patriots! Go New England! #bradyreturns

  5. The biggest celebration the Jets have had was reminiscing about the Suber Bowl which just past its 50th anniversary. Such a sad franchise and just like the year we got Obrien instead of Elway, Kelly or Marino, it looks like Josh Allen and Lamar are light years ahead of Darnold. The sufferiong continues….

  6. We’ll see very shortly how “diehard” all those Pats* fans really are. Lol

  7. Glorified WWE. I learned just how seriously to take this all after last year.

  8. If the Patriots have proved anything, it’s that making the “final anything” is more about cheating than it is about strengths and strategies of any other sort. Turns out that the NFL is poised to discipline the Patriots for Spygate 2 within the next two weeks (or so). Imagine that.

Would be awesome if he had in helping them win. BB is far beyond your football knowledge, it is hilarious.

The D executed the gameplan beautifully, especially after that first drive.

The Pats lost like your Canucks to the Bruins in ‘11 due to Brady, bad McDaniels playcalling in spots and offense, not defense.

    Learn the game.

  10. Love it though, with the Patriots loss that means the Bills are still the only team to appear in 4 straight Super Bowls!

  11. This is awesome and it should give hope to every team. Look at the 49ers. They have been competing with the Redskins, Browns, Cardinals, and Bengals for the worst franchise in football. They brought in Kyle Shanahan and gave him a six year contract. They had a few good players, but then they added a few more and a QB and now they look as good as anyone. Just 3 years. Reminds me of the glory years. Every team should have faith that they’re only 3 years away, if they hire the right guy.

  12. 20 years ago there was no such thing as a die hard Pats fan. Then they started cheating and now everyone in NE is like “I’ve been a pats fan for my whole life!”

    Lies.

  13. Falcons were 6-2 in the second half of the season, and damned if they probably could’ve made the NFC championship game before choking badly.

  14. Note2al:

    WE’RE laughing now.

Championships won by Brady or Brees (7)
Additional Super Bowl appearances by B or B (3)

Super Bowl appearances by Mahomes or Jackson: 0 (anf counting)

  15. Out if all the new teams, I have one question, the same question Booger McFarland has, who is going to make a play?

First of all, we are supposed to be impressed with them cheating?

Second, you say all that now.
But this is just the starting of their dynasty crumbling.
Wait until it’s a SB drought for the next five years and then more and more years to follow.
Then those six SB “wins” are going to look more and more pitiful as other teams surpasses them.
Hell, the Packers already have with 13 NFL championship wins.

  17. And the NFL will do whatever it takes to ensure that turnover. What else besides money explains all the terrible calls, the system put in place to correct said bad calls, and nothing changes, the bad calls continue, and often in a very suspicious manner.

  18. LOL. The Patriots still finished 12-4 and nearly qualified for a bye after gutting their whole offense.

There’s no place to go but up for them.

They lost Gronkowski and replaced him with 3 practice squad caliber players (Lacosse, Izzo, and Gunner O) and a 15 year vet who came out of retirement (Watson).

They had no wideouts. They tried to recruit a few guys who were once talented but suffered some deal-breaking physical or mental handicaps: D. Thomas, J. Gordon, A. Brown. Sanu arrived too late in the season and spent the first couple weeks rehabbing an injury.

    Edelman played through injury.

First round draft pick Harry was on PUP through the first half of the season and did not get a chance to build a rapport with Brady.

Then there is the O-line. Trent Brown was lost in free agency and fitst round pick Wynn spent the first half of the season on injured reserve. Center David Andrews was lost for the whole season to injury.

On defense, they lost stud Trey Flowers to free agency.

Now … about the kicking game ….

  19. It all ends with the Chiefs winning the super bowl. No need to watch the rest of the playoffs.

  20. One more point about the Patriots. The coaching staff.

They lost defensive coordinator Brian Flores to Miami, who incidentally coached the Dolphins to that crucial bye-denying win over New England. O’Hara was also lost to Miami.

I don’t know who was coaching the team this year but it sure wasn’t Belichick. He was too occupied with that pet project of his. I have to tell you. I don’t know who should be credited with the stroke of genius, but inviying Belichick into a marquee role handing out awards for the 100th Anniverary team was the best way to neutralize him. I mean, he was AWOL from the draft day through free agency through the season.

  21. Patriot fans are losers, don’t believe me? Look at the comments on this thread. Sorry tylawspick6, but Goodell actually tried to help the Patriots cheat the Titans but Derrick Henry wasn’t having it….. actually your pathetic defence wasn’t having it either. They didn’t want to touch Henry.

I like this guy, knows the truth and isn’t afraid of speaking on it. 🤙🏻

  23. The HIGH TURNOVER of teams missing out the following season making the Playoffs yr after yr never cease to amaze. I already have a couple in mind that should be OUT next Season, Lets just say couple of these teams benefited from a Soft schedule while they struggle to beat teams 500 or better.

Never in my life have I heard anyone say giving up almost 200 yards rushing to a guy was part of the plan. Lmaooo

  25. Now that the Patriots have been clown stomped out of the playoffs, the NFL can get to the business of what happened to Cincinnati. This scandal is not going away and should be thoroughly investigated. My prediction is that Brady and Belicheat will be out of the NFL real soon.

  26. This die hard fan is enjoying a stress free playoff series for a change. No worries, despite all the false bravado, childish memes about cheating and whistling past the graveyard, it’s not over. You know it in your heart of hearts. Until he hangs them up, Brady is still top tier.

  27. All jokes aside, with the firing of Bruce Allen and hiring of Ron Rivera and several other coaching staff I pray that I get to see the Redskins glow up real soon. I was only 3 years old the last time the Redskins made it to the superbowl

  28. Quick quiz…which division left the playoffs first. You got it! The AFC Least! LMAO!!

Only team the Pats beat with a decent record was the Bills. And both the Pats and Bills are now out after the first round of the play offs. Maybe they were both awarded easy schedules.

  30. The NFL can get to the business of what happened to Cincinnatti

    +++

Maybe you didn’t hear. The investigation began and ended. The NFL was frustrated that they could find no connection between football operations and the video guy.

But, you knew that. Just trying to keep it alive, I take it?

  31. It does happen that some teams can turn things around after just one year, but there are teams that seem to be destined to be doormats because they have terrible ownership.
