PFT’s divisional round picks

Getty Images

Last week, MDS and I went 2-2 in the wild-card round, properly believing in the Texans and Seahawks but blowing it as to the Patriots and Saints.

This week, we agree on three of the four picks, with one of us having the guts to call for an upset.

Our picks for the best NFL weekend of the season appear below.

Vikings at 49ers

MDS’s take: The Vikings put on an impressive performance in New Orleans, winning a game that few thought they could. The 49ers, however, have been the best team in the NFC all season, and there’s little reason to believe that will change in the playoffs. Look for George Kittle to have a big game for San Francisco and the 49ers’ defense to shut down Kirk Cousins and the Vikings’ passing game.

MDS’s pick: 49ers 28, Vikings 10.

Florio’s take: Thirty-two years ago, Anthony Carter and the Vikings shocked the 49ers in San Francisco, six days after shocking the Saints in New Orleans. One year earlier, the Vikings stole a regular-season game in San Francisco with a 27-24 overtime win. Earlier this year, the 49ers lost their first game of the year, 27-24 in overtime. So what the hell? Lightning strikes all over again for the Vikings, who are good enough to keep it close and if they can keep it close anything can happen.

Florio’s pick: Vikings 27, 49ers 24 (OT).

Titans at Ravens

MDS’s take: The Titans will likely prioritize the running game and try to control the ball with Derrick Henry, but I just can’t see them slowing the game down the way they did against the Patriots. The Ravens’ offense is just too good, and the Titans’ defense won’t be able to stop it.

MDS’s pick: Ravens 30, Titans 20.

Florio’s take: The Titans are good enough to win this one. Much of it hinges on the ability of the offense to shorten the game and to keep the Ravens offense on the sideline. That will work, but not well enough to return the favor from 2008, when the top-seeded Titans fell at home to the Ravens.

Florio’s pick: Ravens 20, Titans 13.

Texans at Chiefs

MDS’s take: The Texans went to Kansas City and beat the Chiefs in the regular season, so it’s certainly not out of the question that they could pull the upset. But top to bottom I think the Chiefs are a significantly better team, on offense, defense and special teams. I like the Chiefs to win this one and I don’t see it being particularly close.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 35, Texans 20.

Florio’s take: For some reason, the Chiefs have faded from the collective national radar screen. They shouldn’t have. The offense is potent and the defense is improved. The Texans just don’t have the horses to keep up with the only team left in the postseason that made it this far last year.

Florio’s pick: Chiefs 31, Texans 20.

Seahawks at Packers

MDS’s take: The Packers caught a break when the Saints got upset by the Vikings. I believe the Saints match up very well against the Packers and would have won in Green Bay. The Seahawks, however, have a weak run defense that will allow Aaron Jones to have a big game, and the Packers will win this one and head to the NFC Championship Game.

MDS’s pick: Packers 20, Seahawks 17.

Florio’s take: A Vikings win on Saturday will give the Packers a psychological boost, since they won’t have to return to San Francisco. This makes the Packers more likely to win, setting up the first ever Vikings-Packers border war with a berth in the Super Bowl riding on the outcome. (If the 49ers win Saturday, the Seahawks become more likely to prevail.)

Florio’s pick: Packers 24, Seahawks 21.

  2. Hi Mike. I too believe the Ravens will beat the Titans, but I don’t see the Titans holding the Ravens to 20 points. I actually see the Ravens getting a score on defense and beating the Titans handily.

    Ravens 35
    Titans 17

  3. Packers fan here, i think they’re lucky to face a team so hit by injuries and will win another ugly one. If Minnesota does pull the upset, it sets up well for a stinker of a loss to the Vikings. Beating any team three times in a year requires skill and luck, even at home.

  4. not a vikings fan by any means, but if there was a time to wear the white jerseys with the white pants this is it. white on white vs the scarlet and gold will look pretty sweet.

  5. In a lot of ways this week is much less daunting than last week for the Vikings. The Saints had a Super Bowl coach and QB and an extensively playoff tested roster. The 49ers despite earning the No. 1 seed have a head coach and QB each in their first playoff game and a roster with very little playoff experience. The dominoes are lining up kind of nicely for the Vikings.

  6. The last 3 times the 35 million dollar dude played in Mister Rodger’s neighborhood, he got beat 27-17 (2015), 38-10 (2016) and 17-9 and he has an average passer rating of 60.4 for those 3 games. No wonder the 12 think he can win this weekend. LOL

  7. “Look for George Kittle to have a big game for San Francisco and the 49ers’ defense to shut down Kirk Cousins and the Vikings’ passing game.”

I can’t remember the last time the 49ers defense shutdown, or even controlled, ANY passing game, or running game for that matter.

They’ve been atrocious for a while now.

Monochrome looks in football are almost always worse than their regular unis. Contrast is a good thing.

  9. Ravens 24 Titans 20 can’t see Lamar going one and done twice in a row. Chiefs 31 Texans 17 blowout win for the Chiefs due to the run game. 49ers 38 Vikings 31 high scoring shootout with Emmanuel Sanders being the difference. Finally, Packers 27 Seahawks 21 Seahawks are too beat up.

  10. It will be deja vu all over again. Vikings win their first playoff game with a last second TD, and then they get blown away by the eventual Super Bowl winner the next game. Only difference is that they have a different quarterback this season.

  11. Packers have done well against Seattle at home lately. I like them to win.

I don’t see MN winning but they certainly have the talent to do so.

  12. The Vikings regular away combo is white/white. However, throwbacks to the 1987 white/white combo would be sweet but I don’t believe that is in the current mix of throwbacks.

  13. First: Beat the Seahawks. Second: I’d rather not see the Packers play the Vikings again. It’s extremely difficult to sweep any team during the regular season. The odds are against a third victory over any team in any one given year, especially in the postseason. But if they do, they do. You have to play whoever they send.

With that being said, say hello to the leagues number one pass defense, the 49ers. Oh, and 3 starters that have been out for weeks are returning to the lineup this week too.

Hawks fan typing…and while I certainly think they CAN pull off the win at Lambeau, calling GB ‘fraudulent’ is a giant stretch. You don’t win 13 games by accident. Not to mention this is probably the best D they’ve have since Rodgers has been around (or at the very least close to it) and unfortunately Russ has never won at Lambeau.

Gonna be a cold, ugly war.

That hard to beat a team three times in a season thing is a myth. You know why? Typically, the team that lost the first two games is just not very good.

  17. Historically, at least one home team loses on Divisional Round Weekend. The 49ers just strike me like the kind of team who could come out rusty and lay an egg.

    Vikings
    Ravens
    Chiefs
    Packers

  18. I didn’t pay much attention to the Vikings this season, but now I think it would be terrific if they could make it to the Super Bowl.

There’s just something about the team and their fans that makes me hopeful for a successful playoff run for them.

Yeah those poor ol’ Seahawks can’t catch a break lmao

  21. The Vikings caught the Saints off guard, and they were able to win because New Orleans simply underestimated them and didn’t play to their potential. San Francisco saw the events of Wild Card Weekend, and they will not be caught off guard by Minnesota. Shanahan has had 12 days to prepare; Zimmer has had 5. This will absolutely matter this week.

  22. I’m really surprised how many people think the Titans will hang with the Ravens. Maybe people are still riding high from beating an inept Patriots team? It will be a whole different story when they come to Baltimore and get punched in the mouth.

    Ravens 35 Titans 17

  23. I’m really surprised how many people think the Titans will hang with the Ravens. Maybe people are still riding high from beating an inept Patriots team? It will be a whole different story when they come to Baltimore and get punched in the mouth.

Agree completely. The titans are just going to rely too much on Derrick Henry and the Ravens will load the box forcing Tannehill to win with his arm which he won’t. This has blowout written all over it.

  24. I’m not going to lie, the AFC playoffs seems boring and anti-climactic now that the Patriots are gone.

  25. Way I look at it is simple. Rodgers got 4000 yards being a washed up has been. At least that’s what the experts are saying . I beg to differ. If he gets hot, and your only kidding yourself if you think that’s not possible, they’re gonna win the NFC.

I guess what I find ironic is at least 5 teams, ( KC, the Pats, the Raven, the Saints and the Niners), have been deemed the best team ever, 2019 edition. I find it equally ironic that the much maligned NFC north got a pretty good chance of representing the NFC.

As a Pack fan, not too many people had them over .500 this year. I was hoping for 10 wins. Way I look at it is they’re playing with house money. Let the fun begin

  26. I know I’m looking way ahead here and a Packers winning the next two will be very difficult, but a rematch of Super Bowl I of Chiefs-Packers would be fun to watch in the NFL’s 100th season.

    Guessing Purple

  31. Come on Florio, why did you pick the Vikings? It’s awesome when all the supposed “experts” pick teams then it blows up in your face. Like last week when everyone picked the Saints?

  32. Seahawks have to thank Minnesota for taking out the Saints. Seattle getting an extra day off with the weather being pretty calm just slightly chilly in Green Bay is a couple positives. When they do take the field Sunday, it’s all right in front of them….either a home game against the Vikings, or the chance to take out Clara in a rubber match. No excuses not to be ready to play. Seahawks 29-26.

    Clara
    Ravens

    Seahawks

  33. “Monochrome looks in football are almost always worse than their regular unis. Contrast is a good thing.”

Yes. The Saints look like the Russian ballet in all white.

  34. Wait, if the Vikings lose in SF, then SEA is more likely to beat Green Bay? That makes zero sense. If being in a one-and-done playoff round is not enough “psychological boost” to play well enough to beat an injury-riddled SEA team, then there’s more to worry about in GB than who their opponent would be in the NFC Championship game.

  36. The Hawks are still a dangerous team and are being discounted by nearly everyone here. The Viking fans’ opinion doesn’t matter, as usual – you know which one I’m referring to.

Seahawks and Pack will come down to whomever has the ball last. It’s going to be that way because, in my opinion, of coaching experience.

Second, I’m picking the Vikings over the 9ers. Vikes are a good team particularly with Cook playing. An entirely different animal.

  37. I have no problem with somebody picking the 49ers to win, but an 18 point prediction is insulting. It’s twice as insulting after watching last weeks Vikings beat the Saints.

The 49ers went 3-2 down the stretch, and barely beat a banged up Seahawks team to avoid the 5th seed. You can’t just look at their 9-1 start and ignore their 3-2 finish.

I will grant you this. If the 49ers 17th ranked rush defense shuts down Cook and Mattison, and they have a lead, then the Vikings offense could indeed collapse.

I don’t know if this is true or if the Vikings just executed better. If it is true, that’s a pretty bad look for the coaching staff in NO. It’s the playoffs, teams should not be looking past any opponent.

  40. Teams have been throwing short passes and/or moving the quarterbacks out of the pocket to avoid Frisco’s gold rush. It will not be so easy with Dee Ford being healthy enough to play and Kwon Alexander roaming in the secondary and/or spying on the quarterback.

Ya, prepare to play the Seahawks or the Eagles. They didn’t plan on the Vikings winning. 43. Florio, thank you for taking the homer route and picking your favorite team to beat the 49ers. Now they can’t say, ‘NO ONE EXPECTED US TO WIN.’ On second thought …

  44. The most likely outcome of ravens titans is double digit win for the ravens. however upsets happen in the playoffs and its usually because the underdog has a great running game. So there is a chance

  45. “There’s just something about” a troll who feels the need to pretend he is Packers fan to try and make his little Vikings sound better.

  46. Not saying who’s winning as I believe these games are going to be just like last week – closely matched teams with the potential for every game to go into OT.

But if Florio is right about a Pack/Viking NFC Championship game, these message boards are going to be unbearable next week.

  47. LOL

    ——————————
So you’re saying the Seahawks are winning the Super Bowl? There’s no way the Packers would, they are the worst 13-3 team i’ve ever watched.

  49. In the NFC is pretty easy, which QB shows up. Good Kirk or bad Kirk, 350 yd Rodgers or 195 Rodgers, good Garoppolo or bad Garoppolo… Russel Wilson is always the same QB. Should be great games all around. I’ll watch both AFC games cause I love football, those matchups are fantastic.

And if what happened thirty years ago matters then next week (should they upset the 49ers) Cousins is going to throw a pass to C.J. Ham and he’ll get tackled at the one yard line as time expires and they lose in the NFC Championship. Again

  50. 59 years –

I find the Packers Vikings rivalry hilarious on this site. The Vikings fans in particular are relentless, entertaining and funny.

    I hope they win.

  51. The 9ers haven’t played very well for weeks now. last second fg loss at Ravens. Last second fg win vs Saints win. Last second loss vs Falcons. Last second win vs Rams. Last second non-PI / PC delay of game win vs Seattle.

The last 5 games SF have played, ALL have come down to the last second of the game. ALL 5.

No way SF blows out the Vikings. Jimmy G will throw picks, Griffen will strip sack fumble and it’s 1987 all over again. Remember Joe Montana getting benched at Halftime. I remember. Jimmy G follows suit.

    Vikes 27 – 9ers 23.

    Ravens 30 – Titans 17
    Chiefs 27 – Texans 13
    Packers 26 – Seahawks 20

    ———————–

  52. The Vikings and Packers snipers already think every single post is about the Vikings and Packers and if they’re both in the NFCC … well, I just won’t be scrolling to the comments for a week.

  53. Don’t much care about the AFC at this point. I don’t see how the Pack loses this weekend at home to a beat up Hawks team. I also am not certain the Vikes can pull off another road upset on the west coast, on grass, and against the 49ers defensive front that’s well-rested. I will say this, the Saints fans were pretty arrogant last week like some of the 49ers fans, and they are now weeping softly into their gumbo.

Yeah, great game plan. Keep the game close enough so the refs can find a play to give you the win.
    If I were a 49er fan, I’d be worried.
Not so much about a middling Vikings team, but the obvious league directive to finally manufacture a championship for them and their hideous fans.

  59. This is usually the week when all the home teams win because of getting the bye. I think Seattle has the best chance of the 4 visiting teams, but I think we have 1 vs 2 in both conferences when it’s said and done.

  60. “For some reason, the Chiefs have faded from the collective national radar screen”

No. They objectively have not. More talk has been made about the chance for the Chiefs to be in the superbowl than any other team I’ve seen. Of course, the Ravens get plenty of talk since they had the best record, but the Chiefs seem to be getting more love than any other team in the NFC or AFC. At least where I’ve been perusing… So they certainly haven’t “faded from the collective national radar screen”.

  61. “Given that Seattle displayed a great physical presence in its Wild Card win, a finesse Green Bay team should be worried about matching the Seahawks’ intensity in the trenches and now out on the perimeter.”

  62. Saints fan here. Teams who beat the Saints in a playoff game are 2-9 in the next playoff game. The only teams to win their next playoff game after beating the Saints were the 87 Vikings and the 2013 Seahawks. The team the 87 Vikings beat after the Saints? The 49ers. Could we see history repeat itself? Maybe you Vikings fans can correct me, but I don’t think this Vikings team is as talented as the 87 version. I have Niners, Packers, Ravens, Chiefs.

I love that a Viking fan spends his free time on Packer fanside. I’ve never been to a Viking website in my life lol.

  66. It doesn’t surprise me that some people are picking the Titans over the Ravens but the score predictions (Titans 24-20, 23-17, 20-17) are what amaze me. No way do the Titans hold the Ravens to so few points. IF the Titans win (which they won’t) they will need to drop at least 35 points on the Ravens. I just don’t see that happening.

  67. You were caught impersonating a Viking fan on here this past summer. 🤣

When will you do the same? I’ve only ever seen you talk Packers. The next time you say anything relevant to the team you supposedly root for will be the first time.

  68. Again and again people know the fix is in with teams like Greenbay and Sanfrancisco colluding with refs, other wise Seattle and Minnesota win easy.

  69. Hawks are beat up no doubt – I’d feel much better with Carson as tailback.

Having said that, Seahawks aren’t that bad vs the run when Diggs and Clowney play and they’re not playing a prevent defense like they were vs Philly.

Also, although the Hawks have struggled at GB, never to a team coached by Matt LaFleur. In fact I believe this is his first playoff game ever as a HC.

The Eagles decided to sell out vs the run in the first playoff game and it worked but cost them vs the pass.

The Niners played straight up and almost lost. In fact Hawks ran and passed well that game.

    What will GB’s strategy be?

I think Wilson + PC > Rodgers + LaFleur and expect another nail biter and hopefully a W.

  70. Aaron Rodgers 2019 QBR is lower than Fitspatrick, Tannehill, rookie Kyler Murry,Carr, Jameis Winston, rookie Daniel Jones, Baker Mayfield, Jacoby Brissett.
So let’s not pretend he is the old Rodgers playing today. He hasn’t been right in the last 3 years.
And Rodgers has always been a front runner. Not counting this year.
Rodgers has had 42 opportunities to stage a fourth-quarter comeback, and has found success in 12 of them, a 28.6 percent win rate, which ranks 54th out of 84 qualifying QBs. In Rodgers MVP year he was 0-1 in 4th quarter comebacks.

“Shanahan has had 12 days to prepare, Zimmer 5”.

Ya, prepare to play the Seahawks or the Eagles. They didn’t plan on the Vikings winning. But anyway, the Vikings simply had a great game plan
    ……….
Yeah, great game plan. Keep the game close enough so the refs can find a play to give you the win.
    If I were a 49er fan, I’d be worried.
Not so much about a middling Vikings team, but the obvious league directive to finally manufacture a championship for them and their hideous fans.

Has to be a Cowboy or Packer fan, no other fan base is that annoying.

  76. Thanks Mike for having a picture of the best Carter WR the Minnesota Vikings ever had AC #81.

  77. And… 32 years ago the Redskins knocked off those same Vikings in the NFC Championship game.

  78. Anyone who thinks they don’t like Lynch – google the video of him on the bench telling Homer he had to sit between Lynch and Turbin to “break up their age”.

Otherwise it feels like you’re a youngster visiting us at a old folks home.

  79. 2019 has been the year of first time champions. Raptors in the NBA, Blues in the NHL and Nationals in the NHL. NFL will follow suit. Texans, Titans, and Vikings will all advance. One of these teams will be the super bowl champ. Packers will be the only home team to win this week. Last week Texans were the only home team to win.

  80. Absolutely great matchups in this round. The thing is, if you rank them one to four, all of these teams led the league in rushing and have strong defenses. Which proves once again the old adage, football is a running game. It’s not called armball for a reason. And defense wins championships.

Ultimately, though, it will come down to coaching, game planning and play calling. Those first round byes and home field advantage matter a lot now. Two teams are rested, plus they have game film on their incoming opponents from the wild card and additional time to prepare. But there won’t be any blowouts; these are all going to hard fought, close games . . . and any team can beat any team on any given game day.

Can Minnesota win in San Francisco? Sure, but it’s going to be tough. Zimmer has the Vikings playing at an exceptionally high level, however Shanahan has the 49ers playing at an exceptionally high level as well, despite their late season slide. Forget the quarterbacks, this game will come down to the running backs and defenses. While I ordinarily would favor the 49ers at home, because of their defense, I just think Zimmer is a better coach than Shanahan. Not that I think Cousins is a better quarterback than Garoppolo, they’re about the same, but I’ll agree with Florio and pick the Vikings in an upset.

Can Seattle win in Green Bay? Sure, but it’s going to be really tough. It’s very hard to win at Lambeau Field, especially in January. Rodgers is on a mission, as is Wilson. Both are Super Bowl quarterbacks, and each wants another. The question becomes, is LaFleur a better coach than Carroll? We shall see. The latter has won a Super Bowl, while the former has never appeared in one. This game could go either way. I find it hard to bet against Green Bay at home. So I’ll take the Packers, although the Seahawks could surprise in an upset.

Can Tennessee win in Baltimore? Yeah, but it’s going to be really, really tough. The Titans are playing good football, but the Ravens are an onslaught. I don’t see an upset here, so I’ll go with Baltimore.

Can Houston win in Kansas City? Absolutely. They have before. Since I live in Texas, I haver to root for the home team. Normally that would be Dallas, but the Cowboys totally suck. The Texans, however, are fielding a winning team. It’s an odd twist of history, but the AFC Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs. The AFC Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Titans. Strange, isn’t it, that the old Dallas Texans will be playing the new Houston Texans in the playoffs.

    My speculations are:
    49ers
    Packers
    Ravens
    Texans

  81. Cheifs and Packers will meet in the Super Bowl. 100 year anniversary of the NFL. Super Bowl 54 will feature a rematch of Super bowl 1. Just what the league wants. Watch and see.

  82. The 49ers defense hasn’t exactly looked great since week 8, there could be an upset coming._____________

They also play offense in the NFL. How was the Niners offense looking? 5 of their last 8 games were also against 11 win Seahawks twice, two 13 win teams, and a 14 win team. Don’t let numbers fool you. Watch their games. They ball out and they have 3 defensive starters returning.

  83. Should be a great weekend of football. Here’s an idea: let’s declare them all winners! Instead of the Super Bowl, there can be a parade at the stadium featuring all of the teams congratulating each other on a fantastic season. I think this would be a great send off to the NFL’s 100th season.

  84. I like that the Sunday games start later this year. Not really sure why. Football just seems more exciting later in the day.

Maybe you Vikings fans can correct me, but I don’t think this Vikings team is as talented as the 87 version. I have Niners, Packers, Ravens, Chiefs
    ——————————————

As a Viking fan that remembers that Viking team and game vividly I can tell you the Vikings got hot at the end of that year with a backup QB (Wade Wilson). The Vikings offensively are more talented today than that team. The Vikings had the #1 defense in the league in the late 80s so maybe today’s defense isn’t quite as good. But I can guarantee you today’s 49ers aren’t as good as Bill Walsh and Joe Montana’s 49ers.

  86. Vikings could win — they are talented. If Zimmer the Mad Scientist comes up with a way to neutralize George Kittle, watch out.

Seahawks will be a tough out for my Packers, but I think the Packers will win. Heavy pass rush will eventually get to Russ.

Ravens and Chiefs in the AFC. Should be fun.

  87. I think Chiefs and Ravens win comfortably, Packers game will be close bit I think the Packers will sneak it. Obviously I hope I’m wrong but I think the 49ers win and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a blow out.

  88. As a Packers fan, I would love to see the Packers beat the Seahawks and the Vikings beat the Niners so that the Vikings return to Green Bay to play in the NFC Championship game.
Then nothing would please me more than for the Packers to beat the Vikings and get to the Super Bowl while destroying the Vikings fans hearts again.
Unfortunately, the Vikings will not beat the Niners. The Niners defense will completely shut down Dalvin Cooks and then force the human turnover — Kurt Cousins — into at least two picks and a fumble.
    So — Packers 26 Seahawks 20
    Niners 23 Vikings 16

  89. As for the AFC, I am hoping for two upsets — and have the Titans and Texans win. But it won’t happen.
It will be the Chiefs and Ravens in the AFC Championship game.

  90. San Francisco isn’t the most talented team of the bunch, but they are the guttiest and got the most heart.I think they take it all.

  91. As various people point out, the Vikes in 1987 went out to SF and won in a huge playoff upset. It was a great moment for the franchise. But there’s no basis at all for seeing that game as a precursor to this weekend. In fact, that game might work the other way — it’ll be mentioned often to the Niners as they get ready for Saturday.

As to Gentleman Jimmy not having any playoff experience – sheesh, he’s been playing in big huge games since he was 8 years old. I would guess that 20 years of big games would be useful for him. He knows what nerves feel like. He was born for this game.

As a Vikings fan I’m sorry to say it, but this will be a rugged and disappointing weekend for us. (I truly hope I’m wrong, needless to say.)

The Packers probably won’t win this weekend, and they will lose to the 49ers or the Vikings. The vikings got beat during the regular season, but it’s really hard to beat a team 3 times. Also MN is playing their best football right now.

That hard to beat a team three times in a season thing is a myth. You know why? Typically, the team that lost the first two games is just not very good.

    —–
Not true. You know why? If a team is playing another for a 3rd time, that means both teams are at least in the Top 6 of their conference.

  94. I have no horse in the race, but like the Seahawks, I dont think Green Bay is for real. I also think Baltimore will win by a much larger margin and wouldent be surprised to see RG3 the whole second half.

  95. This will be the game where the Packers come out and play great football for all four quarters like they did against Minn to win the NFCN.Rodgers gets in a groove and throws for 400 yards while AJ scampers for 125 and the defense makes life hell for RW. Packers 37 Seahags 13.

    ——————–

Care to explain 2004? Packers swept the Vikings, and the Vikings eliminated the Packers in the playoffs. it is hard to beat a team 3 times, because if there is a 3rd time..it’s in the playoffs…to be in the playoffs you have to be good.

  97. FYI, it’s not hard to beat a team 3x. NFL playoff teams that face a division opponent, whom they’ve beaten 2x, win the 3rd at about a 65% clip.
