The Cowboys and Rams both covet the service of Stan Drayton as their running backs coach.

Hall of Famer Gil Brandt of NFL Media reports that the teams “appear to be a in a war” for Drayton.

Drayton is the associate head coach and run game coordinator at the University of Texas, where he has coached since 2017. He was with the Bears in 2015-16.

His only other NFL experience came early in his career with the Packers. He was assistant offensive quality control/special teams coach from 2001–2003 in Green Bay.

Drayton coached Ezekiel Elliott at Ohio State, where Drayton spent four seasons.

The Cowboys had Gary Brown as their running backs coach the past seven seasons, while Skip Peete coached the Rams’ running backs the past four seasons.

  1. McCarthy appears to be assembling a solid coaching staff the Cowboys have a real shot at being really good next year. If people thought the Browns hype was over the top last off season just wait for the Cowboys hype this year

  2. Texas, zero state taxes. Cali, well we all know that answer.

Jerry gets about a head start on that one.

  3. The choice should be easy, he wouldn’t have to move if he went to the Cowboys. There is still no state taxes in Texas, so that’s a plus. He also coached Zeke, who doesn’t have injury concerns like Gurley, so all signs point to the Cowboys.

  4. For those of you bringing up state taxes as an incentive, that is only true for 8 games. Whatever state games are played, the players have to pay income taxes for them. So, two-game checks will still be taxed in Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania if he goes to Dallas.

The Browns hype just started this year while the Cowboys hype has been going on since
Jerry bought the team some 30 years ago or so. So much for hype look how both teams
    turned out this season.

  6. If I was Stan I would go with the Cowboys. You know who your running back will be and I think long term employment is better. With coaches leaving the Rams, fired or voluntarily, something is going on there and McVay may not be there in two years. Fired head coach usually means fired assistants.

But then you’d still have to live in Texas. There’s a reason why they pay people to move to Texas. Ever been there?

  8. If people thought the Browns hype was over the top last off season just wait for the Cowboys hype this year
    _______
Given how the Browns’ hype worked out that’s not exactly a comparison one should want.

  9. It seems like when one team mentions they want to hire some coach then all of a sudden the Rams jump in and want to hire them too.

  10. Texas may have no state income tax but some places nickel and dime you to death. Florida taxes food and try selling a house. Most places find a way to make it up or they cut services. Some places are over the top. California/Jersey/NY come to mind.

California’s cost of living far exceeds their absurd tax rate. Only worse place to live is Hawaii. A 2BD home on a postage stamp costs 1M plus in both places. No thanks.

I’d prefer whatever suburb is within 30 minutes of Jerry’s World. If you lived across the street from the new Kroenke World, it would take 30 minutes to get there.

  11. Really a “no-brainer” unless the rams offer a much larger contract. Who really wants to live and work in LA or California?
