Everson Griffen wants to stay with Vikings

The Vikings reworked defensive end Everson Griffen‘s contract ahead of the 2019 season and included a clause that would void the remainder of the deal if he recorded at least six sacks during the regular season.

Griffen had eight sacks for the Vikings, which means that he’s now on track for free agency after the team’s loss to the 49ers in Saturday’s divisional round game. Griffen isn’t looking to make a change, however.

Griffen noted the team sticking by him when he needed time away to deal with mental health issues in 2018 and said he hopes things work out in a way that allows him to remain with the Vikings.

“I want to be here,” Griffen said, via the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “I love this team. I love this organization. They took great care of me when I needed it the most. I want to be a Viking. We’ll see what happens.”

The Vikings fired defensive coordinator George Edwards on Sunday, so there are changes coming on that side of the ball in Minnesota. It remains to be seen if Griffen’s departure will be among them.

  1. I don’t know Griff, will probably need your cap space to sign some OL. With the DL stepping up like Ifeadi Odenigbo, Weatherly, and Watts, you probably won’t be back. Hate to see you go, but unless you sign for much less, this team needs OL.

  2. I hope he’s willing to stay, but it won’t be at the salary he’s been accustomed to in the past. The Vikings will need to re-sign Waynes and figure out how to re-up Dalvin Cook. Rhodes is probably gone which would free up some cap space.

That said, there are several young and promising prospects on the Viking DL, but they could also use an upgrade at DT for Shamar Stephen. It’s great that Griffen wants to stay, but I suspect he may have second thoughts when he gets an offer from them and/or another team.

Lots of changes coming for the Vikings. Not sorry to see Stefanski leave, and I hope the next OC has a better grip on the OL, and how to get the most out of that group.

  3. Its been known for years that players want to play for the Vikings and then stay with the the team.
    Better football for better people.
    Class organization of the NFL.
Also Vikings go into the off season in a enviable position. With all the studs already on the team there is no need to chase big $ FA’s. Just resign our own playmakers like Griffen and draft a OL, CB and then they can search for a few gems in the latter rounds at their own leisure.
    SKOL!

  4. Vikings need receivers who average more catches in the post season than their centers do…

    Diggs (cough)

  5. Great to listen this (or read it), they helped me, I am grateful. I want to stay.

I know, its business for teams and players, but as a fan, I like to see this kind of things

  6. It’s gonna be tough, but he did have a good year. I suspect the Vikes will be outbid by a large margin by another team.

I agree with everything you say Rod.. Unfortunately seeing those millions Spielman will try for a hot rod player than ANY we need on Offense! 1st round this year will go to a corner, Bank on it. 2nd Probably Safety or Linebacker, 3rd round either a DL or Wide receiver. We get no 4th (thanks Rick) for throwing another mid high pick away on a sack of S**T kicker, so we are in Ricks O-lineman picking area unless he thinks he needs another RB or TE, I see him trying to patch by trading a 5th for a 6th and extra 7th pick.. Vikings will NEVER get anywhere in the Playoffs unless there are 4 GOOD 1st round picks on the line especially the left Tackle.I’d like to see them go 3rd or 4th on a QB.. there is a lot of Talent in this years draft.
