The Lions have reportedly settled on a new defensive coordinator.

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the team is hiring Eagles defensive backs coach Cory Undlin to fill the position. Paul Pasqualoni stepped down after the end of the 2019 season.

Undlin’s first NFL coaching job was a defensive assistant with the Patriots in 2004 when Lions head coach Matt Patricia was also in his first year with New England. Undlin would move on to Cleveland and Denver before coming to the Eagles for the 2015 season.

The Eagles fired offensive coordinator Mike Groh and wide receivers coach Carson Walch last week, so they now have three spots to fill on Doug Pederson’s staff for the 2020 campaign.

  1. That was certainly an unexpected hiring. I’d say there is nowhere else to go but up for the Lions but they were only 31 out of 32 last year in defense so they are probably headed for the 32nd best defense and the first overall pick before firing Patricia.

I still don’t know how the Eagles lost to these guys. Oh yea, Nelson Agholar’s fumble in the open field with no one around him that was scooped up for a defensive TD.

  2. Well I’d like to be the first from Eagles nation to say thank you Lions for taking Undlin off of our hands. Honestly, not a single cornerback has progressed, flourished or showed any growth or promise under Undlin’s tutelage. As clueless as he looks in the attached picture, is how our corners looked under is guidance. Hopefully the Eagles can bring in a competent coach to teach our corners how to play. Once again, thank you to the Lions organization.

  3. Thanks Lions…..you just did the Eagles big favor! He is a lousy DB coach and I was hoping the Eagles would fire him this off season

  4. I just hope the Eagles go out and hire 3 great coaches to replace all of these guys who left. But knowing the Eagles they’ll drag their feet and then hire whoever is left.

  5. In 4 years with the Eagles, he could’t teach a corner how to turn around and defend a ball. Not sure if that’s on the corner’s or on him, but I guess we’ll find out.

  6. I thought Patricia was a defensive genius and that is why he was hired in the first place? I can’t see him staying as a head coach if he does not turn it around next year.
