Vikings let defensive backs coach Jerry Gray go

The changes to the Vikings coaching staff will go beyond the departures of their offensive and defensive coordinators.

The Vikings let defensive coordinator George Edwards go on Sunday and Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that defensive backs coach Jerry Gray is also leaving the team. Offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski took the Browns head coaching job on Sunday.

Gray joined the Vikings along with head coach Mike Zimmer in 2014, but the departure of Edwards was a signal that there will be some adjustments to that side of the ball.

Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune included Edwards and Gray on a list of assistants who could wind up in Cleveland working for Stefanski. Wide receivers coach Drew Petzing was the third member of the 2019 Vikings staff included in that group.

  1. DB was a weak link all year with the poor play of Rhodes and Waynes, so no surprises here.

  2. I have previously advocated for change on the Viking coaching staff but I meant at the very top. Getting rid of Cooridnators and Assistant coaches while keeping Zimmer is like re arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Despite the changes, the ship is still going down. Fortunately for the Titanic, it only sinks once, with the Vikings, its an annual event.

  3. I wonder if Tony Romo would be a good Offensive Coordinator, he seems to know what he’s talking about in the booth what plays are going to be called.

  4. LB’ers played well this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if Zimmer promoted his son to DC.

So we know now that the schemes aren’t going to change, he is going to find people to run them. Most likely he will promote the coordinators from within and go find a few replacements that will fall in line.

Now go cut the dead weight like Rhodes, Joseph, Elflein and upgrade those positions.

  5. Another fall guy. It’s your defense Zim. You are the one who wanted to waste a ton of top pics on CB’s. And they are playing your scheme. You are also supposed to be the CB whisperer. Maybe you’re the problem.

  6. Kirk Cousins plays the game scared!!!! That’s the problem!!!! With the horses y’all have on defense. Put Brees on that team , they are unstoppable.

  7. Interior defensive line couldn’t stop the run all this year. The DB’s are taking the brunt of people rants but… Joseph playing on one leg most of the year with Stephen were awful. As bad as the interior of the offensive line. Not many are even mentioning it.

  8. People need to settle down with canning Zimmer. You can lead a horse to water but can’t make it drink. I think he’s done a fine job of keeping this team in the hunt. I’d take 10-6, 11-5, a mediocre 8-8, etc. over the annual 5-11, 3-13, 4-12. Don’t forget there are 31 other teams that have the same goal as your team does.

The defense was elite for a couple years there, and has declined since. We had a window of opportunity, and 3 playoff seasons with a trip to the NFC title game as well. Make some big personnel changes this offseason, and reset. Green Bay, and San Fran we’re flat out better than us this year. Best of luck to them, and let’s go get them next year.
