Kellen Moore will call plays for the Cowboys

Mike McCarthy called the plays in Green Bay while he doubled as head coach. It was long assumed he would do the same in Dallas.

He won’t.

McCarthy convinced Kellen Moore to remain as offensive coordinator, and Moore will continue to call the plays.

“My plan is for him to be the play caller,” McCarty said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

Moore called the plays for the first time in 2019, and the Cowboys finished with the most yards in the NFL.

“Kellen was someone I was watching from afar, regardless of what opportunity worked out for myself,” McCarthy said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “The opportunity to work with Kellen was something I was going to pursue either way.”

McCarthy also said he plans to keep the offense’s terminology the same. He will learn team’s language not the other way around.

The Cowboys will continue to use a four-man front on defense, McCarthy said. Mike Nolan has coached both the 3-4 and the 4-3.

  1. Sounds like he was willing to agree to anything to get a head coach job again.

He’s turning into Jason Garrett 2.0. Jerry’s guys are still in control. Does Kellen report to McCarthy or directly to Jerry?

You might want to review how Garrett became coach of the Cowboys and don’t get comfortable in Dallas. You are just holding the fort until Jerry can promote Kellen.

  2. Dak just breathed a big sigh of relief. Seems like one of the surest ways to mess up a QB’s trajectory in becoming a good NFL passer is to switch offensive systems frequently. You have to give props to McCarthy for keeping the terminology the same even.

  3. Gee — McCarthy won’t have anything to do on game day because that’s all he ever did for the Packers. He didn’t know what defense and special teams were.
If the Cowboys are smart, they’ll have someone watching the time clock for him, too.

  4. Coordinators for McCarthy are fall guys. If the team under performs next year Kellen Moore will get tossed so Mike can “bring in his own guy”.

Called great plays against teams with losing records, different story when they played good teams.
    —————-
Or were they the perfect plays called and Prescott simply called an audible.

Over the course of the season, Prescott made several business decisions since he didn’t have a contract beyond the year.

  6. All it says is that he will call the plays. I’m sure there we be new plays and schemes added. This doesnt mean Mike won’t have any say on the offense at all.

  7. This a great move. Last year was Kellen’s first time calling plays. He was impressive and has an opportunity to improve in year 2. Not to mention the Garrett anchor is gone and McCarthy adding his touch will only help a young offense.

  8. DCs all over the League put their Cowboys file away and get out the files on offenses they can’t predict yet.

  9. Moore is Jerruh’s new Garrettt. Mac is just keeping the seat warm for a few years. I said it when McCarthy was hired, get good at saying this Mike: Yes Daddy! . I never thought much of McCarthy before but I always thought at least he was his own man but apparently not.

  10. Does that mean we won’t be subjected to constant close-ups of McCarthy clutching a laminated play card and covering his mouth like he is the smartest guy in the room like all these other putzes?

  11. McCarthy was a great HC because he had Brett Favre and then the great one Rodgers at QB, but Green Bay defense was always bad after they lost most of their star plays in free agency with the GM not replacing them through the draft or free agency. McCarthy is an HC that likes to be in control but we all know that it’s not happening in Jerry’s world. So if McCarthy wants to be HC it’s Jerry’s way or the highway. And we all know that McCarthy not getting the Panthers, Browns, or Redskins Head coaching job so it’s Jerry or nothing. Moore is about as good OC as he was a QB… So we know this is Jerry Jones calling the shots…

  12. No matter what Mike does everyone will keep saying the same things they are saying right here – That Jerry Jones is pulling all of the strings and controlling everything. So if the Cowboys suddenly become a force will it because Jerry finally got it right, or will McCarthy get any credit at all? You can’t have it both ways haters you have to decide is Jerry getting the credit when the Cowboys become a force over the next few years with McCarthy at the helm, or does McCarthy get the credit…Which will it be because the Cowboys are going to be in the playoffs next year, and I don’t even like that team, but McCarthy has what it takes to make them contenders even with Dak at quarterback

  13. Jerry’s man Moore is to McCarthy what Garrett was to Wade Phillips. Just more of Jerry’s same old, same old.

  14. I think it’s a good move. Kellen did a pretty good job as such a young coach in year 1 on the job. If he doesn’t show improvement McCarthy has experience to take over those duties down the road.

Except Moore in his first season as an OC was better than Garrett ever was. I think
Moore will get better as time goes by and by then Jerry may not be around anymore,
if Moore makes it to HC.

  16. I really think y’all have this wrong this time.. do you know how many coaches have reportedly been let go that are still under contract….

Jerry has never liked paying his employees for no value. Secondly take some time and listen to the “McCarthy project” in rebuilding his playbook he adopted alot of concepts from Kellen Moore and even telegraphed Kellen’s play as an idea of how he wants to his remade offense to look.

Finally… this is a coach with winning experience and options.. if he didn’t like the organizational structure of the cowboys……

HE DID NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT THE JOB!

For what it’s worth… the offense was the least of Dallas’ problems last season.. keeping the continuity on offense with a few adjustments and alterations in game planning should improve in the area where they struggled most.

  17. Lol funny how the ONLY coach to be retained from 2019 is Moore and everyone is like “nothing is changing”. Moore in his rookie OC and play calling year ran a top 5 offense and took a QB who everyone says can’t throw and he throws for almost 5k. The team had issues in 2019 but neither Moore or Dak were one of them. BTW McCarthy wanted Moore and was not forced to keep him. McCarthy put his own staff together if the other positions weren’t an indication.

  18. Man…this sounds ominous, but as a Cowboys fan I just need to trust that Mike knows what he’s doing. He has made some good moves already. He got ride of most of the staff. New thinking is needed! The fact that he kept Moore and will allow him to call plays may be a good thing. We’ll just have to wait and see. The fact that he is not changing the defensive front alignment is likely because they don’t have the personnel to play a 3-4. That’s just common sense.

You do realize that he has removed most of the staff now correct? Almost all of Garrets guys are gone. Moore may be the only hold over and thats because he likes analytics, Garret didnt even want to try it. Moore likes motion and creative thinking…

  20. Got to believe Jerry is calling the shots. Mike thinks he is an offensive genius and only gave up calling the plays for a while then took the job back. Also Mike wanted a 3 -4 defense in GB.

  21. Creativity….is not needed. RUN……THE…..BALL!! Not exciting but effective. Look at the Titans and Henry….who is making Zeke look bad. They will run over the KC defense. Mahomes….does not play defense and will not be affecting the game while sitting on the bench as the Titans burn the clock and score.
The interesting part will be seeing if SF defense will be able to stop Henry as they will certainly beat GB.

  22. The level of stupidity in some of these comments are hard to believe. Kellen Moore was considered by many in the NFL as an offensive genius. Not to mention that he won more games in college than any quarterback in history and he called his own play’s. This from a Kansas City Chief fan.

  23. Kellen Moores offense was #1 in 2019 in yards and 6th in points.. This is the NFL and that doesn’t just happen. The offense was #2 in DVOA (Measures the success of every play based on situation and the opponents strength.) Dallas was #3 in dropped passes, #3 on most penalized team on 3rd down, 31st worst average starting drive field position, the worst kicker in the NFL for the last 9 years, the offense got very little help from a disappointing defense that ranked #23 in turnovers. The Cowboys lost 2 games by more than 8 points. Amari Cooper had less than 250 yards in weeks 1-16. He was 4-12 against the Eagles for 24 yards and was constantly pouting. They are close but needed to fire Garrett and get this defense back to 2018 form. DLAW played hurt, and Tyrone Crawford was out all season. Get LVE back and a little help from the secondary and 2020 can be special. When do we hold players accountable for execution? Zeke had 2 chances for 2 yards against the Vikings and we’re blaming KM. Truth be told, it was confirmed that Travis Fredrick and Zach Martin had a miscommunication on the second attempt that allowed a defensive lineman to tackle Zeke for a 2 yard loss and fans still blame KM. Some of you idiots really would throw out the baby with the bath water. Our baby OC is not the problem
