XFL team claims Antonio Callaway

If Antonio Callaway wants to play football in 2020, his first chance will be in the XFL.

According to Scott Patsko of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the former Browns wide receiver was claimed by the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers.

Callaway lost his appeal of a 10-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy in November, the day after being released by the Browns. If he signed with an NFL team, he’d could participate in the offseason and preseason, but would need to serve the rest of that suspension at the start of the regular season.

He’s shown his ability to play, and had 51 catches, 675 yards and five touchdowns in 20 games for the Browns. But his off-field issues have continued to surface, prior to the suspension.

The XFL appears willing to give him a chance to get his career back on track.

  1. Unfortunately this young man looks like he’s going down the Josh Gordon “threw it all away” path.

  2. Hopefully he takes the opportunity and makes the most of it. I’m pulling for Antonio and the XFL to be successful.

  3. I’ll be surprised if he gets another shot in the NFL. Then again, some team desperate for talent will think they can change him just like the Patriots thought with AB and Josh Gordon. It might work for a little while but you can’t fix someone who feels no need to change. Fool me once….

  4. Josh Gordon at least showed he was a superstar first then crashed and burned. This kid didn’t get through his first training camp without an issue. That makes him much worse than Josh Gordon.

  5. Didn’t Oliver Luck say they weren’t interested in players with a questionable past? Humm, maybe not! I can’t wait to see that Viper-Renegade game! Say what?

  6. Browns just sabotage their own success by drafting guys like this. It’s not as if they can afford to throw away 4th round picks (or supplemental draft picks, Josh Gordon).

They need to start drafting some character guys or you will be stuck with nothing but me-first guys who won’t sacrifice for their teammates.
