The 49ers are going to the Super Bowl

The 49ers are going to the Super Bowl for the seventh time in franchise history.

Raheem Mostert scored four touchdowns and the 49ers defense shut out the Packers through the first half en route to a 37-20 win that made them this season’s NFC champions. They will go on to face the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV on February 2 in Miami.

Mostert eviscerated the Packers defense and finished the night with 220 yards on 29 carries. That’s the second-most rushing yards in a postseason game in NFL history and it is the most rushing yards for a player in any game in 49ers regular season or postseason history. Former 49er Ricky Watters is the only player in league history to run for five touchdowns in a playoff game.

With Mostert churning through the Packers defense, Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t have to do much in his first conference title game. He tried only three passes in the second half, including a pair of throws to tight end George Kittle after Green Bay cut their lead to 14 points. One was a 19-yard pickup and the other resulted in a defensive pass interference that resulted in a key first down for the Niners.

The Packers showed fight in the second half, but their miserable showing while falling behind 27-0 in the first half sealed their fate. Winning 14 games and getting this far was a strong showing for head coach Matt LaFleur in his first year, but they were outmatched on Sunday.

That’s been the case for many 49ers opponents this season and now the Chiefs are the only team standing between them and and the team’s first title since Steve Young led them to a win in Super Bowl XXIX.

  1. Wow, we’re devastated here. Just gutted. It’s too bad we had to face off with those guys. We haven’t been this shocked in Plainfield since 1957. I’m glad the Packers were able to dig up a few dead bones to save a little face. All of us Green Bay fans must feel like we were butchered.

  2. Congrats to the 9ers in their quest to tie the Steelers with six Lombardi trophies.

Don’t kid yourselves, Pats fans. You only have three that count.

Mahomes v. Bosa/Sherman should be a lot of fun to watch.

  3. Well, we were warned. And we still fell for it. Now we feel let down. Terribly. Let. Down. Because cheap doesn’t last.

  4. Super Bowl LIV is shaping up to be a much-anticipated game. Though the Chiefs may open as slight favorites, I’m not expecting a close contest here. I’ll be rooting for the Niners to take the Lombardi trophy. To do so, San Fran should consider implementing more man coverage, and mixing up pressure schemes against Mahomes. Exploit KC’s run defense. And “Jimmy G” will need to look less like “Jimmy GQ” and more like “Jimmy The Kid,” as he’ll need more passing attempts to blow some holes in the Chiefs’ secondary.

  5. Hats off to the 49ers. They have a very talented team. Chiefs – 49ers should be a good matchup.

It’s a disappointing end to the Packers’ season but I’m proud of this team of overachievers. Almost no one expected us to make it this far. NFC North title, 14 wins— can’t complain. Back at them next season. Go Pack Go!

  6. Congratulations to SF, they are a great team and clearly deserved to win. Should be a heck of a Super Bowl.
Great season for GB. Sweeping the Division and being in the final four isn’t bad at all. They need a few more pieces, and I think Gutekunst will get them.

  7. This super bowl is looking eerily similar to Seattle/Denver when Peyton had that crazy year. Wouldn’t be surprised if media and fans hype up KC and SF stomps them.

  8. Both of the winners today would beat their opponent 10 out of 10 times. The two best teams are definitely heading to Miami. For the rest of us, it’s back to the ‘ol drawing board.

    What’s this?
Another packer fan bragging about participation trophies?
    I’m stunned. 😳

  10. I cant wait to see who Rodgers blames for this debacle…. the receivers? the o line? the defence? special teams? the coaching?

the qb? no…definitely not the quarterbacks fault…..he only fumbled once and got picked twice….

go ahead Aaron, spin your wheel of blame, were all dying to see who you throw under the bus.

  11. Congrats to the Niners. Clearly the best NFC team. Good luck against the chiefs.

That was sad. But I’m happy the Packers got as far as they did and were one of the top 4 teams in the NFL. And they’ll be much better next year. Especially with 6 division wins in our pocket.

Also, thank God the Packers didn’t get destroyed 38-7, ensuring that they weren’t the worst 13-3 team in NFL history.

  12. While my gut instinct as a 49ers fan is to be terrified of Mahomes, I have a feeling the Super Bowl will go a lot like the SF vs NO game: a total shootout that comes down to whoever has the ball last.

  13. Much will be made about this being the future of football. Some fans (KC..cough.,… KC) will talk about this being the norm for the next 15 years. The difference is Jimmy G has his contract AND has a good team around him. When Mahomes gets his bank buster of a contract, what money will be left for all his weapons?

  14. Aaron Rodgers ONLY win in the NFCCG was over the Bears 3rd string QB, he blew it against the Seahawks and was BLOWN OUT by the Falcons and now the Niners. Rodgers a greatest of all time QB??? Give me a break…

  15. Poor A Rod’s case to be anything more than a top 8-14 QB is gone. Same with Brees. Amazing regular season QBs, fantastic players but not even close to Brady. If either one of them could win a 2nd Super Bowl they could surpass Peyton Manning, but I don’t think it’s mean to be. Even though Manning was literally a joke playing with Denver and “winning” his 2nd Super Bowl, the bottom line is that his 2nd win edges them out.
But Brady and then Montana have a gap between them and the others, and in fact I think Brady’s grasp on GOAT is actually widening every year. You realize how hard it is to win a Super Bowl, or two… let alone 6.
Mahomes has a chance to be special. Let’s see if he can make it happen. The Chiefs really have a poor D so it’s going to take a bunch of turnovers by Jimmy G for this to be the only kind of game the Chiefs can win against the Niners stout D, which is a shootout. Otherwise Niners win easily.

  16. Congrats 49ers. The better team won tonight.

And one positive came out of the game for the Packers. It was proven without a shadow of a doubt that Aaron Jones is the best RB in the division.

  17. “But hey, we only gave up 37 points and 220 yards on the ground.”
At least you still have your pride.

The Patriots should have kept Garoppolo.

I’m pretty sure TB12 could have handed off 42 times, and completed six of eight passes. Jus’ sayin…

  19. The fact that the 49ers only threw 8 passes says volumes about the Packers run defense.

The fact that the Packers were shutout in the first half says even more about the Packers offense.

If it weren’t for 30 minutes of garbage time, the Packers would have lost by more than 50 points.

  20. Packers has so much going for them and were very lucky. Playing nfc East and afc west gave them 6 easy wins. Mahomes And mathew stafford did not play two games. That is 8 give me games. Then Dalvin Cook did not play one game and when they played Seahawks, they had no running backs. On top of that they were healthy while year. It will be tough to get this lucky again

  21. Well Packers fans the better team won. Plain and simple. We still have high hopes for 2020 with a good draft class taking a leap, another year in the same offense, some playmaker on offense coming via the draft and great leadership and a great locker room. O worries from this fan!!

  22. The worst 13-3 team in the history of the NFL was finally exposed. No surprise with the result of the NFC Championship at all! At least we can avoid listening to the media drool over the packers for the next 2 weeks.

    ___
Another off-season begins. Time for Aaron Jones to become the best back in the north again.

  24. What a great, enjoyable , and unexpected season this has been for me as a fan of the Green Bay Packers. There is no shame losing to a team as good as the San Francisco 49’ers. I am disappointed, but not the least discouraged. See you next year.

  25. The lesson to be learned here is that Aaron Rodgers is the symbolic equivalent of purchasing a brand new Lamborghini. It’s fun to drive, it’s intriguing to look at, but it’s expensive to insure and the vehicle is also high maintenance. Rodgers is not worth his contract. It’s all style, no substance.

Z smith quit. He was jogging after RBs by the 2nd qtr.
    ———
One dimensional stat chaser who is all about himself and his celebrations. Doesn’t want to do the dirty work like stop the run, Kittle blocked him out of most plays. That’s the difference Kittle sacrificed stats for team success. I’m sure Z Smith had some dumb celebration planned and is upset he didn’t get to show off his stupid undershirt.

  27. As a saints fan since 1980, i loathe the niners… basically just jealousy I admit since they beat the crap out of my team twice annually until realignment. But man, to do what they’re doing is pretty damn impressive and i begrudgingly admit fun to watch.

  28. As a Packer fan I don’t feel bad at all for losing. We lost to a way, way much better team. I knew we had almost no chance of winning but one can only hope. Packers never really won most of their games in convincing fashion during the regular season anyway. The offense never seemed to play all 4 quarters. Rodgers is definitely showing his age and skills are on the decline. Maybe he’s looking for Adams too often instead of the open guy?

  29. Are we really gonna pretend this was a total blowout? To the Packers’ credit they got within 14 midway through the 4th and kept it somewhat competitive.

I have no excuses, the Packers got beat plain and simple. Their defense got trampled by the 49ers’ run game, there was nothing Rodgers could’ve done.

Congrats to the 49ers for their SB appearance. If you told me at the beginning of the year the Packers would be 13-3 and go to the NFCCG I’d take it in a heartbeat. Fans of the 49ers and anyone else who has beaten the Packers this year, talk all the trash you want. Viking fans, this does not include you because we had a better record than you, went further in the playoffs than you, and beat you twice- oh wait that’s probably the refs’ fault, amirite?

  30. I remember a preseason game where Tim Tebow and Matt Barkley were fighting for the backup QB job, and Raheem Mostert was the best player on the field. I never understood why he kept getting cut, glad he finally got his moment in the sun.

  31. Like I said last week. 49ers won every matchup on the field. Packers were out matched and out classed. Get ready to face a real defense Mahomes. This 49ers team is more than ready to rush you into oblivion.

  32. As a Ravens fan it feels like the two best teams are in the Super Bowl and I don’t think we would have beat either one in the Playoffs – Lamar needs time to become a more complete QB – even though we were 14-2 on the season (and played most of the Playoff teams) it felt like our offense was losing steam at the end – KC fell short last year but this may be their year – that said, the 49ers are a very complete team

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

aaron could have taken care of the ball

  34. Congrats to the 49er Fans out there. What most fail to grasp is that this season for the Packers was supposed to be a season of rebuilding and learning a new system under a new coach. Most of us were looking towards an 8-8 season after the past 2 seasons. We were very surprised to see the team in the playoffs, let alone the NFC Championship. The 9ers had a better team…I would argue the best in the NFL and that damn defense is a machine that will most like grind up the Chiefs. Again, Congratulations to the 49ers, you deserved the win.

  35. well, rodgers said he liked flying under the radar the last 5 weeks…they were so far underground yesterday, no radar could pick them up. stick to state farm ads mr. smug. against really good defenses, you are average at best.

  36. Interestingly… Dee Ford leaves KC to face them in the SB the following year… Gary Plummer leaves the Chargers and plays against them in the SB… Hoping for the same result.

  37. Well done, Niners ,and congrats to your fans. Truly the best team in the NFL this year. Don’t take Andy Reid and the Chiefs for granted – go out and TCB in two weeks

  38. This has the makings of a very entertaining SB, but for those mocking Garoppolo and questioning whether he can lead the Niners by throwing the ball if he has to, go back and look at the game against the Saints on the road or his performance in Seattle to end the season. He can win games throwing the football; he just hasn’t had to because they’ve dominated with the running game. My guess is the Chiefs are going to sell out to stop the run, and Garoppolo will have big passing numbers. Should be a high scoring entertaining game.

  39. Frisco players are confident that they can beat any team anywhere after coming close to beating Baltimore on a rainy day on the road, and after beating the Saints on Bourbon Street.

  40. 49ers fans are preparing for the Super Bowl, as they should. It was well earned. Certain others are yip-yapping, preparing for their annual Super World Class Homeboy Bowl… whatever that is.

  41. As the 9’rs prepare for the SB, at least Packer fans can take solace in knowing they were, 1-1 in the playoffs, same as the Vikings, even though the Vikes actually performed better having to win on the road until the 9r’s shut them down. Just like they did to the Packers.
