With the Dolphins allowing defensive coordinator Patrick Graham to leave for the same position with the Giants, Miami needed a new defensive coordinator. They now have one.

The Dolphins have promoted defensive pass game coordinator/cornerbacks coach to the position of defensive coordinator.

“Josh and I have coached together for 14 years,” coach Brian Flores said in a team-issued release. “He is smart, innovative, a great teacher and a strong communicator.”

The Dolphins also made official other staff changes: Chan Gailey will be offensive coordinator, Robby Brown becomes the quarterbacks coach, Austin Clark serves as outside linebackers coach, Curt Kuntz will work as assistant defensive backs coach, and Steve Marshall has been named offensive line coach.

After an 0-7 start, the Dolphins finished the year with five wins in nine games.

  1. With Brady showing signs that he is indeed mortal.. with the right QB.. & a few hits on a draft class… tell me what free agent wouldn’t want to play for a miami team thats contending for the AFC East.

  2. The current organization from hc and up is toxic. Dolphins will be picking in the top 5 in next years draft also along with other expatriot coaches who are now head coaches. Belichick won by cheating, not coaching up assistants to make them successful.

The dolphins have zero direction. At the beginning of the season they were tanking. Half way through the season they were trying to win. Zero direction and communication between hc and gm. They will continue to lose. The last time the dolphins posted a record worst than this season was 2007.

  4. Chan Gailey as OC? Are you kidding me? At least Miami grabbed him before McCarthy had a chance to bring another has been back to Dallas!

That’s an peculiar word for you to use to describe the direction of the Dolphins. Typically zero means due North. Also typically, North is referred to as up. So, I better explain this slowly, you just stated that the direction the Dolphins are headed is too the top. Well done, Einstein.

  6. There have been a lot of good DC who lost jobs this year thru no fault of their own, and Flores decides to pick a friend who hasn’t been a DC before. I guess it depends if the HC looking to win now, or building for sometime in the future. How many years have the Dolphins been looking toward the future now?

  7. The Dolphins won more games than expected and dumped a ton of salary in process, they were never expected to win much if any games this year
they competed, but playing better than expected with no expectations is not the same as living up to expectations.

They have a ton of draft picks, but dumped a ton of their roster. The key is getting the picks they got correct–I recall a former jets GM had 12 picks and only one is still in the NFL a few years later…that is NOT how you want to draft.

The other concern–once the team is closer to contention–do they keep their head coach? Its much easier to come in AFTER a total rebuild–so whether Flores hangs around is hard to say.

I’m not sure what Chan Gailey brings to the table–or how long he intends to coach–but…its better to know people in the NFL than to be good, if you want to get another job.

  9. I am not worried about the defense. I worry about changing the offense, again. And then changing it again in a year or two when Chan Gailey is Retired/Fired/Leave due to Age/Health…. Why put a new QB through all this?? This team has changed the offense like 10 times in the last 10 years…Ridiculous!!
