Patrick Mahomes is Chiefs’ leading rusher in both playoff games

When the 49ers’ defense is preparing to stop the Chiefs’ passing game, they’ll be thinking primarily of Patrick Mahomes. And when the 49ers’ defense is preparing to stop the Chiefs’ running game, they’ll be thinking primarily of Mahomes as well.

Mahomes has been the Chiefs’ leading rusher in both of their playoff games, and has totaled 106 yards so far in the postseason. Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes for being smart enough to see when the defense is opening up running lanes.

“He’s not the fastest guy out there but you see him know when to run, when to get down, know when to throw it. For a young guy, he’s a special kid,” Reid said.

Knowing when to get down may be the most important element of that in the Super Bowl, as the 49ers will hope that hitting Mahomes hard when he runs will make him think twice about running. If Mahomes can both pass and run effectively, Super Bowl Sunday may be a long day for the 49ers.

  1. This has to change. If the 49ers stop Mahomes, they stop our offense. I guess Reid is not going to use McCoy anymore, must be his tendency to fumble. Whatever the situation, we need to get at least 75 yards from Williams, Thompson and whoever else runs the ball. And then we need to get another RB this off season.

  2. Niners will stuff the run first and then go after Mahomes with the gold rush. They will also be using a linebacker to spy on him to stop him from scrambling. They have had good practice playing against Russell Wilson twice, Kyler Murray twice and Lamar Jackson in the regular season. They also played against Mahomes in the preseason. In fact, Frisco beat Kansas City in the preseason and Mahomes only completed one long pass to a running back in that game.

  3. And this is why the Chiefs will lose the Super Bowl.

RUN FOOTBALL IS BACK IN THE NFL and its back with a vengeance. I’ve only been predicting it for the last 2 season. Don’t believe me? Here ya go:

    72…88…and 77

    What do those numbers mean?

Those are the passing yards Ryan Tannehill and Jimmy Gabagool had in playoff WINS this post season. A kid named Rohan Mustart who was running a Lemonade stand 3 weeks ago ran for 220 YARDS to carry his team to the Super Bowl.

RUNNING and good defense will always be a winning formula….especially in January&February when you have no greater friend than the CLOCK. 49er will win by RUNNING and EATING that clock, simultaneously keeping Mahomes OFF the field.

  4. Steve Young lead the 49ers in rushing a lot of seasons. It’s good for MVP season talk, but not winning superbowls. If Chiefs think they can throw it against the #1 pass defense and use Mahomes as the primary rushing option as well, then go ahead and give SF the trophy now.

  5. Above comment good practice against Wilson and Jackson…hmm yeah 49ers LOST to both those guys…lol number 15 is in another class way above those two QBs….oh yeah you a linebacker spy on pat….who is going cover 87???….lol

  6. RUN FOOTBALL IS BACK IN THE NFL and its back with a vengeance.

The Titans and D. Henry tried that. But thanks for playing.

  7. It’s a simple solution we’ve seen time and time again how to stop QBs like this. We’ve also seen D-coords overthink this time and time again. Set the edge, hold him in the pocket and don’t let him scramble outside. Rush 4, drop the rest in to zone coverage and make Mahomes beat you standing still in the pocket. He won’t be able to and it’s evident by how he played Tennessee, he couldn’t make plays until he scrambled outside.

  8. Kelce, Tyreek, and Watkins each require double coverage. Three offensive players eat up six defensive players. That leaves five defensive players to do everything else. It takes a very deep bench and a lot of oxygen to solve that equation. Dropped passes, turnovers, and untimely penalties by the Chiefs will be the only prayer the 49ers have. They’ll start praying now if they’re smart.

  9. He has the potential to kill us with his scrambling ability. I’ve seen him over and over scramble around in the backfield buying several seconds and then hit someone wide open 40 to 50 yards down the field. Niners have got to limit that. Can’t be giving up lots of big plays in that manner and expect to win.

  10. “It’s a simple solution we’ve seen time and time again how to stop QBs like this.”
    ————————————————

There are no other QBs like this. If solving him were simple, you’d think every team in the league would be doing it. They’re not.

  11. The problem is, you can stop Mahomes for awhile, but the next thing you know he drops a couple of 60 yd bombs on you and you are down by two scores. And it happens just that fast.

  12. Most of those yards we’re gained when the defense was busy covering receivers and being handled at the line. It’s not like Mahomes was looking to run first. If the defense gives the running room, he’ll take it. For SF fans to say their defense will cover all the offensive weapons and keep Mahomes from running, you are about to see another thing coming. I think you’re used to seeing one-dimensional teams in the NFC which doesn’t translate to how you’ll need to play the Chiefs to have any chance at winning. Difference between Lamar Jackson and Mahomes? Well, Mahomes has the best throwing arm of any QB in the league and has football unrivaled football instincts.
When Lamar gets down, he pouts and falls apart. When Mahomes was down 24-0, he rallied his team and put up 41 unanswered points.

  13. He won’t be able to run like that against the 49er D. That are too fast. Still say KC has no chance of winning this game. 31-17 San Fran

  14. Analytics shows that teams who are more efficient in passing win more games than running. All you guys can say this needs to stop. WHY? It is working and working very well. It isn’t a small secret. D. Williams is an outstanding pass catching RB and has great speed in open field. This create match up problems with multiple threats in passing formations. Spread the Defense out thin, and pick apart what is available.

  15. The Niner’s were much better than the Seahawks, but both games went down to the wire.
Chasing Russell Wilson around wore them down. Kansas City won’t be able to run the ball, so can Mahomes do what Wilson did?
He has much, much better recievers to throw to. I think he will need to play a lot of sandlot ball.

  16. Bigger question to ask is how the hell is KC going to stop the 49ers from running the ball? 49ers were the 2nd best rushing team all season and have a TE with over 1000 yards. I get it that Mahomes is great but he will NOT beat the 49ers by himself. The 49ers have a vastly better defense too (#1 overall for points allowed and total yards). KC will not be able to put up 46 points like New Orleans did and KC will not stop the rushing attack so this looks to be the biggest mismatch.

  17. Good luck 49ers the only thing that has stopped this guy the last two years is a knee injury. Can’t double cover everyone and spy him to. Chiefs win 32-10.

  18. The 49ers defense held Lamar Jackson in check and limited Russ in both games, beating him in the second one and coming within a missed FG in the first. I won’t be surprised if Mahomes Rushes for 40 or 50 yards in this one, that’s something Salah and the Niners can live with if it means no 60 yard bombs over the top. It will be a great game, hopefully Chief’s wont be ready for how fast and physical Niners are and get barnstormed like Packers and Vikings did, but that’s wishful thinking on my part.

  19. If KC has a weakness it is in their RBs.

Ummmm… Steve Young NEVER lead the 49ers in rushing for a season, but he did win a SB, so I’m not sure what you are going for here

  20. 9’ers fans commenting are in for a rude awakening. If you think suddenly your team has the magic sauce for stopping the Chiefs’ offense you’re delusional. Chiefs are death by a thousand cuts. We have capable backs, we just don’t dial up the run that much. We did more against the Titans to play the clock which thrilled me that Reid seemed to acknowledge the existence of a clock….

    Ask Derek Henry. He knows.

All Mahomes has to do is move the chains when you double their pass catchers. Go Chiefs!

Exactly this what football is coming to … cheese yards by the QB , I’ve said it before and if you spread the defense out the QB that’s athletic can literally run for yards on every pass play if They wanted to but that would be to obvious and cheesy … oh look 10 yards and I slide not to get hit. Wilson for the Seahawks literally switched to this cheese play second half of the Greenbay playoff game to mount a comeback because real football wasn’t working … talent depleted college teams use this offense to try and even the playing field . Think I’m wrong watch a few games Looking to see if the qb could run on every pass play

  23. It’s a smart strategy. It adds yet another weapon to the offense. It slows the pass rush down because you have to account for his running. Look at the Seahawks. If Wilson didn’t run all the time that offense would go nowhere. Mahomes running poses lots of problems for a defense that would already struggle to contain him. With as aggressive as SF’s DL is I wouldn’t be surprised to see some designed runs or have some hot reads that when they are playing man Mahomes is going to run.

I think this is going to be a very interesting game.

  24. I have no horse in this race. Both teams are excellent and deserving to be there. 49ers are a great team no doubt but I don’t see how they or any team can stop the Chiefs offense the way they have played recently. So many talented weapons they can use. Where the 49ers are basically a one trick running team (albeit very effective). If they go down by 14, how can they stay with that approach? Hoping for a good, exciting game though.
    Oh and Go Birds.

  25. Makes sense, they were down in both games by double digits. 9er fans think this going to be a cake walk, but KC is the most explosive team they will play this year.

  26. If he is the leading rusher in the superbowl, then expect the 49ers to have won the game handily. The 49ers have the front to make like uncomfortable for KC, but unlike the titans, Mahomes will not be able to run on SF. He will open himself up to many hits and he doesn’t want to do that. SF will force him to stay in the pocket and he will be rushed most of the time. It’s gonna be a really good game if you like defense and running the football. KC defense just might get exposed in this game. They are not really as good as their recent stats say they are.

He was the leading rusher due to opportunity, not necessity.
Mahomes hasn’t lost a game handily in his career, so good luck with those expectations.

    —————-

Wilson has to run. He’s too short to stand in the pocket and pass.

  29. He will be out of the game by the second quarter, and the Chiefs will use their back up leaving them no chance of winning. This could be the biggest blowout in Super Bowl history. The Titans would of had a better shot of winning. This will be an ugly game for the Chiefs.

  30. This is what happens when you cant even touch a QB without getting a flag, he runs to the sideline every defender puts their hands in the air so they dont get some bogus flag then he cuts up field.

  31. This proves what I have been saying for awhile. The Chiefs have a very poor run game. Most of Mahomes long runs aren’t designed runs. They are busted pass plays where he decides to run.
