Richard Sherman on Jimmy Garoppolo critics: “Idiots sound like idiots at this point”

Most players get criticized for things they do. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been criticized lately over something he didn’t do. As in he hasn’t thrown the ball very much during the past six quarters of football.

The circumstances that led to the run-heavy offense — several near misses against the Vikings in the divisional round — have fed the perception that 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan became freaked out by the potential for turnovers and opted to run the ball until the running game is stopped. Against the Vikings in the third and fourth quarter and against the Packers in the entire game, the running couldn’t be stopped.

Which is good for the 49ers, but not great for Garoppolo. Especially if, in the Super Bowl, there’s yet another Bob Griese game plan.

In an interview with Tyler Dunne of BleacherReport.com, 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman was asked about the criticism of Garoppolo, not for doing something wrong but for doing nothing.

Idiots sound like idiots at this point,” Sherman said.

So is it good if the quarterback doesn’t have to throw the ball?

“Once again, it’s people telling you how to win,” Sherman said. “Like, ‘Hey, we don’t care that you’re winning by double digits every game. You’re not winning the way we want you to. So let’s criticize him.'”

That’s fine. But if the running game isn’t there, Garoppolo will need to win with his arm. Is Sherman confident that Garoppolo can do it?

“We’re the No. 1 seed going into the Super Bowl,” Sherman said. “We’re as confident as we’re going to be.”

The not-so-subtle dodge isn’t surprising. At this point, it’s not known how Garoppolo will handle the kind of pressure that comes from a season riding on a drive or a decision or a throw because he hasn’t had to face that kind of heat. And he may not have to next Sunday.

If he does, it will make for a more interesting Super Bowl. Whatever the outcome.

  1. Garoppolo THREW more TDs this season than Rodgers, Mahomes, Cousins, Ryan, and Watson. Facts don’t lie.

He can throw it when needed.

  2. I wouldn’t call what the Chiefs’ D throws at QBs “heat.” This isn’t really the game to worry about whether or not Jimmy G can get it done. It doesn’t require a high level of efficiency to beat this D through the air.

  3. Don’t quite understand why Jimmy G has doubters like he does? He’s one of the better QB’s in the league. Look at his numbers and his team’s success. It hasn’t been all the running game and defense. Garoppolo has done his job very well, too. He hasn’t had to put up big numbers in the postseason, but he’s done what he’s needed to do, when he’s needed to do it.

  4. EIGHT of garoppolo’s 27 tds were against Arizona’s 32rd ranked defense.

THREE of garoppolo’s 27 tds were against Cincinnati’s 29th ranked defense.

    The “great” jimmy garbagolo.

  5. Jimmy G. has a life time completion percentage of 67%. His completion percentage in New England was 67% and his completion percentage in Frisco is 67%. Jimmy G. is remarkably consistent and he is consistently good. Jimmy G. has a life time quarterback rating of 100 and he is only the third quarterback in 49er history to finish a season with a quarterback rating of 100 or above, in 2019, (the other two being hall of famers Joe Montana and Steve Young). Bob Griese does not come close to any of these numbers, with a 56% completion rate and 77.1 passer rating life time. Jimmy G. has a 250 yards/game average as a starter for Frisco (he has 40 yards/game as a backup in New England). Bob Griese has 155 yards passing per game in his career. Their numbers are not even close, and numbers do not lie.

Arguing that Jimmy G. is like Bob Griese is indeed only something that an idiot would do.

  6. FIVE more of garoppolo’s 27 tds were against
    Cleveland, Atlanta, and Carolina.

That leave 11 tds in the 10 games against all other teams.

    The “great” jimmy garbagolo.

  7. Jimmy G has the highest rating of any QB in the 4th quarter this season. Not sure why how well he handles pressure is questioned constantly. It’s like people have never watched a single Niners game.

  8. True. Who cares what anyone says.
Got to play the game and win. No one is going to be talking about how much or little JimmyG threw.

  9. If after watching the Saints game you are still doubting Jimmy G as a thrower, then I have to agree with Sherman.

  10. The 49ers are making a mistake taking like they have already won the SB.

Having 5 1st rounders on DL might have something to do with winning.

  11. It’s not hard to dismiss Sherman’s unremitting arrogance from behind a microphone. As Collinsworth always says: “Now here’s a guy …. ”

Garapola doesn’t need that guy defending him. His won/lost record does that well enough without Sherman’s “We’re just so disrespected” schtick.

  12. I don’t particularly have any comments about Jimmy G, but I distinctly remember MF CONSTANTLY criticizing Sherman’s self-negotiated 3yr/$39m deal with SF just two years ago. Yeah, looks like he bet on himself and WON and complete silence from those “expert” critics.

  13. @doctorrustbelt… Now that you’ve had your fun dogging Garoppolo, why don’t you tell us who your horse is, how many TDs he threw, and whom they came against. BTW, did Jimmy toss any TDs against N.O.? If so, how many and what was their defensive ranking?

  14. Quarterbacks have only reached 4,000+ passing yards 3 times in 49ers history. Steve Young did it twice and Jeff Garcia did it once. Montana never did. In their run-first offense, and in his first full season as the starting quarterback Garoppolo came in 4th all-time in 49ers single-season passing yardage with 3,978 yards. So why exactly people are saying that he can’t throw is a mystery the world may never know.

  15. All the credit goes to Shanahan and no credit goes to Jimmy. And yet the simple truth of the matter is that Shanahan is 21-5 with Jimmy, and 4-20 without him. As far as this game is concerned, it’s no secret that Kansas City wants to throw, and San Francisco wants to run. So it’ll be KC’s #5 passing offense vs SF’s #1 pass defense, and SF’s #2 rush offense vs KC’s #26 rush defense.

I’ve seen this movie before… back in 2007 when Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, and the high-flying, undefeated 18-0 New England Patriots strolled into town for Super Bowl XLII. They set the single-season record with 589 points, had the #1 total offense, #1 passing offense, and Brady averaged 300+ yds/game and threw 50 TDs. The only thing the Giants had going for them was the #4 rushing offense and they were playing good defense. But these aren’t the 2018 Chiefs that scored 565 points. This year’s team scored 451… and San Francisco scored more than that. The Niners are solid all the way around, but the Chiefs are a one-trick pony… heave the ball downfield and hope that Hill or Watkins can go get it.

The 49ers are making a mistake taking like they have already won the SB.

Having 5 1st rounders on DL might have something to do with winning.

If that was the case then the browns would have won multiple superbowl by now considering all the high first round picks they have had in the last 15 years

  17. Jimmy G has a weakness seeing LB’s in coverage. He bounced two off of Kendricks in addition to the one that MK picked off. Shanahan went to the run almost exclusively after that and so far it has worked but it seems pretty clear his own coach doesn’t trust him to throw it much. The way they’ve run the ball it hasn’t mattered but if K.C. can slow down the run game or if SF is behind and has to throw that’s a problem.

  18. Brady has, played in the weakest division of all time throughout his career. How many tds has the “great tom brady ” thrown against the great dolphins, the great bills and the great jets? How many pro bowl qbs has brady gone against in his division since he became a Patriot? Brady averaged 24 tds and 13 ints his first 6 seasons as a starter qb. JimmyG is a better qb his first season as starting qb, than brady was as a game manager being carried by belichick and his great defense and run game. Brady was trent Dilfer2.0 for 6 years until He got moss. Then he got injured for the year, came back and was trent Dilfer again for another 2 years after he got healthy. Brady was trent Dilfer for his first 10 years, except for 1 year with moss and 1 year on injury. Look up the stats. They don’t lie. JimmyG is already a better qb after his first complete season as starting qb than brady was after 6 years as a starter. The jimmyG haters and brady worshippers don’t want to hear the truth. The truth hurts.

  19. SF QBs have reached 4000 yards 3 times in 49 history…

Young and Montana might as well have played in 1920’s compared to today’s NFL…
It is geared toward passing, or haven’t you noticed that major shift in the league in the last, say, 25 years.

Jimmy is good, not great. He’s got a long way to go before his story is written and less than 2 full seasons is NO WAY to judge QB. Fact is he is not a major reason they got here this year. He’s playing the TB role in the early 2000s, nothing more.

KC is anything but a 1-trick pony. They have all-world QB, who make circus throws and runs a solid running, a beast TE, an excellent, fast receiving core, a solid O-Line and a D that has played it’s best ball in the last third of the season. If KC’s slows down SF run game ( big IF) then I like them to win solidly.

  20. If you have watched Jimmy since he came to SF three years ago you believe in him. If you have only watched the last two games, you don’t.

  21. infectorman – It’s a fact that Jimmy is not a major reason they got here this year? Well here’s another fact… Kyle Shanahan is 21-5 with Jimmy, and 4-20 without him.

  22. infectorman – Looking at their 16-game regular season, you’ll forgive me if I don’t give much weight to Broncos (x2), Chargers (x2), Raiders (x2), Colts, Lions, Bears, or Jags. That leaves the Ravens, Packers, Vikings, Patriots, Texans and Titans… of which they’re 3-3 with a -2 point differential. Those are some eye-popping, jaw-dropping numbers that are sure to frighten the San Francisco 49ers. I hope you sense the sarcasm because I’m layin’ it on pretty thick.

  23. Garoppolo was ranked 14th in fantasy this season, that’s backup/waiver wire material

You can just stream the favorable matchups and do just as well

  24. The posters dissing Garoppolo either haven’t seen many Niner games this year, are jealous, or are clueless about football.

Here’s a hint: The goal is to WIN.

Remember Dan Marino? The man threw the ball accurately and prodigiously, yet Miami only went to the SB once, and lost. It’s a team game, not a QB show.

During the regular season, Garoppolo had a higher completion percentage and more touchdowns than Mahomes. A big reason for that is that Shanahan is smart. He plays to the other team’s weaknesses, using Jimmy when the opponent has trouble stopping the pass, and running over teams that can’t stop the run.

Stats don’t win Super bowls. If the Niners can win without throwing one pass…fine. If they can win with no runs, that’s fine, too.

  25. Garoppolo has completed 66% of his passes that traveled at least 20 yards downfield this season. That is by far the highest of any quarterback this season, and the highest in a single season since 2006 when this stat was first started.

Fantasy has absolutely noting to do with NFL teams winning.

Fantasy performance is based on individual performance. To win in the NFL, you need great TEAM performance.

A lot of great fantasy QBs will be sitting home watching the Super Bowl.

  28. Joe Montana threw more interceptions than Jimmy G does. The reason Montana is considered one of the best of all time isn’t completion percentage or TDs or any other stats.

Joe is considered one of the best because HE WON. He won 4 Super Bowls….out of 4.

One of the reasons that the Niners have a great running game is that opponents know they need to respect Garoppolo. Sure, they could keep 8 or 9 in the box, but then Garoppolo would destroy them.

  29. danielsong39 – “Garoppolo was ranked 14th in fantasy this season, that’s backup/waiver wire material”

You just made my point… all of this nonsense about Mahomes! Mahomes! Mahomes! How many times Jimmy passes vs. hands the ball off, etc., etc., has only become important over the past few years with people who look at PFF, NextGen, Fantasy Points, etc. As far as how good a quarterback actually is, or the team is, those things are completely irrelevant.

Agree 110%, to many fans and players today are too quick to blame the QB for a loss and give them all the credit for wins, there’s never been a player that’s EVER won a game without a lot of help but too many people don’t see it that way!

  31. @redandgoldhitman52

Look at this guy who’s probably only watched football for the last 10 years try to compare Tom and Jimmy based on entirely different passing eras. Those stats you’re quoting are only “mediocre” today. They were good enough to lead the league in yardage and touchdowns some of those seasons 15-20 years ago. Learn some football before mounting a laughable comparison.

NAH, the 49ers won those SB’s! Like the fact that had it not been for Clark’s miracle “catch” the 49ers wouldn’t even have been in that SB!

It takes a lot of players to win games, especially SB’s and to try and give all the credit to one player is just asinine and shows how little most fans really know about the sport!

  33. Jimmy G has done nothing but win with the 49ers. Whenever his number has been called, he has come through. He’s beat good teams on the road with his arm, and comes through in the clutch. He hasn’t game managed his way to the Superbowl he’s just played exceptional FOOTBALL. Anyone who can’t see that is blind to talent. Haters gonna Hate and Jimmy Garappolo just wins football games.

  34. Guys who blast Baker Mayfield for not shaking their hand, despite video evidence clearly showing the opposite, sound like even bigger idiots.

  35. Baker Mayfield?? Lol! Where did he come from?? Doesn’t he play in the CFL?? He might as well. He doesn’t belong on the same field as Richard Sherman.

  36. “It’s a fact that Jimmy is not a major reason they got here this year? Well here’s another fact… Kyle Shanahan is 21-5 with Jimmy, and 4-20 without him…”

The NFL is littered with examples of good coaches winning with OK- serviceable QBs.

John Harbaugh won with Joe Flacco
Brian Billick won with Trent Dilfer
Gary Kubiak won with the ghost of Peyton Manning.
Lovie SMith GOT TO a SB with Rex Grossman….let that sink in.Rex Grossman.

Niners D and running game have been their team this year. Jimmy is along for the ride

  37. Stats are stats and mean nothing. Absolutely nothing. The Griese reference is simple – he won without having to throw the ball (that is called a fact). JG’s TEAM has won with a game plan that did not require him to throw the ball. That is also called a fact.

I can sell any case I want to with a stat. I know great players when I watch games.

    =======================

I am not taking away anything from Garoppolo, but I will say your “facts” are misleading. Garoppolo only threw 1 td more than the QB’s you listed and only Rogers played all 16 games like Garoppolo did. Mahomes played 2 less games and only had 1 less TD.

Plus, I will bet there are 32 GMs that would take Mahomes and Watson over Jimmy G.

Again, Jimmy G is definitely a franchise QB, just not elite.

  39. Weird how 49ers have a top defense and Vegas has them as underdogs…might have something to do with Jimmy G…

  40. It’s funny, the same people that criticize Jimmy G, made excuses for Brady all year. You can’t have it both ways.
If you are running all over your opponent, why pass? Not Jimmy’s fault. I’m so sick of people criticizing individual players in team sports. Did you win? Ok, good.

  41. I hope and pray the Chiefs lay a beat-down on the Niners just so i can hear Sherman come up with excuses on why it happened……..everyone is very tired of listening to this clown continuing to flap his lips every week.

  42. Jimmy G has only started 26 games and until this year he has basically played “back up” in that he has started 5 or less of the games any season before this.

He gets a little frantic after he’s been pressured a few times on a drive but always seems to shake it off the next drive and get back to making good quick reads. He has a great release. One of the quickest realeases in football. To make a release comparison it’s like Steph Curry from behind the arc.

That said… I think he is the weak link in the 49er offense but only because of inexperience at game speed. He has a very high ceiling and is just getting started. There aren’t many QB’s in the league that can convert – 3rd and 16 TWICE in a final drive to set up a game winning FG.

Every game Jimmy is improving, I can’t wait to see how he plays in the SB. I think he shuts down the doubters, the defense disrupts Mahomes just enough and the Team plays complete complimentary football to bring home the 6th Lombardi.
