Andy Reid: Chiefs had “a pretty good idea” how high they had to trade to draft Mahomes

At the time that the Chiefs traded two first-round picks and a third-round pick to move up to No. 10 overall to select Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL draft, it looked like they were taking a big risk. Now that we know how great a player Mahomes is, the real risk was waiting until No. 10, rather than giving up even more and trading up even higher to get Mahomes.

But Chiefs coach Andy Reid said today that the Chiefs felt quite confident that as long as they got somewhere in the Top 10, they could get Mahomes. Reid said the Chiefs were studying every report about every other team’s plans, and 10th overall was a spot where they thought Mahomes would be there.

“Because of the media attention that gets put on the draft around that time, people talk,” Reid said. “We had a pretty good idea who was interested and who wasn’t. [John] Dorsey was in charge of the draft at that time and he maneuvered up to get him, knowing who was out there and who the threats were.”

The reality is, no team ever knows for sure what every other team thinks, and it only takes one team hiding its intentions for a player to be picked higher than anyone expects. But the Chiefs pulled off a shrewd move, and they deserve credit for landing Mahomes, making a move that a whole lot of teams now wish they had made.

  1. Meanwhile the Bears thought they were smarter than anyone else in the room, and traded away the farm for Trubisky, ha ha ha ha, how did that one work out?

  2. Excellent scouting on the Chiefs on the Chiefs part in getting the guy to fit their offense. I saw a few Mahomes games and highlights, but never saw the level of execution in the NFL. This guy was all over the place in college. Plenty good with bad. Andy Reid is a true QB whisperer.

  3. The Trubisky thing baffled me, even without the benefit of hindsight now. Guy had one good but not amazing year, in the ACC, and the Bears acted like he was the second coming of Peyton Manning.

  4. The Chief’s biggest problem over the years was not having a true franchise QB, no disrespect to Green and Smith were were fantastic for us, and why I always wanted Reid to be our coach when he was done in Philly. Thank God Clark woke opened up that check book and outbid Arizona to get Reid.

  5. As a Packers fan I say “thank you” to the Bears for trading UP for Trubisky, and giving up picks that could have netted them both Patrick Mahomes, and Alvin Kamara in the 3rd round !!!!!

Had they done that they’d be LOADED for the next 8-10 years !

  6. Mahomes is probably lucky too. Even with his talent, if you get drafted to a team that doesn’t have talent around the QB or who doesn’t have as good an offensive coordinator, you may not have the opportunity to shine as brightly.

  7. the Chiefs knew the Saints would take mahommes @#11, so they traded with Buffalo @ #10 to jump them.
THe Bill probably would have drafted Marshon Lattimore, who was slotted to go to the Titans @ #5 (Corey Davis WR from Western Michigan), #6 to the Jets (Jamal Adams) #7 the Chargers (Mike Williams) or the BEngals (John Ross). and the Saints would have picked Mahommes

  8. People forget where that #10 came from. Yes, Mahomes could have been a Buffalo Bill. They did pretty good getting the two #1’s and a #3. Has anyone asked if they would make that trade again?

  9. I CANT STOP laughing about the Trubisky deal. As a Bostonian living in Chicago (wife is from here), she expected the bears to make a move for Watson NOT Trubisky. I remember Schefter was on TMZPN stating that “his sources” stated the bears were making the trade to move up to get Trubisky, because the 49ers were about to take him. Hindsight is 20/20 since my Patriots traded Jimmy G months later. However, that was proven false because San Francisco wanted Thomas all along. Why would an OC like Shannahan pass on Trubisky if he was THAT GOOD?! Becasue he wasnt! 1 year starters in college do well in the bigs.

Everyone rags on the Bears. But the Jags, bengals, Chargers, Jets, Browns, and Niners could’ve had him too.

  11. The Bears hardly traded away the farm for Trubisky. I think it was two 3s and a 4th. And stop calling Lynch a genius for doing it. Lets not forget that he took Solomon Thomas at #3, who rarely even sees the field these days.

  12. Just because other teams did not pick him, does not mean it would have worked out with Mahomes. Andy had a vision and is great with QBs. Not every player fits every system.

  13. “Meanwhile the Bears thought they were smarter than anyone else in the room, and traded away the farm for Trubisky, ha ha ha ha, how did that one work out?”

Could just have easily worked out the reverse of that with Trubisky being great and Mahomes not. I long ago lost count of the “sure fire #1 draft picks” or top 10 picks that proved to be busts.

THANK GOD you guys did! I like Josh Allen, he is a good kid, but jesus the decisions he makes. Many of us Patriot fans like Allen. Its good to have good competition in the AFC East again. Hopefully you guys continue to grow!

  15. The better quarterback does not always win the Super Bowl. Eli Manning won it twice versus Tom Brady. Nick Foles beat Tom Brady. Drew Brees and Russell Wilson beat Peyton Manning. Even though most NFL MVPs have been quarterbacks, no regular season MVP has also won the Super Bowl the same season since Kurt Warner did it in 1999. Last year’s MVP did not win the Super Bowl either. For some strange reason, the 2019 MVP has not been announced yet but it is unlikely that either Mahomes or Jimmy G. is the 2019 NFL MVP, so this year’s MVP is almost certainly not going to win the Super Bowl this year. Heck may be Mahomes IS the 2019 NFL MVP. I certainly hope so. LOL

  16. Still doesn’t make up for the ’83 draft when the Chiefs took Todd Blackledge @ #7 with Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Tony Eason & Ken O’Brien still on the board.

But at least they FINALLY got this one right. It’s been a loooong time coming.

That Todd Blackledge pick made Lamar Hunt so afraid, that he never drafted a QB in the first round again.

Agreed… but it wasn’t Reid’s system that they put Mahomes into… I was Mahomes that they built a system around to maximize his strengths… Andy Reid should some day be in the HOF for being able to adjust to the players instead of getting players to adjust to him. Other coaches could be running this kid into the ground by trying to change him. I think Reid is a genius getting the MOST out of players by putting them into a position to succeed.

  18. People in here crowning Mahomes as the next QB god need to be reminded of Dan Marino. Made SB in 2nd yr, lost the game- never saw it again even tho was an unreal talent. NFL is a team game. Untimely injuries, bad defenses, and bad matchups in the playoffs happen all the time.

  19. It was an Amazing Move by the Chiefs to move up to 10 to draft Mahomes. I Thank Andy Reid, Brett Veach, Clark Hunt and John Dorsey for making the move.

  20. Mahomes is a transcendent talent, but the Bills didn’t make out too badly either. A top 3 CB (TWhite), a Pro Bowl LB(TEdmunds), starting LT(DDawkins) and depth CB(SNeal). JAllen wasn’t part of the trade, but they seem to like him and he has potential to be very good.

  21. I had never even heard of Mahomes when they drafted him so the trade seemed like a serious reach. I’m sure all the draft pundits said the same thing. To say this trade worked out for them is an understatement. Getting him at #10 now looks like a steal. This guy is going to be haunting defenses for the next fifteen years.

I’m not even a Chiefs fan (but I don’t hate them) but this guy is fun to watch. Not only does he make plays but he seems like a fun guy to be around. The way he rallied his team after falling behind to the Texans shows what kind of a leader he is. He’s something special.

  22. “Man I’m glad the Browns got rid of John Dorsey! What a terrible talent evaluator that guy is!” (said no one ever)

  23. Dorsey must have some serious defincencies somewhere because he drafted Mahommes and Mayfield and somehow pulled a trade for Beckham. You’d think a guy like that could keep a job.

  24. People in here crowning Mahomes as the next QB god need to be reminded of Dan Marino. Made SB in 2nd yr, lost the game- never saw it again even tho was an unreal talent. NFL is a team game. Untimely injuries, bad defenses, and bad matchups in the playoffs happen all the time

What’s your point? He was still a hall of famer. That means he was one of the very best amongst his peers. You guys add so much weight to these SBs. When Elway won his 2 SBs, did you instantly think he was 10 times better than before? Same QB to me, just had a better team around him.

  25. Lets not forget that EVERYONE had Mahomes graded at a second rounder. He had major flaws, and was not ready to start. The grade was correct at the time. Sometimes you have to over-reach to get the talent you want. Fortunate for Pat, he had the opportunity to sit an learn for a year and blossomed as a result.

I loved Watson in that draft as a Bears fan but vividly remember Mahomes being comped to Matt Stafford and Jay Cutler as “best case scenario” if he developed. I would’ve been furious at the time had they taken Mahomes with the 3rd pick after years of Cutler.

    Funny how hindsight works.

  27. Bills fan here.

We missed out on a generational talent, IMO. I adore Josh Allen & Tre White but do not see Allen ever at Mahomes level. Yes Reid may have much to do with his success but I am also in belief cream rises to the top, eventually minus injuries.

I see Mahomes up there with the top tier QB’s contending for the SB year after year. So those Bills fans who blew this off as “oh well” & move on…IMHO we missed out on a great one.

KC fans, please enjoy, this guy is special.

  28. Mahomes seems like a great kid to go with his talent. I’m wishing KC the best and a W in the Super Bowl. As a Jet fan, I’d like to see another fan base get that 50 year monkey off it’s back.
Umm hoping the Jets new GM can build a team around Darnold like the Chiefs have around Mahomes and they battle for the next decade or so trying to reach the Super Bowl.
    Good luck Chief fans.

  29. Really what was SF’s loss there to draft him was that of Chiefs gain. He really will be in the H.O.F. keeping it up like that. Plus he has a humble attitude.
