Matt Patricia on same page with Lions’ ownership about rebuilding franchise

The record says 9-22-1 in Lions coach Matt Patricia’s first two seasons, but Patricia says he and his bosses have a shared vision for where the franchise is and where it’s going.

Patricia visited the PFT Live set in Miami and said he and Lions owner Martha Ford are on the same page.

“I meet with Mrs. Ford and her family and the organization all the time. We have open conversation every week,” Patricia said.

Ford announced late last season that Patricia will be back for the 2020 season, ending speculation that nine wins over two seasons could get him fired. But Ford also said Patricia needs to have the Lions in playoff contention in 2020, and Patricia sounded comfortable with that mandate.

“Obviously our record is not good and your record is what it is,” Patricia said. “I do feel that the growth part of what we’re trying to do is there, and I think she recognizes that.”

A year ago, Kyle Shanahan was 10-22 through two years as the 49ers’ head coach, and now Shanahan has the 49ers in the Super Bowl. Patricia is looking to make a similar leap in Year 3.

  1. Whenever I see a team with a losing record the first question I ask is not “Who is the HC”, instead I ask “Who is the GM that drafted this crap?”.
Lets say Patricia is a so-so HC, what does firing him get you?
You have just as good a chance of getting another bum.
And maybe Patricia is still learning and is actually adequate.
Maybe it’s on the GM to draft better.

  3. Obviously they’re on the same page. Patricia is a not a head coach and is running the team further into the ground than they already were. The Ford family has a six decade history of failure and losing. Match made in heaven.

Trubisky is garbage, but he does OWN the Lions!

  4. Maybe he can lighten up just a little and instill a winning mindset. Guys need to be focused but relaxed and the fear culture doesn’t help that. Add some pass rushers and stop with the 3 man fronts and dropping 8 into coverage every other play. Our secondary could be a lot better if QBs didn’t have ALL day to sit back there and throw, no one can cover for 8 seconds idc who you are. Guys were going through their reads TWICE during pass plays. If Quinn and Patricia don’t get pass rushers in free agency and the draft they need to be fired immediately.

  6. The problem with Matty P is that he came in and just went scorched earth with the players when he should of eased his process in to make for a more smooth transition. Him and Quinn seem to be on a mission to establish a Patriots style “culture” the problem is that you cant just take a model that works there and expect to replicate it somewhere else. Also Quinn’s drafts have been average at best he has yet to draft one star outside of maybe KG. That’s not going to cut it. Quinn also seems to be drafting just “character” and culture fit” guys to the detriment of first tier talent. In other words just a bunch of middling players who love the game but don’t stand out. The other thing is he does very un-patriot line moves, like over paying in FA and trading up in the draft as opposed to trading back. He’s sitting in prime position this year to trade back and collect more pick but I would bet my mortgage he will over play his hand and reach for a player. The obvious pick for the lions is Okudah or Simmons but I bet he botches it and takes a WR. This team will always do the complete opposite of the common sense move. I’ve been subjected to this misery my whole waking life as a fan.

  7. Lots of fun stuff going on with a franchise that are experts in losing and false hope for their miserable franchise. The everlasting dumpster fire in Detroit is always burning strong for Corky!

  8. My take is simple. Patricia is another coach in a long line of NFL head coaches, who cant do the job, its too big for them.
Some are good at defense and some are good at offense but when given the whole team to manage its way over their heads and it has nothing to do with intellegence. Its the Peter Principle at work

  9. The Lions need to be on Hard Knocks. 1 (one) playoff win in 62 years and counting. Plus, I would love to see Patricia and the 94 year old owner Martha Ford talking football.

  10. I think his grace period has passed. The ‘it factor’ also applies to head coaches, and Patricia doesn’t have it.

  11. All the geniuses on this site commenting on the Coach or GM or Stafford, too funny. Only one common theme in 60+ years of suckage, the FORDS! Until they sell the team, the suck will continue, blame whomever makes you feel better. Intelligent people know the reality.

  12. Comparing K Shanahan to this guy is ridiculous. He inherited a decent roster, made all the vets run gassers, and lost the team. Now they are talking about rebuilding? Huh? How this guy has a head coaching job still is crazy.

  13. Are you kidding??? Mayhew is responsible for Quinn’s incompetence at GM? A pathetic and thoroughly untenable position. Thanks for the laugh, though!

The Coach or GM or Stafford are part of the problem you genius. The Ownership is responsible for their hiring and drafting and the failure overall. Ya know that common theme you referred to….you should have thought that one out a little more.

  15. Patricia inherited a losing team with a bad culture. In the 2nd yr of the rebuild, his starting QB was 3-4-1. They were competitive every game. Then Stafford misses the rest of the yr and the backups go 0-8. Get some perspective. The surest way to nowhere is changing His every 2/3 yrs. SMH

  16. I don’t see him as a leader of men. He looks like a garden gnome on the sideline and the Lions make mental mistakes that comes from not being 100% sure what their role is on any given play. This is baked in to the teams DNA and until they shake that out this whole process is just a waste. They are not going to be much better next year if this team doesn’t become LASER FOCUSED in their individual responsibilities.

  17. It’s like in basketball. Steve Kerr was a great coach when he had the players. Now that he doesn’t he sucks. Coaching is part of it but this and every other league is about players. Tannehill sucked in Miami, he got some decent players and coaching in Tennessee and he’s a successful reclamation project.

  18. Not head coach or any coach material. Brady simply had to score way more than should have been needed to win and cover up for lack of D.

  19. Hahahahaha! Sorry, Patricia. They’ve been in rebuilding mode since 1957! Players and coaches come and go and nothing ever changes in Detroit!

  20. Holy cow. First time I’ve ever heard Patricia speak. Up until now my perception of him had been that of a cool, calm, collected leader, a-la Belichik. Not anymore. I was a player-coach in another sport for 35 years and I can tell you with a 99% certainty that Patricia is not a leader of men, not a chance in hell. He’s a thin-skinned spaz who’s also a bit of a dork. I now understand why they’ve lost so many games under his “leadership”.

  21. People that have never been in the Lions locker room or at a midseason practice deciding they know about Patricia’s leadership skills. I may get a concussion from SMH so much.

  22. I used to coach and play on a ham and egg softball team. Am I qualified?. C’mon, it was fast pitch.
