So much for the suspense of the NFL Honors Show.

Later Saturday night, the Pro Football Hall of Fame will announce the five newest members who were elected as part of the Class of 2020.

But Steve Atwater’s supporters shared their good news, announcing the safety has earned election.

Agent Peter Schaffer congratulated “the newest member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame” with a photo of Atwater.

John Elway, the Broncos’ General Manager and and president of football operations, confirmed the news as he walked the red carpet into the taping for the Honors show.

“Couldn’t happen to a better guy,” Elway said, via Mike Klis of 9News. “Great representative of the Denver Broncos and a great football player.”

In his 16th year of eligibility and his third time as a finalist, Atwater is headed to Canton.

  1. He should have beem in long ago. He was much better than Polamalu who will get in withing the next 3 to 5 years, not a first ballot guy.

  2. I am a Giant fan living in Denver since 1977 and I will tell you,I have had safety envy, when it comes to Atwater.
    Congrats!!!

  3. This is ridiculous. He was good but was so slow and horrible in Super Bowls.

Welcome to the Hall of Fame, Rodney Harrison in 2021.

Absolutely ridiculous how political this is and how they put inferior players in over others.

Cliff Branch, Roger Craig, Ken Riley all need to be in and I don’t care if Miellnnials don’t know who these people are.

  4. Great hitter, below average in coverage (actually he was terrible in coverage, but have to be nice). If he wasn’t a HOFer 16 years ago, why is he now? It’s not like he got better in those 16 years. Letting someone in just to ‘fill a quota’ really has cheapened this process….

  5. Was he the best or one of the best at his position when he played, yes. Did teams have to scheme for him every Sunday, yes. Does he deserve a bust. Ask Christian Okoye. Yes. Long over due. Congrats

  6. Tylawpicksix did you even watch super bowl 32? Atwater was almost named co MVP in that game. He was not slow by any means. You probably didn’t start watching football until the Pats finally won a superbowl.

Are you sure you aren’t a millennial? You have a lot of the traits my man hahaha cry and whine, cry and whine and pretend to know it all. Haha

  8. 2x SB champ, 8 Pro Bowls (when it mattered), 2x All Pro, was the freaking Starting safety on the 90s all decade team, made the hot of the decade on Okoye…ummm yeah, he’s a HOFCriticizing him because he didn’t get on first ballot is ridiculous. By that logic you’d have to discredit anyone who didn’t get the notion their first year of eligibility.

  9. Congratulations #27! I can recall the Broncos not taking Louis Oliver and the fan base was not happy about that. Worked out perfectly. I watched from the North Stands, Sec 136, Seats 7-9. Amazing to watch Atwater blow guys up! Well deserved.

Agreed that Harrison needs to be in. He is a HOFer and so is Atwater. He was the last TRUE enforcer on Defense. That breed is long gone and so it’s difficult to compare todays safeties from yesteryear. Steve was one of the very best. The SMILING ASSASIN!!!! Congrats 27.

  12. Someone.. ANYONE.. tell me how Zach Thomas IS NOT a Hall of Famer?!?! The man retired with the most tackles in NFL history and was the anchor of one of the best defenses in the NFL from 1998-2004. It makes no damn sense.

  13. For commenters who don’t have a clue about Atwater’s credentials, Google Atwater and watch.

Next year #53….waaaay over due Gradishar!!

  14. John lynch was a 9 time pro bowler and 2 time all pro with a super bowl ring who was one of the players who anchored that tampa 2 defense which was great. He was great period but he get snubbed again. Lych accolades are more then brian dawkins plus dawkins did not get a super bowl ring, Im tired of this man not getting in. Its a joke

  15. I still get goosebumps watching Atwater’s Super Bowl 32 highlights. And I’ve still never seen another player knock out 3 guys, including himself, in one hit. Wow!

  16. Atwater was ONE OF THE BEST during his career, People seem to forget the game has changed and so has his position that requires more coverage ability these days. So some people knock his coverage ability when his position and era played to more stopping the run than the newer era of stopping the pass with all the rule changes over the years since Atwaters playing days. The guy does not go to 8-9 Pro Bowls based on getting toasted. Also, his post season and Super Bowl winning performances Atwater was a factor unlike lots of other players that are in the HOF. Very well deserved.
