Frank Clark rips Jimmy Garoppolo after 49ers Super Bowl win

Frank Clark has been talking the whole playoffs, so there was no expectation he’d be demure and gracious now.

In fact, after the Chiefs beat the 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV, he took some a more personal shot at 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

“You paying the guy $140 million, $130 million, whatever he’s getting paid, man,” Clark said, via Brian Witt of NBCSportsBayArea.com. “He’s gotta throw the ball. Obviously he didn’t do that. They threw for about 200 yards on checkdowns; that ain’t enough to win a game against us.”

Garoppolo finished the game 20-of-31 for 219 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions.

The play-calling balance wasn’t in his favor, as he threw 20 times in the second half and they ran just 10 — after advancing to the title game with Garoppolo throwing just eight times against the Packers.

But Garoppolo certainly had chances to make plays, and his overthrown deep ball to Emmanuel Sanders was the biggest.

Throughout the year, the 49ers game-planned around their quarterback more than relied on him to be the reason they won. And when that didn’t work in the Super Bowl, it opened the door for Clark to talk.

  1. As a Drew Brees fan, it was annoying to see the 49ers get away with such subpar QB play. Hooray for the small market teams! Boo the large market golden child(s)

  2. Garoppolo is ok, he’s not a bad QB. But the team he is on, and the good Offensive system the 49ers have don’t ask him to do much, and pad his stats.
He’d good enough to win with, unless you don’t try and run down the clock, just like when you lost to the Patriots.

Is garoppolo over paid for his level of talent? Maybe. But it’s not easy finding a competent replacement. There are worse QBs out there. How would you like to have Marcus Mariota?

  3. He is 100% correct. The only way the 49ers were going to win was if they were able to complete at least 35 passes. JG can not consistently go out and do that, hes just not that good and the coaching staff knows it. 3rd and 10, game winning drive, GJ goes deep and misses instead of attempting a high percentage pass to put them into a manageable 4th down. That’s all you need to know.

  4. Such class! This is representative of the KC Chiefs – team full of punks and enabling management . You just won the Super Bowl, keep that arrogant punk nonsense to yourself. It will be fun to watch them fall on their faces next year.

  5. There is something to be said about winning with class. Obviously that would be asking too much Mr. Clark. The world is full of people who don’t deserve what they have. This is no different.

  6. Jimmy Garoppolo led his team to the super bowl and got beat by a better QB. It happens all the time. No shame in that. Dan Marino got beat by Joe Montana in the super bowl. 30 other starting QBs watched the game from their couch. Mahomes is the best QB on the planet right now. Just enjoy it.

  7. I’ll say this for the 49ers: They’ve crafted an offensive scheme that takes advantage of defenses built around defending the pass. However, without a bellcow back, their running game is still gimmicky and it caught up to them at the worst moment.

Relying on gimmicks never, ever win you the big enchilada.

  8. JG had the chance to shine and didn’t. That is a fact. The coaches also got away from what helped them get to the SB. Run run run. Sad loss.

  9. I watched the interview. It wasn’t so much ripping Jimmy it was criticizing SF coaches for play calling. Again he is right.

Starting to think that Garoppolo isn’t going to be a 49er for much longer.

  10. This guy is as bad as Lane Johnson. How’d that work out for your team Lane? JG gets the job done and you can look at their record without him to prove his worth. Kyle needs to run the flipping ball though in the 4th. Come on man.

  11. Hey Frank, The Chiefs pay you 104 million to do more than just one SACK in a superbowl. Granted it was a very crucial sack, but before you run your mouth do more than just one play.

  12. The 49’ers offense is getting too much flak here.

The 49er’s Defense gave up 21 points in the last 8 minutes of the Superbowl.

It’s a team game – Mahomes is awesome and the Chiefs deserve to win.

But pointing fingers shows a complete lack of class and sporstmanship.

  13. What do Jimmy G, Carson Wentz, and Kirk Cousins have in common? Contrast: What do Pat Mahomes, Russ Wilson, and Drew Brees have in common? Both groups do fine in ordinary moments, but one group consistently shines in the biggest, toughest moments. Obviously, no QB is perfect all the time, and their teams matter, but still, which group would you rather pick a QB from for the big moments?

  14. I seem to remember this same Chiefs defense did the same thing to Brady at Gillette. Where was Clark’s criticism then?

Coming from the biggest non factor in the game
    ======

Essentially ended the Super Bowl with his timely sack.

    LOL

    AND he’s right.

  16. Check this reality. Garappolo outplayed Mahomes for 3 and half quarters. Refs couldn’t call holding on KC which happened every other play. Couldn’t call roughing the passer on the helmet to helmet hit or the late shove on Garappolo out of bounds. Another bias gift wrapped win by the Refs for a KC team that was outplayed all night.

  17. “Where are those guys who said the Pats would have still won SuperBowls with Jimmy G rather than Brady?”

    ====================================

Jimmy G losing in one Superbowl with the 9ers actually has nothing to do with potential Superbowls he may have won with the Patriots.

  18. I find it hilarious that Niners fans don’t like what Frank Clark is saying, while they have the most arrogant big mouth in the league who runs his mouth all the time — Richard Sherman.

  19. I think everyone is aware Jimmy G is overpaid. No news there. When you lose say little, when you win say less.

  20. Uh, Jimmy G didn’t give up three TDs in the fourth quarter.

Besides that, the elephant in the room is that Frank Clark is a bitter winner.
How low class of him to not just relish in his teams win but instead to spend time degrading your opponent, after you’ve won the game? And on the refereeing, NFL officiating was a joke before this latest debacle. From the same head ref who blew it the year before, no less.

  21. Jimmy played 3 playoff games this year and had 3 INT’s. One for every game and he could have had more. Tough trying to win a SB when you know going into the game your QB will cough up at least 1 INT.
