Report: Lions trying to sign Darius Slay to long-term deal

The Lions continue to have contract talks with cornerback Darius Slay on a long-term deal, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports.

Fowler, though, added that the Lions could seek to trade Slay if they can’t reach a deal in the coming weeks.

There was some thought the Lions would trade Diggs at the deadline last season, especially after he expressed his displeasure about the team’s decision to trade starting safety Quandre Diggs to the Seahawks. They didn’t then. Will they now if they can’t get a long-term deal?

Slay isn’t happy with his current contract, which is set to pay him a $10 million base salary in 2020. He skipped the team’s offseason work in 2019 to make his point.

He did report to training camp on time but said then that everybody in the world knows he’s underpaid.

Slay, 29, has made three Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro in 2017.

  1. He’s not even good, the guy’s had one decent season and Trubisky and Miller OWN big gh3y slay!

  2. Hope they find a way to extend Big Play! With Quinn and Patricia calling to shots, however, a trade to Seattle for a 6th rounder would not surprise me.

  3. By the time the Lions get good in 2-3 years, if they do, Slay will be on the downward slide. Seems to make more sense to trade him now when his value is high.

  4. Eagles should give them a 2nd round pick for Slay and then sign him to a 5 year contract . . . they need to begin the overhaul and rebuilding of a sub-par and/or aging secondary.

  5. Quinn and Patricia are under orders to win now. They are going to try to over sign Slay because the secondary is woefully thin and the Lions have about two dozen other holes to fill.

The question is on Slay. Will he take what the Lions are offering, or is he so soured with the franchise (can’t blame him) that he waits and walks.

  6. Yeah Darius Slay is not good enough to stop Trubisky’s shredding pass attack. We should definitely get some trade value while we still can for “No play Slay.”
