Dolphins’ 2020 promotional video omits some key players

Accidents rarely happen when it comes to the promotional efforts of NFL teams, with perhaps the exception of the notorious 2013 Lions calendar. For the Dolphins, a one-minute 2020 promotional video that omits multiple key players is raising questions and eyebrows.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel lists who’s in and who’s out of the video, wondering what message the team was sending via the absence of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (who recently has said he’ll play in 2020), cornerback Xavien Howard (who was arrested for domestic battery in late December), safety Reshad Jones, defensive back Eric Rowe, offensive lineman Jesse Davis, center Daniel Kilgore, linebacker Jerome Baker, and linebacker Raekwon McMillan.

Making prominent appearances in the video are receiver DeVante Parker, receiver Allen Hurns, receiver Preston Williams, cornerback Nik Needham, tight end Mike Gesicki, tight end Davon Godchaux, safety Bobby McCain, and defensive lineman Christian Wilkins.

“[P]layers do pay attention to who gets put on billboards, season ticket renewal packages and which five jerseys get mass produced by Nike for sale in the team store,” Kelly accurately observes. “They know stuff like these promotional videos cross the desk of the team’s decision-makers and nothing used, or more importantly omitted, is accidental.”

So a message has been sent, both as to the guys in the video — and as to the guys not in the video. What the message means will be seen in the coming months.

  1. Typical Miami front office screw the pooch. I understand some of them not being in video but come on man. Baker and McMillan have to be back next season right!!!!
Howard who cares. Fitz has to come back. Rowe will be back..
Jones too expensive, Kilgore maybe as a backup

  2. From top to bottom the last decade or so has shown what this franchise is really like under Stephen Ross. Ross really doesn’t have 1 successful “football move” that he can point to since buying the team. The nfl product would improve drastically if there was a rule that could force an owner to sell if after ten years they have no playoff success or any success period. And “No” getting the super bowl to Miami certainly doesn’t count.

  3. “absence of … cornerback Xavien Howard (who was arrested for domestic battery in late December)”

Right, and if they DID promote Howard, you’d be first here to be whining about how the NFL doesn’t care about domestic abuse…

Well that would mean a quarter of the NFL teams would be looking for new owners

  5. Yea but what about Baker and mcmillan??don’t know why fitz isn’t in it,but the LB’s ESPESIALLY Baker I don’t get??but we are talkin the Dolphins here, wouldn’t surprise me at all if they just screwed it up!!

  6. Possibly by avoiding the bad look Howard’s inclusion would potentially create, they decided to omit players most would have promoted to make his exclusion less noticeable. Maybe messages are also being sent that we don’t understand as we aren’t privy to what really happens behind the scenes.

When you consider that 4 franchises have never been to a super bowl, 8 franchises have never won one, and franchises like the Dolphins haven’t won a super bowl since the early 70s…owners should be forced to put out a good product or be voted out by other owners. Nfl is a profit sharing business.

  8. Key players? Key to the worst run game in the league? Or was it the lowest sack production that caught your eye? Or run defense that was non-existent. Worrying about being in a video should be the last thing on any players mind. Try improving your play 1st and your photo shoots maybe not so much.
