Michigan State requested an interview with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh for its head coaching job, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports.

Saleh, though, informed school officials Friday that he plans to stay in San Francisco for another season, per Pelissero, as Saleh “feels he has unfinished business.”

Saleh, 41, is a Michigan native who began his coaching career at Michigan State as a defensive assistant in 2002.

Saleh interviewed with the Browns for their head coaching vacancy before they hired Kevin Stefanski. He could have even more opportunities to get a head coaching job in the NFL next year.

The 49ers ranked second in yards allowed, eighth in points allowed and first in passing yards allowed in Saleh’s third season as the team’s defensive coordinator.

  1. Good for SF. Like his passion and determination to win. Hopefully, he does well again ……just not better against the Seahawks. NFL needs to keep their quality coaches.

  2. It’s going to be tough to replace Coach Dantonio who is a great defensive mind. He also preached toughness and strict fundamentals. Pat Narduzzi maybe?

  3. Not saying hes not a good coach – but its amazing how some of these guys become Hot Head Coach Candidates when they have great players.

They were talking up Adam Gase a few yrs ago because of his work with Peyton Manning in Denver! Like Manning needed a coach – what a joke!

  4. I wouldn’t hire this guy for any HC job. His defense failed in the most critical moments on a national stage in front of millions and millions. Not to mention the defense is chocked full of high first round draft picks because the 9ers have been junk for the past 7 years. Talent got them to the level of play they reached and when they needed coaching, they failed. (4th qtr Super Bowl)

  5. There’s a saying, “strike while the iron’s hot.”

Niners’ defense will degrade as cap casualties eat away at depth and he’ll return to being the fool sideline performer without results.

13-3 and a highly rated defense. They played half a quarter of bad ball. The rest of the season they were better than dang near everybody in defense.
    You’re an idiot.

  7. Saleh might want to take a look at the MSU. 49ers aren’t winning a Super Bowl with Kyle Shanahan as head coach. He’s blown 2 already with his awful play calling.

He took over the 32nd ranked defense in the NFL. That 32nd ranked defense included Buckner, Armstead, Tartt, and Ward. The defense was ranked 18th 2 years ago and they also had Sherman, Witherspoon, and Fred Warner. They had 2 pro-bowlers on defense this year. Lots of teams had more than 2 pro-bowlers on defense. Since the Ravens had twice as many pro-bowlers on defense, why weren’t they better? When it comes to talent, there are teams with more talent on defense.

The 49ers also spent loads of money bringing in Ford. Then they went out and signed Alexander, They used their 1st round pick (2nd overall selection) on Bosa. I think you’ll see things even out this year. I’m unsure about your comment on Pro Bowlers. Does not being in the Pro Bowl mean you are not good? I watched Sherman get burned time and time again in the playoffs and Super Bowl, yet he was voted to the Pro Bowl. How’s this for being in the Pro Bowl, Tannehill was selected over Brady.
