Jameis Winston undergoes LASIK surgery to repair vision

It might sound like a joke, but it’s not: Jameis Winston recently underwent eye surgery.

As he was throwing his 30 interceptions in 2019, Winston drew questions about whether he could see. Winston squints as a result of being nearsighted since at least his Florida State days.

“He can’t read the scoreboard but he can see the guys in front of him,” Bucs coach Bruce Arians said in the final press conference of 2019. “So he’s alright.”

Still, Winston underwent LASIK surgery to repair his vision, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Who knows whether Winston’s eyesight played a part in his penchant for throwing balls to the other team? Maybe it was merely poor decision-making.

But Winston recently posted a picture on Instagram of him wearing oversized, dark sunglasses.

The procedure reshapes the cornea to enable light entering the eye to properly focus onto the retina for clearer vision.

It is unknown if anyone associated with the team requested Winston have the surgery or he did it on his own.

Winston led the NFL in passing yards with 5,109 and threw 33 touchdowns.

  1. Hitters in baseball need excellent vision. Most other positions/tasks do not. I expect him to struggle as he adjusts, then a return to form. His interceptions are a result of a poor decision-making matrix, not poor vision.

  2. Can’t hurt. If he had trouble focusing with guys running full-speed so close together especially if the uniforms are similar colors, they could blur together.

  3. I’ve had LASIK…. If this is a true story and he really could not see the scoreboard the difference will be night and day. I just can’t fathom nobody thought about this earlier. Have they not seen Major League?!?

  4. Hopefully this move will cause some insane GM out there to take a chance on him and get him out of Tampa…
Tampa has been tortured long enough and starting this new decade with even a chance at an NfL caliber QB being brought in this season would be such a welcome change by a vast majority of their fans base!

  5. What kind of absolute geniuses who run/coach the Bucs let their QB play in a game without him being able to read the scoreboard? I loathe Winston and he’s obviously part of the blame here, but WTF?

Cowboys will sign Winston for $20M if the Bucs sign Prescott for $40M

  7. This is good! I have been saying this for years. Even at Florida State he would squint all the time.

I wonder if he was wearing contact lenses. Another year in Coach Bruce’s system and if they get him a running back and he can finally see? Super Bowl Bucs!

  8. In college he had to squint pretty hard to see the big poster boards they used to signal in plays. Probably long overdue for LASIK or contacts maybe this will help.
