Bruce Arians: We need to keep defensive free agents or QB won’t matter

The Buccaneers have a decision to make about their quarterback for the 2020 season, but there wasn’t an update about the team’s thoughts from head coach Bruce Arians on Thursday.

Arians said that the team is till waiting to see what all of their options will be before moving forward with any course of action. One of the possible avenues for the team to go down is re-signing Jameis Winston, but Arians said that other issues are also priorities for the team this offseason.

Arians focused on keeping the team’s defensive free agents by saying, via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, that “it doesn’t matter who the quarterback is because we’d be back to square one. who the quarterback is because we’d be back to square one” if the defense took a step back from where it was at the end of last season.

The list of impending defensive free agents in Tampa includes Shaq Barrett, Jason Pierre-Paul, Ndamukong Suh and Carl Nassib, so keeping everyone may be beyond the team’s reach but it’s clear Arians doesn’t want to be making too many changes on that side of the ball.

  1. that “it doesn’t matter who the quarterback is because we’d be back to square one. who the quarterback is because we’d be back to square one”

    Wut

  2. Kind of refreshing how honest and blunt his answers are.

I like BB as a coach, but wouldn’t mind occasionally hearing something like this from him.

  3. I wouldn’t read too much into it. I think he’ll keep Winston around (Winston has upside and age on his side also having the eye surgery helps). The Buccaneers are only a few weapons off from winning it all. Secure the O-line, get a great running back in the draft and able to solidify the defense…game on!!!

  4. It was just a matter of time after the super bowl that the self proclaimed maven of football would open his mouth when he should just keep quiet.

  5. You’ll need all the defense you get with a QB that donates the ball as frequently as he makes touchdowns. There are plenty of QB’s who throw fewer interceptions and your defense will be that much better by defacto.

  6. So what I’m getting out of all this is Arians may be saying:

He is REALLY hoping there is a better option behind door #2 so he can have a chance at a winning season in 2020 BUT IF he is stuck with Winston then they are going to need the best defense under the sun to stop the ints from becoming ‘pick 6s’ so somehow hopefully the defense can nullify the incompetence of their qb!

For his sake, I sure hope door #2 holds the Bucs an of the future!
