Kyle Juszczyk frustrated by criticism of Jimmy Garoppolo

49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk has heard the criticism of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo that followed the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV and he doesn’t like it.

Juszczyk made an appearance on NFL Network Friday and said “one of the most frustrating parts of the whole loss” has been seeing the harsh appraisals of Garoppolo and head coach Kyle Shanahan in the wake of the Niners going from being up 20-10 in the fourth quarter to losing the game 31-20 to the Chiefs.

“You look at Jimmy, for people that are stats guys, 4,000 yards passing, better than a 2-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, 70 percent completion, you just look at that, that’s a phenomenal quarterback,” Juszczyk said. “Anybody’s going to sign up for that early in the season. But for whatever reason, Jimmy just seems to get this extra criticism, this extra heat. But I think at one point in the game, he’s like 19 for 22, 180 yards and a touchdown.”

Like many others, Juszczyk noted that hitting one deep pass to Emmanuel Sanders could have turned the tide of the game and created a new narrative for the quarterback. He called it “unfortunate that one or two plays can really change everyone’s outlook on someone,” but it’s the reality for Garoppolo and the Niners until they find their way back to the field this year.

  1. The criticism is well deserved. It doesnt matter If the has 4000 yards in the regular Season. The great qbs make plays when the teams needs the most. Just look to mahomes in the same game. Sanders had at least 2 yards of separation. Does anyone imagine Rodgers, brees, Brady or mahomes missing that pass?

  2. Dude, your team just lost a VERY winnable Super Bowl. Garoppolo came up small in a big game, and Shanahan lost a lead in the Super Bowl again. If the criticism surprises you, what exactly were you expecting?

I remember Rodgers, Brees and Brady not being in the Superbowl and Jimmy G being there. His first full year as a starter, leading his team on multiple game winning drives. To blame it on all on Jimmy G is lazy. He’s a big reason why they got there. Watch football, and you’ll understand what I’m saying.

  4. He’s Alex Smith. Nothing wrong with that as he’s a good player. Over his career Alex Smith is a mixed bag in big games but if everything aligns, he could probably win you a championship with stellar defensive play and a great run game.

  5. He’s right about Garappolo, but not about Shanhan. 9ers had the SB in hand and gave it up largely due to Shanahan’s play calling.

  6. If Jimmy Garrappolo couldn’t win a Superbowl with that amazing defense, run game, slew of receiving talent, solid offensive line, and a 10 point lead with 8 minutes in the game… then he never will. Those are the facts. Jimmy will never be as close to winning a SB again with that many advantages.

  7. Great QB make throws when needed yes, not that one, Coach is the problem to call that play. There was a stat quoted on this site that best QBs like Mahomes have competed only 40% of 40+ yard throws

  9. 12 of jimmy garbagolo’s 27 touchdowns were against
the 32nd and 29th ranked defenses in the nfl.

8 td against 32nd ranked defense in the nfl – Arizona
4 td against 29th ranked defense in the nfl – Cincinnati

There was a phantom PI call against SF with handfighting going on that ruined a simply gorgeous throw and play.

Shanahan has a bad habit of avoiding the run. Period. Has nothing to do with JimmyG

Mahomes sucked badly and JimmyG was on pace to break Simms’s sb21 mvp passing % mark. It was an exhibition in efficiency. Mahomes has Goodell in his back pocket because they are obsessed with promoting him. Mahomes was awful.

Try watching the game, little guy. When Brady throws to much and ignores the run, he falls off, too.

Millennials don’t watch football. They watch stat lines. They watch for fantasy football purposes on laptops. That’s why they don’t get the game.

    Mahomes was terrible.

  12. Except for one pass to Hill and one to a Watkins, Mahomes did not anything the the whole game. He caught SF defense sleeping but that is what good QB do. But then I never thought that SF had good secondary. Their mojo was pass rush and they lost it in last 6min.

  13. 9ers got away from who they are in the 2nd half. they run the ball and play defense, that got them to the SB and would of won it had their coach stuck to what worked all season.

Mahomes wasnt even good in that game it was handed to him.

  14. Big Ben to Santonio Holmes in SBXLIII…now that is putting it where you need to in a “crunch time” situation. Jimmys day will come!

  15. 2019 Minnesota Vikings PASS Defense – 15th ranked in nfl = 1 td – 1 int

    2019 Green Bay Packers PASS Defense = 14th ranked in nfl = 0 td – 0 int

    2019 Kansas City Chiefs PASS Defense = 8th ranked in nfl = 1 td – 2 int

  16. Get over it. If the 49ers would have won, all the geniuses would be criticizing Mahomes and Andy Reid. Since K.C. won, they’re criticizing Garoppolo and Shanahan. That’s just the society we’re living in right now. Instead of crediting the winners, we’d rather bash the losers. I guess that makes us feel better.

  17. The jimmy garbagolo defenders
    need to accept the fact…

… having the 2nd ranked DEFENSE in the nfl
is reason for the teams success.

NOT the 13th ranked garbagolo-led PASS Offense.

    The A.J Green-less, tight end-less,
    offensive line-less 19th ranked Cincinnati PASS Offense (228.3 yards/avg.)
totaled only 8.7 yards less than jimmy’s PASS Offense (237 yard/avg.).

    8.7 yards!!!

Jimmy G is a loser this year just like 30 other QBs.
Mahomes and the Chiefs are the ONLY winners this year.

    >Mahomes was terrible.

    Good running back though

    —-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Yeah that 3 and 15 throw was terrible.
Calling for the play on that down and distance was a bad idea too.
That td pass to Kelce had below average quarterback written all over it.

The narrative that he is a running back is lazy. Does a running back throw for 5000 yards and 50 touchdowns?

Your statement makes you look like an idiot. Your lack of football knowledge is alarming. Maybe you are just bitter, clamoring for Patty Mahomes .

You don’t have to be a fan but I don’t know how you can’t acknowledge his ability as a qb. I hated Elway but I could acknowledge that he was a great qb.

I hated Manning but guess what, I was aware of his once in a generation greatness.

You writing this statement just shows how ill informed you are at the understanding of how an NFL football game works.

  20. The only way I thought SF would win (I was picking KC to win even though it pains me as a Broncos’ fan, I also hate Richard Sherman so it really didn’t matter in the end) is if Garoppolo managed the game and the defense did its job. Didn’t even pay enough attention to game to realize Garoppolo threw more than 29 passes (I bet under on that). This loss is more on Shanahan than Garoppolo. Garoppolo has like less than 30 games as a starter he wasn’t going to win you the game if it got into a shootout vs. Mahomes.

Reminds me of Super Bowl 50. Manning only had to manage game and defense did their job.

  21. @Tylaw

Look at this guy defending his dear Jimmy G, the love that got away. Brady threw practically every play in the second half of that 28-3 SB win over the Falcons. Jimmy couldn’t even ice a 10 point 4th quarter lead.

Should they have run the ball? Probably. But when it came time to convert game winning downs with his arm, he failed. Miserably. But hey, keep propping up your boy that Belichik shipped off. Bill has another ring to show for it. Jimmy? Nothing yet.

  22. The overthrown ball to Sander was an idiotic call.

Even if Garapollo completes that pass, they give the ball back to Mahomes with 1:30 on the clock and the Chiefs needing only a FG to tie. Niners would have been far better off to try for the first down, bleed the clock and try to score at the end from closer range.

  23. Garappollo is not the main reason they lost the game. The whole team lost focus in the 4th quarter. They thought they had it in the bag because Mahones was playing bad and they had a nice lead.

It’s the coach’s responsibility to keep the team pumped up for 60 minutes. I was watching a bunch of their players and they just seemed to lose their intensity. Maybe a sports psychologist could explain what happened.

  24. That loss is on Shanahan. Any criticism of any of the 49ers players is misplaced.
He not only didn’t start his best RB, he didn’t even give him a carry until the 2nd quarter. Then while nursing a lead, he AGAIN refused to give the ball to Mostert to grind out the clock and get first downs. It’s like the guy doesn’t know how to finish in big games.
