Tony Romo sounds as if he has decided who he will broadcast for in 2020

Other than the beginning of his career, when he entered the league as an undrafted free agent, and the end of his career, when the Cowboys cut him, Tony Romo never truly was a free agent in the NFL. He isn’t really one now either in the broadcasting world, with CBS holding the right of first refusal.

But, with his contract expired, the former quarterback is free talk to other networks.

“Right now, obviously we’re in that free agent-kind-of-position, but in my brain, it’s one of those things where you talk to your wife, the people that know you at your core,” Romo said Tuesday on 97.1 The Eagle. “You just have to figure out what’s important, and try and make the best decision possible. I mean, obviously I’m trying to say it the right way here, but I do feel like there is no perfect answer. It’s just a matter of me going through it, and I’ve never been through this in the broadcasting world. It’s just something I’m basically learning.

“It reminds me a lot when I was in year two with the Dallas Cowboys. I had no idea how to negotiate with Jerry Jones. It’s like, I just want to play. You don’t really know any better. I feel like this thing won’t be that. . . All I want is like an obvious answer, right? You just want something to be very straight-forward.”

With CBS ultimately holding the final card, and Romo having become among the best in the business as an analyst, it would rank as a major surprise if Romo doesn’t end up back beside Jim Nantz on CBS’ No. 1 broadcast team in the fall. Romo could command an eight-figure annual offer.

“I think I’m already there a little bit, but we’ll see how it plays it, even though I think I already know, but I’m just not telling you guys,” Romo said, laughing.

  1. I talked with Tony about it at the Pebble Beach tour stop one night and then a couple days later Jim told me Tony wants to stay with CBS. I’m still tying up some loose ends elsewhere but think it’s best, so I’ll probably approve it. So now you know.

  2. “Please don’t go to the Monday Night broadcast. They don’t deserve Romo like talent.”

Ain’t nobody does MNF like Booger.

  3. Tony very full of himself these days, too bad you couldn’t make it as an nfl quarterback or make the cut at a golf tournament. Tony “Mediocre “ Romo

  4. Being slightly above average at casually talking about football is no great accomplishment. You folks seem to love creating and destroying egomaniacs. Nasty business.

  5. CBS gets the Super Bowl. ESPN doesn’t. ESPN also gets bad games for MNF. Decision is easy.

  6. Guess I’m in the minority, but I think he’s horrible. The most annoying guy on TV. Much rather have Dan Fouts or Trent Green on CBS #1 team. Just because he has the ability to call what play might be coming doesn’t offset his annoying voice and school girl inflection. But that’s just me.

  7. Just think about this for a minute …..
Without Romo we would have had Phil Simms these past few years.

    I repeat Phil Simms.

CBS pay the money his money.

10,000,000 a year to talk on tv for 3 hrs a week?

Seems like a ridiculous amount for any network to pay any broadcaster.

$25 million a year to play a game on TV for 3 hrs a week?

Seems like a ridiculous amount for any business to pay any athlete.

  11. Jim Nantz, along with Al Michaels, are probably the two most iconic voices in national sports broadcasting and certainly for NFL games. Not sure why Romo would want to leave the booth with Nantz even if the money was slightly more. What are the other choices? Work with Joe Buck or whoever ESPN throws in the booth for MNF? Even a talented voice like Sean McDonough couldn’t last on MNF. The Nantz/Romo combo is a winner and as a fan I’d like to see it continue a bit longer.

Several hundred billion dollars to broadcast 5 or 6 3 hour games a week seems like a ridiculous amount for networks to pay 31 already billionaire businessmen who own sports teams.(GB not owned by a billionaire). And so it goes….

  13. He is the best and most charismatic announcer in the NFL. A lot of announcers are so bad now I just find a radio station with the game and mute the TV, watch game and listen to radio.

That’s what happens when you’re one of about 20 humans who can effectively get the job done in a billion dollar business

I wish! Although he didn’t offer anything close to the depth of the great Cris Collinsworth, I was a huge fan of Phil Simms’ unwavering enthusiasm and love of the game. And he never phoned it in – his energy was always high, even in blowouts. I especially enjoyed his pairing with Greg Gumbel, and was deeply disappointed when Gumbel was replaced by unctuous golf announcer, Jim Nantz.

  16. Tony has quickly proven himself to be one of the best at translating the game to viewers at home in a way that adds value to the broadcast and to the league. There are some scenarios in the next few years where MNF could be moving networks between Disney owned ESPN and ABC. That could be a huge pull to throw money at Romo knowing that it’s a long term play. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jim Nantz was discussed as part of a Romo/Nantz to ABC/ESPN package though Nantz is firmly entrenched in CBS as he covers many events for them. You’d likely be looking at $25M to sign the pair. Not a lot of money when you consider the legitimacy it would bring while ABC prepares to invest billions into a new TV package.
