Report: Bud Dupree leaves CAA ahead of free agency

Linebacker Bud Dupree may be changing teams this offseason and it looks like he’ll have someone new representing him in negotiations on a new contract in Pittsburgh or elsewhere.

Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal reports that Dupree has left CAA Sports and is looking for a new agency to represent him in future contract talks. NFLPA rules call for a five-day waiting period before Dupree can sign with a new agent.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II said in January that the team will do their best to keep Dupree coming off of an 11.5-sack season for Pittsburgh. The franchise tag is one option available to the team and hasn’t been ruled out. The price would come in around $16 million to keep Dupree in the fold that way.

The deadline to use the tag is March 10. That leaves a good chunk of time for Dupree’s next representatives and the Steelers to start hashing things out.

  1. I would NOT over pay for Bud. He had one good season and it happened to be a contract year.
He also struggles to contain the edge and gets upfield way too fast. I’d rather invest in Hargrave.

So, would you also change your defensive scheme for the sole purpose of fitting Hargrave in? Or, would you be willing to dump either Heyward or Tuitt completely? If you said no to both of those, then you’re basically saying you’d pay a ton for a guy that plays ~45% of defensive snaps most years (more last year because Tuitt was injured).

Dupree, by comparison, plays 80-90% of snaps.

  3. An all time 1st rd bust. Not Jarvis Jones level, but he never made impact plays in 4 years in Pitt.

Don’t tell me about collecting meaningless sacks on a crap D and a .500 team either.

Speaking of all-time busts, how’s Isaiah Wynn looking these days? May finally be on track to play more games than he misses this year. Only time will tell.

Easy to not have a “crap D” when your schedule consists almost entirely of teams at the bottom of the league offensively, but what do I know. There’s no way that could explain why the Pats were immediately exposed once they got into the playoffs and were embarrassed by Derrick Henry.

Also strange that Dupree’s so bad, seeing as how he had more sacks, QB hits, and forced fumbles than anyone on the Pats roster. If he did the same thing last year playing in NE, you’d be arguing for him to get the Comeback Player of the Year award.

  5. Steelers are going to have to give away another first round pick just to unload Dud Dupree. When do they finally get a first round pick? 2025? I lost count.
