Tua Tagovailoa would choose to play for Cowboys if given the chance

If Tua Tagovailoa had his choice, he’d go from playing for one of the most iconic brands in college football to playing for one of the most iconic brands in the NFL.

In an interview with the NFL Network, Tagovailoa said he grew up a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and his ideal circumstance would include being drafted by the team in the April.

“We’ve looked at teams,” Tagovailoa said. “We’ve talked about teams. We’ve talked to teams. Somebody might trade up and you could possibly drop or you could possibly go higher. We’ve been talking about all those scenarios.

“If you’re saying to me, if I can choose what team I want to play on, as far as my favorite team growing up, then I probably tell you the Cowboys.”

Of course, the Cowboys aren’t exactly in need of drafting a quarterback with Dak Prescott in the picture and Tagovailoa acknowledged that Dallas is far down the draft order as well in holding the 17th overall pick.

“I’m not trying to bump him. I’ll learn under him,” Tagovailoa said of Prescott. “I’d handle it the way that the coaches there want to handle it. Honestly, I just want to be able play again. I wouldn’t mind learning under whatever guy that’s the starter. Give me a whole year to rest up and then go back out and compete, but I just want to go back out and play.”

Outside of the Cowboys placing the franchise tag on Prescott for one season and somehow drafting Tagovailoa with the intention of moving on from Prescott after 2020 campaign, there’s no logical reason for Tagovailoa to end up in Dallas. The one benefit beyond landing with his favorite team would be the year in the shadows to continue healing from the hip injury that ended his final year at Alabama. However, the Cowboys have been steadfast in saying Prescott is the team’s future at the quarterback position.

  1. Obviously Dak’s Agent is not Tua’s & won’t be happy here as the Cowboys are given some leverage here. Franchise Dak ? Yeah, that works if you then successfully trade up for Tua’. Dak won’t want to sign the tag until he has too, so that doesn’t bode well for a SB run.

I agree with PFT; not a likely scenario.

  2. It would be interesting to see how far Tua could take this talented Cowboys team. I don’t think Jerry has the stones to make a play for Tua. Jimmy Johnson would do it.

  3. Kid dropped a bit with those comments IMHO.

Doesn’t understand the draft or NFL very well if he thinks Cowboys can ‘choose’ to draft him without giving up a lot to move up.

  4. Unlike future bengal Joe Burrow, Tua did not say the right thing here. I’m sure he was semi coerced into saying what team he wants to play for. But he’ll regret these remarks when chosen by the Detroit. Dallas should be happy that Tua isn’t an option for them. Dak is a pro bowl caliber qb.

  5. If I was a top prospect I’d love it for all teams to pass on me so I could go to a very strong team.
    But thats fantasy land.
In reality the weaker teams get to pick first, and I’d play my hardest for whoever drafted me. Hopefully they could improve.

Look at the 49ers in 2018 vs 2019.

I hate seeing prospects making comments like “I wish I could go to X”.
Just be happy you get drafted and play for whoever drafts you. If you are any good, you will get paid, and can leave later on, after you have proven yourself.

  6. Hey, all you folks claiming his surgery went well (they ALL do) and that he is just fine and the Dolphins/Lions should draft him…

“Honestly, I just want to be able play again. I wouldn’t mind learning under whatever guy that’s the starter. Give me a whole year to rest up and then go back out and compete, but I just want to go back out and play.”

Does THAT sound like a guy that will be ready to go next year? All the reports say he is way ahead of schedule or that he looks great and everything is perfect. That is PR. Every pre-draft medical prognosis by the handlers say their injured athlete is special and healing like wolverine. There is NO WAY that guy should go in the top 10.

  7. Can somebody get this guy an agent who can explain what you should say in an interview. Somebody break out the Bull Durham clip there meat.

  8. This just further illustrates how far reaching the Cowboys brand. No matter the success rate, the brand is number 1 in recognition and association.

  9. Rather work out a tag and trade with Dak, start with Tua, than go down the $40 million a year road with a stat accumulator.

  10. If I had a say, I would tag Dak and then try to trade him, throw in a pick or two, to a team in the top 5 that needs a quarterback. Then draft a quarterback that they can have for the next five years at a rookie contract. Dak ain’t worth $40 mil, nor is he worth $30 mil. His ego is, but he ain’t. If he is so damn good, why did defenses dare him to beat them by defending the run? The only teams he could beat last year were non-playoff teams. You really want to handicap this team financially with an average quarterback?

  11. Who says the Cowboys want Tua?
That guy has had 3 major injuries, including 2 requiring surgery in college. Who’s saying he’s going to be less fragile in the NFL?
He would not be the first NFL career derailed by injury after his college career was derailed by injury.
