Ben Roethlisberger begins throwing a football again

The Steelers released a video Saturday containing no comment. Not that it needed any.

A video is worth more than a thousand words.

It showed Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger throwing a football again, albeit lightly.

The throwing session came during an evaluation in Los Angeles with his orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, on Friday, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

ElAttrache performed surgery on Roethlisberger’s throwing elbow in September.

Roethlisberger is “working his rear off” to rehab from the injury that ended his 2019 season after two games, according to Dulac.

Mike Tomlin became the latest member of the Steelers organization to express optimism about Roethlisberger’s recovery. The coach said earlier this week he has “no hesitation” about Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger will work with his throwing coaches in Los Angeles before returning to Pittsburgh, per Dulac.

Roethlisberger’s ability to “spin” the football will determine the extent of his recovery, with his spin-rate numbers being compared to his baseline numbers, Dulac adds.

Roethlisberger, who turns 38 next month, has played 16 seasons.

  1. Steelers better draft or sign a free agent QB, because Big Ben is done… Big Ben has to be about 280- 300 lbs… If Ben can’t move then he is a sitting target. Not a Steelers fan but their days of glory are gone. Need new HC & QB!

  2. It was just awesome to see Big Ben throwing a football, and NOT a tennis ball as some said he might start out with. And yes, for not playing football for a season, he looked to be in pretty good shape compared to what some were saying. Welcome back Big Ben! Go Steelers!

  3. Looks like he swallowed a few footballs. Maybe they should have done the stomach staple surgery while they were at it.

  4. It’s going to be some time before it’s really known if Ben can come back and play at a reasonably high level next season. Probably not until training camp.

  5. Ben is not in football shape. Hardly could be not being able to do much.
Ben is not 300 lbs as this video indicates.
Where do I place my bet for COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR?

  6. It doesn’t take long to get back in shape playing football. Big Ben’s not been playing football for 6 months why would he be in perfect shape. He’ll shed off pounds easy come training camp. Now Byron Leftwich was out of shape.
