Derek Carr creates speculation of a trade to Bears, David Carr says he’s trolling

Getty Images

The future of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has been the subject of much speculation this offseason, and Carr himself is fueling some of that speculation.

Carr posted on Instagram a picture of himself and former teammate Khalil Mack, now with the Bears. Several media outlets took that as a hint that Carr was hinting as a reunion in Chicago, and wrote about the possibility that the Bears were preparing to trade for Carr as a replacement for the disappointing starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

But Carr’s brother, former NFL quarterback and current broadcaster David Carr, said on NFL Network that nothing should be read into Derek Carr’s post.

“His son’s favorite movie is Trolls. He’s just having fun. It’s the offseason,” David Carr said of his brother.

Derek Carr may just be trolling, but he may also be sending a subtle message to the Raiders that if they don’t want him some other team will. The Raiders reportedly have interest in signing Tom Brady in free agency, and if they were to do that, Carr would be on the trade block.

The biggest problem with a Bears trade scenario is that Carr has a base salary of $18.9 million this season, and the Bears currently have about $18 million in cap space. The Bears would have a hard time managing their salary cap if they traded for Carr (or any other quarterback who’s earning starter money). So while Carr being traded remains a possibility, a reunion with Mack on the Bears would be hard to pull off.

  1. Carr and Mack have been close friends for years, I wouldn’t read into it.

As for the Bears cap, they’ve been Macked. They’re stuck with an overrated DE who disapears in some games that eats up a crazy amount of cap space.

  2. Funny thing in the NFL, Teams seem to be able to work out cap issues that they desperately need. Get Carr, go into the preseason and go with 53best players that fit under the cap.

  3. With all the rumors and speculation about QB’s moving around between Las Vegas, Chicago, and New England, I haven’t read anything about Trubisky to New England. So it’s possible Carr goes to Chicago, Brady to Las Vegas, and Trubisky to New England. I actually think that one makes the most sense. Trubisky is a good young QB who would do great in Belichick’s system.

  4. Trade him to the Bears and then go into next season with no starting quarterback..That’s how you obtain greatness right there

  5. Apparently Derek hasn’t seen Nagy’s play calling. Who would want play in his mickey mouse offense.

  6. The Bears are 20-13 with a 1st (division champs) and 3rd place finish with Mack and Trubisky over two years.

The Raiders are 11-21 with last and 3rd place finish the past two years.

The Raiders clearly lost the Mack trade.

The Bears just freed up up 15 million from cutting two players and there is more to come, the cap space myth is irrelevant in the NFL joecorkronto!

  7. Derick Carr didnt learn from last off season drama? He hung around Antonio Brown for too long. While he is better than Trubisky thats not saying much, Trubisky is a bum, they should sign Bortles he at least won with an elite defense. Fraction of the price no drama good dude.

  8. The Raiders would be MUCH better off if Carr stayed and they got a good OC (like Musgrave) and Gruden left. Unfortunately, Son-of-Al and the Gruden groupies still venerate the “coaching legend” so it looks like Gruden will stay (probably with a washed-up Tom Brady) and Carr will be with another team.

I’m not familiar with the Bears’ coaching staff or offensive personnel but if Carr goes there and he gets competent coaching, and has a decent o-line and receiving weapons then there’s a high likelihood that Carr could recapture his 20015/2016 form when he was in the top tier and guided the Raiders to their only playoff appearance (and winning season) in the last 17 years.

  9. Letting Bill Musgrave go after Carr’s MVP-caliber season was one of the biggest blunders made by the Raiders.

  10. I don’t think Carr did anything wrong. If the team is sending Brady expressions of interest why can’t Carr talk about some colleagues playing on other teams? And a close look at Carr’s stats, 70% completion, 100 RAT, reflect a pretty talented QB.

  11. Only an idiot would think it can already be determined which team won the Mack trade. One first round draft pick used from the trade on Josh Jacobs, who nearly won ROY. Another first round pick coming this draft. Lets make that determination in about 3 more years. What exactly have the Bears won with Mack anyway?

  12. Sometimes “just having fun” can go too far. Carr may have sealed his own fate. He was probably on thin ice to begin with.

  13. He’s trolling the media and all their bs about Brady going to Vegas, Derek Carr owns Vegas, Tommy Boy is not welcome

  14. Always thought of Carr as a decent enough guy but not a great armed QB. My two cents is Chucky doesnt care for Carr’s abilities either and may blame him for the lack of success on this team? Fact that rumor is out Chucky is shopping around confirms that for me.
Carr to the Bears? You got one messed up QB now, why two?

  15. “What exactly have the Bears won with Mack anyway?”

The division in 2018, a playoff berth and a 20-13 record since joining the Bears.

The Bears significantly improved since they acquired Mack because defenses have to re-scheme for him specifically.

The Bears with Mack are undefeated against the Lions and my Vikings.

What exactly have the Raiders done with those draft picks?

Gruden is going into the 3rd year of a 10 year guaranteed contract so no, he’s not getting fired by Davis Jr, who is notoriously cheap and would then have to pay Gruden 80 million for not coaching.

So far they Drafted Josh Jacobs, with another first round pick this year.

Maxx Crosby was a 4th round pick who put up better numbers than Mack and only makes 800k per year.

None of those guys are even come close to Mack talent. Even if you add up all the picks together they couldn’t touch Mack. Teams have to completely change their defense to deal with Mack. Mack is a top three defender in the NFL. I didn’t even know who Maxx Crosby was until you mentioned it, that’s how desperate and obsessed you are with justifying losing the best defender in the game. On top of losing Antonio Brown and Amari Cooper too of the best WR in the game. The Raiders are total train wreck, the only team worse are the Lions.

Mack is not a top 3 defender…he disappears far too much to be top 3. He’s the Kurt Cousin’s of the Bears defense. Highly paid…but when the bright lights turn on he’s no where to be found.

I’d take Maxx Crosby of Mack, he’s young, productive, and doesn’t have a cap crippling salary. Also, the Bears traded away so much to even get the guy, all for a pedestrian 8.5 sacks last year.

Josh Jacob if he were on the Bears he would instantly be the Bears best offensive player.

Still stinging about that sweep? Hope so, because there is a third consecutive sweep coming form the undefeated 4-0 against your Lions – Trubisky.

Mack doesn’t disappear he gets triple teamed and Floyd doesn’t do his job.

The Bears are 20-13 (you pathetic Lions are 9-22-1), Division champs one season and have swept your Lions, the Vikings and only struggle with Rodgers in the division. The fact that you have four negative names dedicated to Trubisky reveals how much it bothers you that Mack has changed the Bears defense and is most definitely one of the best defenders in the NFL. Nice try bitter Lions fan.

  23. Vs the Raiders last year they shut Mack down. Helluva player. Needs someone to take some of the heat off. Opposite a Mad Maxx type and he legitimately breaks the sack record. Especially in that division where QBs aren’t very mobile.

    WRONG.

No player gets “triple teamed” .. nice try.

Raider fans watched Mack for years. He’d dominate one game, disappear the next.

Hence the reason we didn’t pay him 25mil a year. Maxx Crosby is a comparable player at a fraction of the price.

    Duh Bears.

That’s all you got? Laughable. Neither team has made their conference championship game or the SB. 20-13, 1st place, last place, etc. means nothing without at least a big game appearance. The fact is neither team has lost or won the trade as of now. At a minimum, we have to wait to judge the teams AFTER all the picks from the trade have been made and those players have a year or two under their belts.

  26. Pass rushers have more than two blockers to deal with all the time, especially a guy like Mack. Depending on the offensive play there can be more than three blockers hitting one guy.

  27. The Raiders are 11-21 since the Mack trade.

The Bears are 20-13 Since the Mack trade.

The Bears are better off. Raider fans are the only fans that can’t get over it. They have been bringing it up since the trade. The game in London was a personal win because they have no class and the majority of their fan base resides in Federal Penitentiaries.

I believe it’s a Bears fan arguing with Lion’s and Raider’s fans. It’s very confusing because the names are ridiculous or seem to be fans of other teams. Either way the only thing laughable is Lions and Raiders fans obsessing over a high value player on the Bears that was formerly on the Raiders. Obviously the goal is to win playoff games and the SB, but Raiders and definitely not Lions fans shouldn’t be running their mouths when they both finished in last place in their divisions with sub .500 records. The Bears are the better team when compared to those dumpster squads, so move on and enjoy your silly draft picks Raiders clown.

    lmao

How embarrassing to still believe Goodell after all of this. My goodness.

  30. Brady should garner $50 MILLION per year simply because he is the GOAT. Why would he accept less than Russell, Ben, Aaron, Jared and Carson? That’s a slap in the face.

  31. Bears won the Mack trade, they’re the second best team in the division. Their defense is still the best in the division and will bounce back contending with my Packers in 2020. Akiem Hicks is the best player on that team and it’s because of Khalil Mack’s presence.

FYI- Raiders also beat the Bears this year! Mack had 3 tackles and 0 sacks. I’m sure you’ll say that was only because he was double teamed. Then who did that leave not guarded? Akim Hicks? Hicks had 2 tackles and 0 sacks that game. You’re welcome!

  33. Whats laughable is Bears fans trying to assure themselves that Ryan Pace didn’t get fleeced by a rookie GM. Plot twist: He did!!

  34. Don’t understand the perceived need to bring in another QB with more “sizzle.” Carr was a top 10 QB last year in both passer rating and QBR. The tickets have already been sold. I don’t know if Gruden just wants “his guy” in there or is in no hurry to win and figures a rental might make the team bad enough to get a shot at Trevor Lawrence.

Not to get technical but $36 MILLION per year would do the same thing……

    Go Hawks!
    Go Dragons!

  36. Even just Josh Jacobs straight up for Mack is a win for the Raiders, never mind the 2nd 1st rounder and the ton of cap space that enabled them to sign the best Tackle in the game.

  37. If the Vikings can still expect a guaranteed SuperBowl payoff (that’s why they went and got him,) from Cousins after two full seasons as their starting quarterback, shouldn’t the Bears at least be patient enough to do the same with Trubisky?

With the Cowboys talk of crazy Dak money, a poor Raider team, and because it’s playing Vegas, yeah, $50 million per year would be about right.

  39. This is a bad look any way you look at it, either your franchise QB wants out because you’ve teased wanting to bring in Tom Brady to replace him or a guy who is supposed to be the face of the Raiders franchise (and has a big contract) has the maturity of a child.

  40. I can understand Carr wanting out. He is tired of losing to the Superbowl Champs twice a year.
Which is the same reason Brady won’t be signing in the AFC West.
