Packers say they haven’t been awarded 2022 draft, yet

The Packers eventually may land the 2022 draft, but they haven’t gotten it yet.

In response to a report that the Packers have been informed that they’ll host the draft in two years, Packers COO and general counsel Ed Policy said, in slightly more diplomatic terms, “Fake news.”

“The NFL has not awarded the 2022 draft to us or anybody else,” Policy said, via the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

The 2020 draft will occur in Las Vegas. Cleveland gets 2021. Kansas City has 2023. The open dates are 2022, 2024, and every year after that through and until the sun burns out or the planet blows up or the NFL otherwise stops operating.

“We are going to aggressively pursue the opportunity, along with other members of our community,” Policy said as to the 2022 draft.

The NFL’s decision to take the draft on the road has made the draft a bigger and bigger event, with each new city trying to one-up the last one. And since the draft happens in the spring, every NFL city can get in on the act.

Since leaving Radio City Music Hall, the draft has been held in Chicago (twice), Philadelphia, Dallas and Nashville.

  1. Hmmm. Vegas with the iconic nightlife or Green Bay, the nations largest producer of dairy products.
A tossup, but I think I will stick with Vegas.

  2. Man for some reason the NFL loves Green Bay. From officiating to the league office. Hey, here’s an idea! Let’s award them the Super Bowl too! Nothing quite like Green Bay, Wisconsin, in the beginning of February, am I right?!

  3. Hosting the draft is perfect for that venue. It’s stupid to even mention having a SuperBowl there.

  4. Las Vegas just makes too much sense for the NFL Draft venue.
They have the lodging, restaurants, infrastructure and other entertainment choices to easily and efficiently handle the crowds. Most people like going to Vegas anyway, so if you can squeeze in an event like the NFL draft it’s Win-Win.
The NFL draft should be held in Vegas at a minimum of every other year.
The big conversation, of course, will be hosting the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. It just makes sense for many of the same reasons. Plus you get a brand new stadium and warm climate.

Great stadium, but is there enough lodging facilities there?

No, there isn’t. Restaurants and general things to do are few and far between. I used to have to go there for work on occasion and it was slim pickens. The area around Lambeau is bizarre, too. Unique, but odd. It’s kind of like how Foxborough is in terms of how odd it is where most stadiums are in a city backdrop.

So I think it has to do with the idea there is no owner so there are not any politics they get themselves into and the idea that the league seems them as a bedrock franchise, which to be fair, they obviously are.

In a nutshell, the Packers get the best of both worlds in that regard.

Look up Titletown District and you’ll see things have changed drastically.

    You’re absolutely right!
You got skiing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, tobogganing, ice skating. Maybe they can add some snowman making contests, and snowball fights. It’s a winter wonderland!
