Darren Sproles: I feel like I’m a Hall of Famer, but it’s not for me to choose

Darren Sproles announced his retirement this offseason, and he’d like to think he’ll be under consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in five years.

Asked by TMZ.com if he sees himself as a Hall of Famer, Sproles said he hopes so.

“I hope so, but I don’t know. I’ve got to wait and see,” Sproles said. “I feel like I am, but it’s not for me to choose.”

Sproles acknowledged that having a bust in Canton is something he’s thought about.

“As a kid that’s what you dream to be. That’s what you work hard to be,” Sproles said.

Sproles owns the NFL’s all-time record for all-purpose yards in a season, with 2,696 in 2011, and he’s fifth in NFL history in all-purpose yards. That may not be enough to get him into the Hall of Fame, but his was a career worthy of saluting.

  1. Another good but not great player.
Then again, it is the hall of good players… especially lately.

  2. He was never even the best RB on his teams. Let alone a HOF’er. Give him some healthy snacks and a participation trophy instead.

  3. These players are delusional. At no point have I ever heard him described as great. It’s sad to see these guys begging to get into the Hall of Fame.

  4. I like Sproles but when an nfl player’s quote starts ” I feel like…” Well I feel like it’s going to a be a chest beating exercise.

  5. I can think of 4 Chiefs RB’s that should go before Sproles. And I don’t think any of the Chiefs players should be in it. They’re all good, but not great.

Okoye, Charles, Holmes, Larry Johnson (yes he’s a loser but still better than Sproles)

Did you actually watch the interview? Guy asks Sproles if he thinks he’ll ever get into the HoF. Sproles’ response seemed pretty reasonable and came off as neither delusional nor begging.

I don’t disagree that he probably doesn’t have a chance at ever getting in, but no reason to tear into the guy for expressing a little confidence in himself.

  7. Are you going to put Brian Mitchell in? Who? Yeah right.

He’s number two in All Purpose yards.

  8. Is there even a team for whom he would make the Ring of Honor? I have to think no on that one, as well.

  9. He only has so many all purpose yards because he was never a good enough RB that his teams didn’t want to risk injury as a Special Teams guy.
