Report: Some General Managers, coaches believe Matthew Stafford wants to be traded

The Scouting Combine is many things other than the Scouting Combine. Among other things, it’s Rumor Central, with reporters in varying degrees of sobriety constantly talking to coaches and executives in varying degrees of sobriety.

Whether and to what extent rumor mongered while elbows are bending ever see the light of day is a different story. Plenty of rumors don’t make it. Some do. Here’s one that did.

Michael Silver of NFL Network, a media company partially owned by the Detroit Lions, reports in reference to the Matthew Stafford trade rumors that “some GMs and coaches around the league believe Stafford is the one who wants the Lions to move him.”

The Lions have strongly and consistently pushed back against the notion of a Stafford trade. G.M. Bob Quinn said this week that he told Stafford he won’t be traded. Coach Matt Patricia has called the rumors “comical.”

So while it may be true that some General Managers and coaches believe that Stafford wants to be traded, what they believe frankly doesn’t mean jack squat. What they know is a much different issue, but there currently is no report that any of them know that Stafford wants out. Until reports like that emerge, this will continue to be a curiosity, at best.

  1. I think he should. I feel like the Lions are wasting him just like they do so many others. I think he would do even better on a another team, he’s already carrying the Lions, he can live up to his talent on a real organization.

  2. One of the more underrated talents In the league. The consistently poor o-line and lack of run game (how many 100 yard rushers in the last how many games) have put him in a poor position and increased his risk of injury (like the back to back double digit sack games in 2018). Can’t imagine how much more celebrated he would be nationally if he played for a team like the Cowboys.

  3. What does this tell you about player’s expectations for next season? Clearly Stafford doesn’t think the Lions will have much of a chance next year. I’m guessing that feeling is prevalent among other players.

They should have already canned Patricia. If it means getting rid of Quinn too, so be it.

  4. With or without Stafford the Lions will continue to lose so why not trade him? He has back problems and is getting towards the end of his career.

  5. Stafford would have had a shot at the HoF on another team. I’d place him above Rivers and below Ben (and not by much). If Stafford played for the Steelers his entire career… that would have been something.

Makes me rethink what Burrow should do…

  6. Stafford was the one that took max money to stay in Detroit so I don’t feel bad for him at all. Stay in Detroit Matt.

  7. I thought trading him would put them in a cap nightmare scenario? With all the chatter there must be something to it but I’m not hearing a work around…

  8. To bad Dak is a free agent, Dallas could trade him and a higher draft pick to the Lions for Stafford and give Stafford a chance of playing in a playoff game before his career ends in the next several years. Lions are just a bad franchise with little hope. Saves Jerry a few bucks and he gets an actual NFL passer.

  9. This guy is something in the neighborhood of 8-54 against playoff caliber teams. Can you imagine Russell Wilson even being under .500 in these same games if he were to have played with the Lions?

  10. Playing for Detroit – a team mired in mediocrity or worse – must be hard. Would not blame any good player from wanting out. Calvin Johnson got sick of it and retired. So did Barry Sanders. How does a team not get any better for 30 years?

  11. Stafford is getting a free pass but his stats are volume stats against prevent defenses. He’s never performed well against playoff teams. Maybe a better team around him would have changed things bur he does deserve a lot of blame

  12. I’ve been watching this franchise for 30 years and it’s the only sports team I obsessively follow.

But I’m also tired of seeing great players’ careers die with this team. If it’s true, I hope he gets his wish and will root for him every Sunday.

  13. Wouldn’t blame him if he did, the Lions have been an absolute mess since they drafted him. 3 HCs (soon enough to be 4), 3 GMs (also soon to be 4), 7 of their last 11 seasons with him have ended up being losing affairs, and they’ve either ran off stars like Suh and Avril elsewhere or caused them to retire early (Megatron). The Fords are terrible owners and should sell the team.

  14. Matthew knows the Lions have been sending love notes to Tom Brady trying to lure him to Detroit. Matthew knows his days as a starter in Detroit are numbered once Brady is signed.
Matthew knows he is not going to be Tom Bradys backup.

  15. For those talking about his contract, I mean yes he did sign a big long term deal, but that doesn’t mean he can’t expect to have some competency around him from the organization. He stayed to help that franchise, but they have just been slacking too long now.

I normally agree with this sentiment, but this Quinn/Patricia experiment has been a failure. It’s not just the win-loss record, but the accounts of ex-Lions (and current Lions, like Slay) that have been alienated by these alpha male, smartest guys in the room. Did you hear Richard Sherman explain why he would never play for those guys and opted for SF for less money? The whole league knows that pair has made for terrible leaders that can’t be trusted.

It’s still just a rumor, but if true, I’m siding with Stafford on this (from a lifelong Lions fan).

  17. What Stafford wants is irrelevant. The dead money is prohibitive. After next year, maybe. He stays

  18. This is hardly breaking news. Of course he wants to be traded. It’s the LIONS! The point is he can’t be traded because of the salary cap hit. Check back next year. By the way, the Lions are crazy if they don’t draft Tua.

  19. With all the money Stafford has robbed the lions of the past ten years only to play ignorant ass to why they don’t win is laughable. Not saying Detroit is an effeciently run organization but he has underachieved in his time there. However, he seems to always get a pass. The guy has been to the playoffs twice and hasn’t won a playoff game. All while banking about 200 million dollars. That’s a great return on investment. Stafford should thank his lucky stars he’s been able to avoid being held accountable for how little he has done as a professional.

  20. “ If it comes out of Michael Silvers mouth it is probably not the truth..”

    Or Nate Silvers.

  21. I sympathize with Matt Stafford.
His career was wasted, and on a better team he may have gone deep in the play off a few times.
    Maybe.

The only thing he can do now is count the money he has earned over his career .. $204,700,000.

Two Hundred million dollars may not be enough to console him, but it’s close.
Throw in a few more years and he’s pushing a quarter of a billion dollars.
    Not too shabby.

  22. It’s not like the Lions are winning anything with him at QB. Don’t forget that he had Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson to throw to and couldn’t win. Stafford is a beautiful loser.

The ONLY way stafford gets into the HoF is to pay admission! Career losing record, record against .500 teams or better is abysmal, no playoff wins, no division titles, NEVER has led the NFL in any QB stat, 1 Pro Bowl and a comeback player of the year. He is Jay Cutler without the winning record, and at least Jay has a couple playoff wins and a Super Bowl appearance!

  24. There’s are a variety of ways to send a message. It might just be a rumor but it makes sense. Stafford was the overall #1 pick. He’s had a great career, but he hasn’t been a winner. I’m sure he is just like everyone else and would love to win. If it’s true that he wants out of Detroit, that means he probably doesn’t agree with the way the Lions are being run. He’s such a great kid and he’d never say anything to disrespect anybody, but winning is awesome, and Stafford is a winner. Who knows, maybe Brady will come play for his old coach. He might be looking for a change of scenery too.

  25. His dead cap money exceeds his cap number on the roster by $10+ million. He is stuck in Detroit until next offseason, when that changes and his cap number exceeds his dead cap by $14 million. He may WANT to get traded, but he is going nowhere in 2020.

  26. This all hinges on Brady, who wants to win out from under Bill’s shadow, doesn’t want to play in the AFC out of respect for Kraft, and trusts Patricia to build a great defense. What better way to cement his legacy as GOAT than to get Detroit a ring?

  27. “They should have already canned Patricia. If it means getting rid of Quinn too, so be it.”

Wouldn’t solve the biggest issue. Fords need to sell the team to someone who can run the Lions like a legit football team and not like their car business.

  28. First some local clown says the Lions are shopping Stafford which Quinn immediately shot down . Patricia did the same at the combine and Quinn went even further saying he called Stafford as soon as he saw the bogus report and Stafford told him he was happy and looking forward to the season . Still you have some idiot with a microphone saying coaches and GMs are telling him Stafford wants to be traded and other lazy reporters repeat the BS without checking into the claim. This reminds me of when all the NFL insiders were reporting there was zero chance Jim Harbaugh would leave the NFL for Michigan . Remember most NFL reporters are shills for agents and teams who feed them info to enhance the opportunities for their clients or teams .

  29. If the Lions don’t go a different direction…..it’s another year of the same ol same ol. Stafford will go down as the greatest Lions QB to have never won squat. Pretty sad when you step back and look at it impartially.

———————————————————————————————-Couple of things wrong with your reasoning . Sherman is an idiot who said he didn’t want to work hard so that’s why he didn’t come to Detroit nothing about trust as you mistakenly claimed . Slay has gone on record many times over the last year that he would love to finish his career in Detroit so once again you’re wrong . The last thing you’re wrong about is the false claim that they are terrible leaders that can’t be trusted . The Lions were one of the most active teams in free agency last year which proves there are many players who are willing to trust the Lions enough to choose them over any other team in the league .

  31. Makes sense to me. Detroit is football player exile. The one way road to oblivion. Detroit deserves better. The players should know better.
