Could Raiders be eyeing Nate Sudfeld in free agency?

Regardless of whether they pursue and/or land Tom Brady, there’s another free-agent quarterback who could be on the radar screen of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Eagles quarterback Nate Sudfeld will hit the market on March 18, unless he signs a new deal to stay put in Philly.

A preseason broken wrist wiped out Sudfeld’s 2019 season, one that saw him enter the year as the primary backup to Carson Wentz. Operating under a restricted free agent tender of $3.095 million, the 2016 sixth-rounder is now eligible to hit the open market.

Although there have been no specific reports or rumors (yet) linking Sudfeld to the Raiders, the evidence is hiding in plain sight. Watch this video from 2018, during which Raiders G.M. (and at the time Eagles preseason analyst) Mike Mayock praised Sudfeld’s performance.

Then there’s the fact that Sudfeld was drafted by Washington, and was coached for more than a year by Jay Gruden, brother of Raiders coach Jon Gruden. In 2017, Jon personally worked with Sudfeld and other members of the Washington roster prior to the launch of the offseason program.

A surprise cut by Washington in September 2016, Sudfeld initially joined the Eagles’ practice squad. He won a Super Bowl ring as the understudy to Nick Foles.

Since Sudfeld will be much cheaper than Brady, the Raiders could (if they fail to get Brady) pair Sudfeld with Derek Carr, maintaining Carr at the top of the depth chart unless and until Sudfeld leapfrogs him. Even if he doesn’t, the mere presence of Sudfeld could push Carr to find a higher ceiling.

While it’s easy for Sudfeld to get overlooked in the deepest class of quarterbacks free agency ever has generated, the connections to Mayock and Gruden provide enough reason to remember a player whose absence for all of 2019 has made him largely forgotten. Even if the Raiders don’t get in on Sudfeld, it makes sense to remember his name, especially after the first wave of more established quarterbacks agrees to terms.

  1. Mayock was paid to say nice things about 400 people a year, if thats all you got then news truly is slow this time of year.

Derek is better than every FA available, yes including Tom Brady (at this point).
Hes better than every Draft prospect, even Burrows.

Write an article about how hes a couple pieces from having one of the best offenses in the NFL rather than speculating people who have never completed a pass in a game are out to take his job.

  2. The Raiders aren’t a 43 year old Tom Brady from competing when you have a defense that can’t stop a nose bleed.

  3. I’d like to see eagles hang onto him

Why? Has he done anything, ever, to warrant a free agent contract to be a backup? There will be other guys with way more experience to fill that role, if the Eagles don’t fill it in the draft.

  4. He’s a nice BACKUP QB, but with all these FA QBs this year and only limited teams needing starting QBs…QBs like Tannahill, Mariota and maybe Winston probably not getting starting gigs, they make way better backup options then Sudfield.

  5. The eagles should have a back up with the idea that he’s 1 play away from playing because when Carson Wentz is the qb, you’re going to start at some point. Probably the playoffs

  6. My guess is that the Raiders go after the CB from Dallas day one …. Not this guy if at all

  7. The eagles should have a back up with the idea that he’s 1 play away from playing because when Carson Wentz is the qb, you’re going to start at some point. Probably the playoffs

I was going to make a comment about Clowney being a cheap shot artist, which he is, but frankly you’re just as good as he is. Apparently playing a full season, being a top 10 QB in almost every passing category except passing completion with the worst WR’s in the league is worthy of trolling. Try harder next time, the Wentz injury narrative is over, unless a goon goes helmet to helmet on him on a totally needless hit.

  8. Sudfeld has been a backup to the backup QB for 4 years since being drafted in the 6yh round. There should be no speculation at all about him winning any starting job or signing a free agent contract.

  9. That’s a great idea 👏👏👍.
Keeps Carr on his regular hot seat since gruden showed up.

  10. Should the Raiders not obtain Brady who IS 6 rings and 50 playoff starts better than Carr. It’s a insult to compare 43 >27 24/7 365. Grab Tannehill or anyone else who isn’t scared.

  11. There’s a backup QB in the NFL that is as talented as anyone and already knows Gruden’s system. His name is DeShone Kizer, and he plays for the Las Vegas Raiders. At Notre Dame he looked like another Andrew Luck. Maybe not as consistent, but Gruden can take a guy like that and make him consistent. I wouldn’t be worried one bit if Carr went down and Kizer had to fill in. Who knows, maybe he’d play well enough to take over the starting job. Stranger things have happened. Sudfeld might compete for the 3rd spot. I’m also wondering if this rumor is going to keep Andy Reid up all night.

Carr already makes 25 mil, pretty sure they aren’t gonna throw 15-20 mil more at one of those back ups. A guy like sudfield that can be had for cheap makes a lot more sense. Those guys make more sense backing up a guy still on a rookie deal, like trubisky, murray, or whoever gets drafted to start this year.

  13. Name me one player that survives a cheap shot coming from a guy that’s basically a 300lb muscle running at full speed & spearing him in the back of the head into the ground. In previous seasons, he held the ball too long and put himself in harms way entirely too much but he was better about that this season as he started 17 games & got knocked outta 1 in a freak injury. It’s a violent game & ish happens
