Bengals could be “heavily involved” in free agency

Joe Burrow said during Super Bowl week he wanted to go to a team “committed to winning Super Bowls.” Some took that as a shot at the team that holds the No. 1 pick.

The Bengals have never won a Super Bowl and have played in only two, the last coming during the 1988 season. Their last playoff win was during the 1990 season.

But the Bengals have a chance to prove they are committed to winning this offseason.

First, they are expected to use the franchise tag on receiver A.J. Green. Burrow addressed Green’s impending free agency at the Combine, saying, “I think with any rookie quarterback, the more help you can get the better, and A.J.’s been one of the best players at his position for a very long time. And, you know if I am lucky enough to get drafted No. 1 overall, I would like to have him on the roster.”

The Bengals, who usually spend more on retaining their own players than bringing in free agents, also can prove their commitment this month.

To that end, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Cincinnati is expected to change the “narrative” by being “heavily involved in the upper and middle class of free agents.”

The Bengals have $44 million in cap space, according to overthecap.com. They will free more space by moving on from quarterback Andy Dalton.

They have plenty of holes, too, which they can fill with a combination of the draft and free agency.

  1. You think? After Dalton, Glenn and Kirkpatrick come off the books this team is gonna have 80 million to spend.

  2. As a Bengals fan I can tell you they say this every year and until we see it you’re just wasting computer memory on this article.

  3. Is Opie going to talk to Andy and Aunt Bee about how in typical Bengal fashion they sign and draft the wrong players? Holes to fill and a lot of cap money is scary for a cheap owner who wants to change the culture. Who is the Bengals head scout? Barney Fife.

  4. Sorry luke8512, the Bengals have never said they will be heavily involved in free agency. Ive been watching them since they started. They need veteran linebackers, its no secret. Im impressed with Taylor. Im gonna give him a chance to spend Mike Browns money, see where it goes. They have top picks throughout, and money. Seen it happen many times last few years.

  5. They almost have to at this point. If you look at the other major pro sports team in the city, the Reds, they spent a huge amount of money in the offseason, which is out of the norm for them, because they’re tired of losing. I think that, given Burrow will be their franchise QB, they HAVE to surround him with a halfway competent offensive line and fix the linebacking corps to have any shot in a very tough division.

  6. I’ll believe it when I see it. Hopefully Burrow gives them the incentive to do something. As far as people saying Cincy has always been a disgrace you’re wrong. Paul Brown was a great owner. Mike Brown is not and just about every franchise has had stretches like this under bad owners. 49ers, Patriots, and Washington to name a few. Even the Steelers under the Rooneys sucked for decades until the 70s and 2000s.

This is correct. As a matter of fact they have constantly said their focus is on retaining their own key free agents and building through the draft. luke8512 is full of it. And for people saying “no way with this owner” I get it, but he truly is in a spot where he absolutely has to make some moves to earn back fans. They are losing fans in droves due to the last couple years and a seemingly lack of urgencv to address it. Drafting Burrow and hopefully a few other good picks and adding two or three key free agents along with extending Mixon, Green and Dennard and cutting ties with Dalton and Glenn at least should create some excitement and better performance which is what matters most. I am cautiously optimistic the Bengals turn this thing around fairly quick.
