With the entire NFL sphere of influence in Indianapolis for the Scouting Combine last week, bits of information begin to circulate about what could happen as free agency approaches in the coming weeks.

When it comes to the New Orleans Saints, they may have a specific target at linebacker already on their radar.

According to Larry Holder of TheAthletic.com, the Saints are expected to have interest in New England Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins when he hits the market in two weeks.

Demario Davis is the only completely sure thing at linebacker for the Saints. A.J. Klein will be a free agent like Collins when the “legal tampering” window opens on March 16. Meanwhile, Kiko Alonso could be a salary cap casualty after starting just four games last season for the team.

Collins is coming off one of the best seasons of his career after returning to New England. He appeared in all 16 games with 15 starts for the Patriots. He record career-highs in sacks with seven and interceptions with three while also forcing three

  1. The Loomis/Payton brain trust are well known for their cap magic. They will restructure some key contracts and take maximum value of the rising cap. Brees understands that the Saints are in transition, but considering he led the league in QBR and pass percentage last year, returning to the field 6 weeks after that thumb injury in Week 2 against the Rams, I don’t think the Saints have any real concerns at QB. Personally, I think they are in perfect position to “take another run” at the Lombardi.

  2. Do they need a linebacker? Can’t the Swiss Army knife of players play that position for them?

  3. Be careful with Collins. I watched his act in Cleveland and when he isn’t motivated, he isn’t moving. He has a knack of looking good when it doesn’t count. Somehow, Bill B got him moving but we never could.

    ********

He did the same thing in NE which is what got him shipped to the Browns in the first place. He freelanced and did his own thing on defense leaving gaping holes that cost them games. He was focused this year because it was effectively a contract year. It remains to be seen if he has truly changed.
