The Tom Brady to San Francisco possibility keeps gathering steam

Four weeks ago tomorrow, I threw out a “what if?” scenario involving Tom Brady and the 49ers. Setting aside the question of whether the 49ers have interest in Brady, what happens if Brady has interest in them?

It’s an intriguing discussion, given that Brady has won six Super Bowls and that his former understudy, underutilized for much of the postseason after throwing an interception and two other potential picks against the Vikings, had Emmanuel Sanders wide open for a potential touchdown late in Super Bowl LIV and missed him. But with no real steam linking the two, and with the 49ers saying all the right things about Jimmy Garoppolo, I forgot about it.

Then came more recent developments, with Deion Sanders talking about Brady to San Fran on Sunday and Peter King writing about it on Monday and Simms and me kicking it around on Monday and Tom Curran giving real credence to the 49ers as an alternative to what otherwise seems to be a Patriots or Titans proposition for Brady. Next comes Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, who reports in response to Curran’s Tuesday comments that he “might be onto something.”

And that really would be something.

We’ll know something more about it within the next two weeks. On March 18, free agency begins. Before then, Brady either will or won’t re-sign with the Patriots. If he doesn’t, there’s a chance Brady could indeed be going home to the Bay Area. Which would definitely constitute chaos — and which would be one of the biggest stories the NFL has ever seen.

  1. Jimmy G. bounced out of New England.
Looks like Brady could have him Garoppoloed out of San Fran, too.

    Stay classy.

  2. Seems like a likely spot that Tom would like to go….they have a stacked roster and he could very likely earn another ring.

  3. I would laugh so hard if he went to the 9ers and wound up losing the super bowl to the Patriots

  4. Don’t see how they can afford it? They would have to cut Jimmy to avoid a 17 million cap hit and thy are already short cap room? At best they could do this for 1 season, then they have too many young players to resign. It’s not like Brady is going to take less than Jimmy’s getting now. This would be dumb on Lynch’s part. Throw away a 28 year old for 1 year of Brady with good players around him.

  5. They’d need a trading partner for Garopollo and his salary.
Brady for two years – then what?

  6. I’m sorry but Favre to the Vikings was bigger, I don’t know who one the Patriots biggest rivalary is. Miami? Pittsburgh? Indianapolis from a decade ago maybe?

  7. 9ers don’t have cap room. Especially with other players they need to sign.

  8. Assuming Brady is only going to play two more years, I can’t understand why the 49ers would want to do this deal. Garoppolo took them to the Super Bowl and he looked better than Brady did in Brady’s first Super Bowl. What’s the plan post-Brady?

I can imagine Brady being psyched to play for his childhood favorite team for the last couple of years of his career. I can imagine Bill Belichick welcoming Garoppolo back. I just can’t get myself to believe the 49ers would pull the trigger.

  9. “JIMMY G” is mediocre. Worst QB in the division. Brady has looked mediocre as well for the last two years. Does not bode well for Niners’ chances next year.

  10. No, it isn’t. Notice that no one can cite any actual 49ers sources. That’s because they’ve already explicitly committed to Garoppolo. Biggest non-story of the off season.

  11. They both share the same agent. Don Yee may be the puppet master in all this. Let’s face it, if Brady was SF’s QB, they would have won that SB.

Lynch might want to pull what his buddy Elway did, they have a team that’s ready to win and they will mortgage it to get Brady

Well, that could happen. The thing is, NE would be a better built team because if the pattern holds, NE will be healthy in 2020, since it’s an odd year. If you play the odds, NE is 13-3 last year, avoiding a loss to Miami for example, IF they were simply healthy.

They’ve never won a SB when they’ve had significant, hey people down, other than 2003 when Law was hurt and a handful of other key players. That was the only time they won it when unlucky in that dept.

Translation? Even if BB moved on from Brady here, he’d have a QB in JimmyG and then he’d have more cap space to add in more FAs or trade for players he can trade for.

John Lynch is not as great of a GM as he thinks he is. SFs RBs for example were not really near the talent level and depth of what Brady had to work with, which were RBs that helped significantl win a SB JUST LAST YEAR.

NE ain’t going anywhere. They’ll win the division next year even without Brady.

  13. Patriots have had it too good with Tom on the cheap. Now they are going to have to pay someone, and I doubt they will take on Jimmy G’s salary.

  14. If Kraft really did force Belichick to trade Garoppolo, and Belichick let it be known that Garoppolo was his preferred QB, the ultra competitive Brady may want to prove he is the better QB.

  15. While I can’t stand Jed York and John Lynch is nothing but a yes man, ever since Kyle Shanahan came on board, they are just smarter than EVERYBODY (except maybe New England). No team before this would have EVER had the cojones to go after a new QB right after going to the Super Bowl with their PAID franchise QB.

A dumpster fire QB evaluator organization like the Chicago Bears would NEVER be so bold when money is involved. Sure they’ll trade all their draft picks to move up ONE spot to take a kid who started 13 collegiate games, but SPLURGE on a new QB after just getting to the Super Bowl with the one you already splurged on? NEVER.

Go get em, San Fran! And they’ll win a Super Bowl while the Bears are sitting on their sofa’s every January.

  16. Originally thought this was nuts but… He grew up a 9ers fan, a talented roster and a good coach, wife would want CA and maybe a better chance at a ring than the Pats. Hmmmm….

  17. yea, because the 49er’s would have won the SB if it weren’t for Garopollo…..and the Chiefs. Take those 2 things away..

  18. I have not seen one media outlet highlight the idea that Tom Brady’s future is really about the brand of TB12 – With his next move, it would be critical for Brady to think about the extension of this brand. If it was about winning championships, then he’d sign an extremely team friendly team with the Patriots and let Belicheck do his thing, 9 trips to the super bowl in 20 years, can’t beat that success ratio. But its not about the ring and its not about a big contract for Brady – its about extending his business, his image – which if done right will be worth much more then his one year contract.

For me, it makes sense to take himself west to Las Vegas or to California – I can already see the TB12 institution in the Bay Area. The Northern California market would eat that up.

  19. If the Niners do this, they will deserve whatever happens to them. Brady is on the way out, and Jimmy G is still on the way up. If SF is foolish enough to dump Jimmy and sign Cheatin’ Tom, then Lynch and Shanahan aren’t nearly as smart as I thought they were.

  20. I’m sorry but Favre to the Vikings was bigger

    —————–

That’s like Sherman to the niners…goes to a hated division rival so he can try to beat his old team.

A bit easier to actually do when you are the QB.

  21. If Mahomes hadn’t recovered that fumble which bounced nicely back in front of him and not roll to a 49er, the SB result is prob different and all the media would since and forever more be endlessly of Belichick wrongly trading JimmyG (of course overlooking Brady’s last win).

  22. Maybe they’ll trade Edelman for Jimmie, too, cuz Bill likes to move on a year early rather than late

  23. This is laughable. Brady is not going anywhere. He just is a drama queen and wants this attention. 100% sure he stays in NE

  24. Why in the Hell would the Niners want to do this?? They were a couple bad calls away from a SB win with Garoppolo. You give up on him for a 42 year old?? For Bay Area sports fans sake, I hope they are smarter.

  25. My prediction is Brady will re-sign with the Patriots for a year with a second year option where he’ll either play for them in some capacity or retire. Unless he really thinks SF is going to win it all next year without much doubt, it would be better for his legacy to say he played for one franchise IMHO.

  26. Brady goes to the 49ers at the Veterans minimum for a year or two, then retires.

  27. Garoppolo took them to the Super Bowl and he looked better than Brady did in Brady’s first Super Bowl. What’s the plan post-Brady?
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________

Ahh, no he didn’t. While Brady was definitely more of a game manager in his first SB, he did what needed to be done in that last drive. Jimmy G failed to do so when given the opportunity. Jimmy also threw two costly INTs. Brady definitely played better in his first SB then Jimmy G did

  28. Why would the 49ers want to tarnish their organization behind a washed up qb. Beware niner fans.

  29. If this happens, Brady will rue the day he left the powder-puff division. The NFC West will be no picnic…..

BB won’t want that. Brady would need to work around a 20 mil number (preferably less) if he’s serious about adding more weapons, which he ironically should have thought about last year on numerous fronts. in 2018 he made 18 mil, last year he made 24 mil.

His cap hit on the team or not is 13 mil this season. So, any deal for Brady really needs to be a 2 year deal, so when BB does walk or Brady retires, they’re not carrying a bunch of dead money like some of these moronic teams that do because they don
t understand the cap very well.

Charlie Weis also didn’t ignore the run game in the 4th qtr vs the Rams and Brady got a TD from his own D.

    Playcalling is vital.

  32. Didn’t he used to go to 49ers games with his father at the old Candlestick Park? In the words of Bon Jovi ‘Who says you can’t go home”? If he gets signed then Jimmy GQ is gone. They cannot pay him all that money to carry a clip board.

  33. Jimmy G isn’t Goff. He wasn’t bad in the Super Bowl, he just isn’t Mahomes.
Giving up on Jimmy G after one year is crazy! Especially for a guy that only has a couple of good years in him.

  34. Ok, so a bunch of talking heads have been talking about “what ifs” – is there any actual evidence that this might happen?

  35. the only thing picking up steam is the wild ideas of a landing spot for Tom……

jimmy G’s salary alone …would kill the Patriots

True, Mahomes had more fumbles in the SB than Garoppolo. The best player on the Chiefs in that SB was Chris Jones, who they don’t want to pay.

  37. I have no clue if Brady to 49’ers is viable or not.

What i do know is that Brady is still under contract-so no team is supposed to openly talk about signing him.

Therefore rumors that keep popping up could not be corroborated by any team openly.

Lack of team corroboration of it should not be not be used to say it won’t happen.

  38. The Niners can trade Jimmy G and only get nailed for $4.2 mil of accelerated dead money.
And he’s under contract for 3 more years averaging $20 mil/yr.
I’m sure there’s a team out there that likes Jimmy and his contract.

  39. First off JG got the 49ers to the SB in his first full season as a QB. That is what they paid for! The coaches lost the game.

Second, the PATS are not stupid enough to take over the ridiculous contract that the 49ers gave JG. $138 million. No way the PATS take that.

Read my earlier post. You’re way off base with those numbers. His contract salary avgs a little over $20 mil for the next 3 years. That’s a bargain.

  41. The real thing is who cares? He will do like Manning did. Find a team that is close, win another super bowl and go away. He knows NE isn’t that close and SF is. He won’t be around much longer after he gets another ring.

Pats won the Atlanta SB without Gronk and they came close in the Eagles SB without Edelman or Hightower.

Chris Jones is great but damn that’s a bad take on your part. Every cornerstone of the last 5 super bowl winners were led to the win with their defensive tackle.

W/o pat the chiefs would be average

  44. I’d take the SB chances with Brady for 1 year on that stacked team vs Jimmy G for another 10. Jimmy landed in a great spot, with the perfect chance to win that SB and he blew it in clutch time. He is not going to get another better opportunity on a team like that. Jimmy G is not their guy and the SB proves it.

Brady on the Niners probably wins the SB. Jimmy G in that same Pats offense barely makes the playoffs.

  45. Let’s see…signing a 40-something QB to a big money contract. Might work one year. Of course we know older players don’t get hurt(snicker). Then what do you do with JG? Will he sit–gladly– behind Brady again? Probably not.
So Brady gets hurt, JG probably leaves and the big shots suddenly have nobody at QB. Maybe that would be just.
Folks think Brady is 28 years old. Father Time catches up with all of us, Tom Brady, too.

  46. Brady and Belichick will laugh at anyone who doubts their greatness. On to 2020 and ocmpeting for a seventh title.

Jimmy G was going to be a free agent the following year. Are you proposing that should not have traded him and then lost in him in free agency has Brady stayed?

  48. daddeeoo

The coaches didn’t over throw the wide open receiver in the 4th quarter. They called the play that got him open.Nonsense the coaches lost that game. Jimmy threw a pick in every playoff game he played in.
