Matthew Slater, the son of Hall of Famer Jackie Slater, has been a member of the Patriots since 2008. That relationship will continue into 2020.

According to ESPN.com, Slater has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with the Patriots. The deal reportedly is similar to Slater’s prior contract, which averaged $2.6 million per year.

Officially a receiver, Slater has been primarily a fixture on special teams for the Patriots. He last caught a pass in 2011.

Via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Slater has led the Patriots in special-teams tackles for eight of his 12 NFL seasons.

  1. Does the Hall of fame have spots for special-teamers? He is a lock for first ballot and is there a father-son combo in the HoF yet?

  2. Wait I thought they all hated BB? Pats’ve been Whickersham-imploding for a few years now. Anyway, his last catch was 2011 but last rush was in 2016 (5yds for a 1st-down), and he still sometimes lines up on offense & defense due to team injuries, or trick plays. A mini-goat ST.

  3. Given the nature of the news (sports related or otherwise) lately, this headline made me smile. Belichick, perhaps more than any other coach/gm values special teams, and while they’ve had some great ones over the years, Slater is at the top of the list. He’s an easy guy to root for and if he plays out this contract it will be 14 seasons with one team as a special teamer– that’s amazing and says something about the type of person and player he is.

WELL SAID (sorry about skipping the middle) But think about this:

You’re the SON of a HOF’r. You’re expectations are sky high. Saving grace, is Pops was a big dude and Jr can hide in the huddle. Different expectations but still…

Basically failed as a WR (he was drafted to really be one) AND AND AND ….eat crow and CONTRIBUTE in the least thankful job in football. The back-up QB gets paid twice as much and only get a grass stain or two per year.

Imagine the son of pick a legend and to excel ON THE BUBBLE part of the roster for this long is AMAZING for anyone LET ALONE the son of a legend. He had to dog deep and he certainly found gold because he defines it.

Not a Pats fan but I love guys like this and have always rooted for him. I’d be one proud dad. Kudos to him and his family.

  5. Legendary family
    Incredible Special Teams player
The worlds greatest heads or tails caller.
