New NFL stadiums could miss deadlines, based on COVID-19 measures

The two NFL stadiums due to open later this year, in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, remain on track. With the world quickly coming off track, the stadium plans could change.

If/when the U.S. government (or the California or Nevada governments) impose sweeping restrictions like those in Italy and Spain, progress on both venues likely would slam to a halt.

It’s a simple proposition. If citizens are prohibited from leaving home only to go to the store, the pharmacy, or to get gasoline, they won’t be allowed to leave home for work. And of all the jobs that now can be done at home, working on a stadium cannot be.

So unless housing will be constructed at the stadium site for all stadium workers, there will be no way for the stadium workers to work on these stadiums. Which could keep the Raiders in Oakland, the Rams in the Coliseum, and the Chargers in a 30,000-seat soccer stadium for another year.

  1. Only time will tell. Last week, we could not imagine this week being what it is. It won’t be the end of the world if a stadium isn’t built on time. I do know this…the players will be home getting high, enjoying their new CBA/Cannabis regulations.

  2. You have to wonder how long that virus can last in the heat of LA and more so, Vegas.

  3. I don’t know why people think that the heat of summer is going to kill the virus. If anything, heat will probably nurture the damned thing.

  4. Ridiculous. Stadium workers are not in a closed environment. They’re outside! They work individually operating equipment or at worst small groups of two or three all around the stadiums. They’re outside in the open air! They drive home after work.

  5. The whole thing is ridiculous, it’s a Griffin virus it will pass just like the H1N1 did which killed so !any more people and everyone wasn’t running around screaming the world is ending! Snowflakes everywhere, make that unprepared snowflakes. BTW check the numbers for how many people die from the flu and didn’t get a very available shot but this is an issue roflmao!!!

  6. We are a Not like Italy, we are a Republic so I don’t think ordering people not to leave their homes is going to fly…..

Yea maybe the very beginning stages of construction or the guys working on the exterior. There’s plenty of drywallers, painters, electricians, guys bringing in cabinets and any other type of construction that goes on inside a building, that will be working indoors everyday. I dont know why you would think construction work is strictly outdoors. Someone has to build the inside of the building, right?

  8. “You have to wonder how long that virus can last in the heat of LA and more so, Vegas.”

There is not any reason to assume warmer weather makes anybody to this virus, or that it is “seasonal.” Many viruses thrive in warm like, like the MERS coronavirus (Middle East).

  9. I don’t understand the point of this article. No one has been prohibited from leaving their homes and going to work on construction sites. Even when the construction moves to the indoor parts of the stadiums, the workers won’t be congregating or standing around like we’ve seen people in airports or in lines at the stores. There won’t be groups of hundreds of people in closed quarters. Once again, I don’t understand the point of a fear-mongering article such as this.

  10. Ok this is now getting ridiculous. So now, people who work outside or in large indoor areas cant work? Someone is trying to send this country into a recession.

  11. Las Vegas said yesterday that it won’t affect it, and it will be done on time!

  12. Of course, no construction worker in the history of construction has ever coughed, sneezed, or spit while on the job. And if that WERE to suddenly happen, that worker, and a complete HAZMAT crew would immediately would clean the bejeebus out of the spot where it happened.

The virus has been shown to live up to 3 days on hard surfaces – like counter tops, door knobs, etc. How many of those in a stadium?

  13. I doubt it. Construction sites dont have the people concentration of other public spaces. Yes there are a lot of workers but the sites are immense. And the project managers can always spread the shifts and reduce certain staffings.

  14. Of course like every work place hygien measures will be emplemented/reinforced. They will probably adjust meal time and place to avoid people concentration, stuff like that. But we are really far from a general work stoppage in Nevada and California.

  15. Finishing a stadium on time is the least of anybody’s concerns. There are plenty of football stadiums around. People make too big of a deal over stadiums. The 49ers won 5 super bowls while playing at Candlestick Park. Ever seen that place? Hideous!

  16. Moving to play in another stadium is easy if required and had been done many times in the past. Nothing to worry about.
