The Giants are making a “strong push” to sign linebacker Blake Martinez, Matt Lombardo of NJ.com reports.

The Packers’ signing of Christian Kirksey signaled an end to Martinez’ time in Green Bay.

Martinez, 26, led all linebackers with 114 solo tackles last season.

The Packers made Martinez a fourth-round choice in 2016, and he played his first four seasons there. He saw action in 61 games, with 57 starts.

Martinez started all 48 games over the past three seasons.

He has 512 career tackles, 10 sacks, 17 pass breakups and three interceptions.

  1. Blake is a warrior. A tackling machine. I wish we could keep Blake,…. but we need more speed in the middle. He just can’t run with a speedy Tight End or Running Back.

He’s a better fit for a 4 – 3 defense. He would be your Middle Linebacker.
Best of luck to Martinez and his wife. Great people. Great character.

  2. Well well, good to see that Giants will continue their annual tradition of seeking and overpaying for LBs. Carry on.

  3. Martinez seems like a nice guy, but the tackles stat is misleading. It doesn’t mean much if all of those tackles are 4-5 yards upfield.

  4. He won’t be worth the deal he signs. Poor in pass coverage and struggles to shed blocks.

  5. Martinez is worth every nickel the Packers won’t pay him…….. in the right defense, which is not Green Bays’, He will continue to excel somewhere. He’s one of the best. He just doesn’t fit what the Packers are trying to do on their defense, so it’s OK for both. I wish the best of luck and success to Martinez and the Green Bay Packers.

  6. Well if you look at those solo tackles, many came in front of the LOS. That is true. What is also true, is that without him, who knows how many yards opposing running backs would’ve had this season. He’s a good player. Just always seems out of position in coverage.

  7. I hope this guy does well for himself. The Pack’s DC Pettine’s scheme wants dlinemen that occupy blockers – not run stffers…so the LB can plug the run. Unfortunately, the Pack doesn’t have that type of dline and has OLB’s more interested in sacks than containment.

One guy here said Martinez can’t shed blocks. The blocks that the big dline is supposed to be occupying.

You get my drift. Too many Packets fans are enthralled with Pettine’s middling defense. I’m not one of them.

Martinez will be a strong presence in a gadget defense. Best of luck to him.

  8. Probably will take less than market value to get out of Green Bay…

It was your guy that was desperate to get out of town, not ours.
