Report: Raiders were “sniffing around” Tom Brady “as late as this week”

Getty Images

The finalists for Tom Brady‘s services were the Chargers and the Buccaneers. Hovering on the fringes were the Raiders.

As the dust settles on Brady’s destination, Vic Tafur of TheAthletic.com explains that the Raiders weren’t completely out of the running as Brady closed in on selecting a new home.

Writes Tafur, “The Raiders were indeed sniffing around Brady as late as this week, according to league sources, and while it is true they never made him an offer, some ballpark numbers were made known to him at some point.”

But Tafur points out that fit and finances became the issue, with the Raiders never making it into the category of “serious finalist” and with the Raiders unwilling to commit $50 million guaranteed for 2020 and 2021 because “the game film the last two years just didn’t warrant that in the Raiders’ minds.” (That’s a diplomatic way of saying that Father Time is gaining ground.)

Tafur adds that, if the Raiders had been a “serious finalist” for Brady, they would have begun shopping quarterback Derek Carr. Tafur says, as to Carr, that “even his critics should agree” that he’s a top-16 quarterback.

That’s much easier to say without listing the top 16 quarterbacks. In no particular order, here are 16 quarterbacks who are currently better than Carr: Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Dak Prescott, Kirk Cousins, Ryan Tannehill, Jimmy Garoppolo, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Josh Allen, Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Kyler Murray. And here are four more, to make it an even 20: Philip Rivers, Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, Cam Newton. And here are five more I’d consider taking for now and for the future before Carr: Drew Lock, Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, Baker Mayfield, Gardner Minshew. And here are five others I’d seriously consider before taking Carr: Teddy Bridgewater, Nick Foles, Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Alex Smith.

Other than that, Carr is a top-16 talent.

“There shouldn’t be any real fallout” from the flirtation with Brady, Tafur explains. For an ordinary quarterback, that would be true. But Carr has wafer-thin skin. He was griping about the public speculation regarding the Raiders possibly adding Brady and dumping Carr, and he surely kept better notes than Ryan Howard regarding anyone in the organization who said anything about playing with Brady (including but not necessarily limited to tackle Trent Brown, running back Josh Jacobs, and receiver Tyrell Williams).

For now, the Raiders have added Marcus Mariota, who will have a chance to do to Carr what Ryan Tannehill did to Mariota. Carr surely will be prickly about that, and he’ll either respond by getting better or inevitably Mariota will play and Carr will end up planting a “for sale” sign on the lawn of the house next door to coach Jon Gruden’s.

  1. God, Florio has a serious hatred with Carr, as his previous columns have suggested. Give it a friggin rest

  2. Yeah, we heard that no one wanted Brady. Other than the bunch of teams that did.

He’d be an upgrade on most of the teams in the league right now, even at 43.

  3. The only thing the Raiders are sniffing is another fourth place finish in that tough division. They have done nothing to improve their team in FA. Mayock is clueless, take it from a Detroit fan – the Raiders Stink! We know what a losing team looks like in Detroit and no one knows better!

  4. The story is not true Peter King said Jon gruden told Tom Brady around the time of the combine they wouldn’t be going after him!

  6. Life long raider fan here. Yup carr is not good. He plays scared and would rather throw it away on 4th and goal then take a risk, when he does take risks he fumbles on the goal line..he misses the deep options every time because hes so scared of being sacked hed rather check down for loss then hold it for more than 2 seconds. His stats of 70 percent completion are because he doesnt throw beyond 10 yards from line of scrimmage. His 3 to 1 td to int rate is because he refuses to throw the ball when a receiver doesnt have 5 yards separation. Without Jacobs and waller this last year would have been real bad. watch the tape it’s not the wrs its carr who can’t play.

  7. Dunno what the detroit kid is talking about ^

Raiders almost had a perfect FA period if they came away with Trufant or Slay. A legit #1 Corner is still the biggest need on defense. They revamped the LB room and still kept Morrow and Lee who show potential but havent made the next step yet. Unfortunately they let Joseph walk but they got some solid guys to back up Abrams and Joyner plus even though im not a huge fan of him Erik Harris had a solid year.

Apparently Dunbar for the Skins is available for a cheap price maybe if we throw a 3rd or 4th round pick at them we can have a solid #1 Corner to build around. The young CBs got better as the season went on to be fair.

And we got 5 picks in the first 3 rounds of the drafts, Raiders can only go up from here..hopefully.

Yeah, you’re right, we haven’t done anything besides land arguably the best free agent LB (not to mention one of the best coverage LBs in the league), who instantly upgrades our LB corps, and another potential starter in Kwiatkoski. And that’s not even counting Nassib, Collins, etc. for depth. Stick to trolling the Lions.

  9. Can we stop talking about this please? Brady is with Tampa now and Carr will be the Raiders’s starting QB in 2020, get over it.

  10. What if Mariota does what Tannehil did to him and takes over playing lights out. Hey, it’s been a crazy year already so anything is possible…

  11. Who cares about if they were sniffing around how is that even news. They didn’t submit an offer. You could do this on every single player in free agency. I’m sure most teams “sniff” around on most players available. How are you even doing your job in the NFL if your don’t discussing most or all free agents.

  12. ” Tafur says, as to Carr, that “even his critics should agree” that he’s a top-16 quarterback.”

    ================

Carr is not a QB who can lift a team on his shoulders on his own but he’s certainly not a bad QB either.

Basically Carr is as good (or bad) as the coaching he receives and the weapons he has. He excelled under Bill Musgrave in 2015-2016 and in fact was in the MVP discussion in 2016. His play however has declined under inferior offensive coaching with Todd Downing and now Gruden. If in the future Carr gets good coaching again then he could be a top 5 QB.

  13. I agree that this is a tweak to Raider fans. I am not a fan, but not a hater either. Carr is definitely not top 10. At this point, he is what he is. Definitely not bottom 10 either. He’s somewhere in the middle 10, where you could argue either way. I agree with top 16. Raiders had another good offseason. If they have a draft anywhere close to last year, they’re on a nice path to playoff contention. Good for them, and the NFL.

Florio admitted Carr blocked him on social media.

  15. We’re doomed, the FA pickups so far have been desperate moves due to little to nothing out there. Now we have to gamble on the draft again.

  16. Hilarious to watch the desperation in the Raiders organization. Got to love the passion from Gruden, but he’s past his prime for this NFL. Bringing in Mayock is the most comical hiring probably in the past decade.

No one is scared of the over-Raiders around the league (fyi – their fans only overate them, no one else.) They have 11 wins in two seasons, make that 16 wins after next season if they’re lucky.

  17. Florio is just reporting what people are saying.

With no knowledge of the actual discussions it’s meaningless. I’m sure the Saints at one point called. They might have been calculating how much to resign Brees for. With Brady a FA, and his history of taking team friendly deals, he’s a disruptor for everyone.

  18. Desperation moves?? Littleton, Kwiatoski and MCollins were home runs at positions of need. I think Agholor and Mariota were good signs too, although you could argue those. I think all the losing has softened some brains.

  19. What do you have against Carr? And why do you keep insisting he gets his feelings hurt easily? Have you ever considered Gruden might be the problem? You repeatedly criticized Mike McCarthy for not changing his offense/for not being innovative but I don’t see you giving Gruden the same degree of criticism.

  20. What’s comical is the paranoia of Raiders fan these days.
The NFL hates us. The commissioner hates us. The referees hate us. The media, led by Mike Florio, hates us. We get cheated out of everything by everybody.
The Raiders haven’t won a Super Bowl in 36 years, and were utterly embarrassed in the only one they played in over that span. Yet it’s not management’s fault, or ownership’s fault, or the coaches’ or players’ fault. No, it’s the media and anyone who has ever had any connection to the “evil, vindictive” NFL.
Laughable, if not a little pathetic.

Very few teams did want Brady. That still stands. And if you think Gruden proves your point, he thought Johnny Manziel would be a star. May work for you but doesn’t work for most of the rest of the thinking world.

The game film from the last 2 years? Does that include winning the SuperBowl? LOL

He didn’t win the SB. In fact I am not sure either team tried. Remember I think same year Pats offered him an incentive laden contract and he didn’t hit any. So you may not be able to see it through love goggles but others do. He isn’t very good these days.

    (Still better than Carr though)

  25. Just shows how fickle so many are. If you are going to do an exercise of who I would take over Carr you have to remember where some of these guys where just one year ago in the career as well.

Lamar Jackson: Lets re-visit him in a year. Love watching him play but when made a passer he look less than average and you will be a passer in this league eventually.

Ryan Tannehill: Where was this guy just a year ago?

Jimmy Garoppolo: Maybe, maybe not. One good complete year that fizzled in a title game. Time and circumstance will tell.

Josh Allen: Did you watch that playoff game? Jury is out on this guy for sure. Give me Carr if I have a good roster.

Jared Goff: You will be doing this same article on him next year.

Taysom Hill: No, just no. Hasn’t ever complete more than 1 pass in a game and is older.

Alex Smith: Got to walk before you can run.

  26. What ever happened to all those players rumored to want to join Tampa Bay Tommy? Sounds like the same source that talked about all those teams interested in signing him. 🤔

  27. Carr is a bottom 10 QB. There is no debating that. The Raiders are not so secretly looking for an upgrade.

  28. Indianapolis will be 13-3 and win the AFC. Rivers vs Brees Superbowl. Both former Chargers with everything on the line. It will be epic.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzz

……he does the same thing with Rodgers. He’s a Viking fan.

  30. Where are all the FAs wanting to sign with Tampa? It’s been 2 days since Brady signed and the Bucs haven’t signed 1 yet. Unbelievable.

  31. Josh Allen: Did you watch that playoff game? Jury is out on this guy for sure. Give me Carr if I have a good roster.

Sorry but josh Allen finds ways to win… and sometimes lose. He’s not at his peak yet and has some growing to do but I can’t ever imagine Carr picking you a fumble and driving through 3-4 guys for a first down like Allen did on thanksgiving. His stats are not as sexy as Carr’s but he’s far and a way a better player.

  32. I really hope the Raiders take over that division and do something. I love Gruden and always have, he’s just an all around likeable football guy.

2018 was great in Chicago, but vanished as quick as it came. This Bears fan is rooting for the Las Vegas Raiders (excluding when we are opponents of course.) At least have the Khalil Mack saga change something for the better for a team he was connected to.

Everyone stay healthy out there and let’s get through this so we can have an NFL season!

LOL…. did you watch the game? He had the 49ers up by 10 entering the 4th. The 49ers defense then gave up 21 points…. No, Jimmy G didn’t play his best game, but if anyone”Fizzled” it was the defense..

After taking the top linebacker in free agency and getting a Hall of Fame tight end and Jason Witten even though they didn’t need them they also added Malik Collins from the Cowboys who has a serious way of rushing the passer besides another starting 3 down linebacker as well as a cornerback and a safety you obviously have no idea what you’re talking about and are special kind of ignorant

  36. Do any of you remember his brother David Carr’s career ?
It looked like he was going to be a decent starting QB with the fledgling Texans team. Had some good stats, but sacked a gazillion times. The kid was beat to a pulp,… and then he ends up in Carolina. He was scared to take the hits and threw a ton of picks. He became a career back up for a few other teams.
Sound Similar ? Looks like a repeat.

Umm, he led the team to 13 points. The D allowed 3.

Brady was generally mediocre or awful
for almost all of 2018 until very late in the year.

Yes, both the 2018 tape and 2019.

  38. Carr’s in a tough spot. With Mahomes in the division and the team moving to a new city, he’ll be judged by a different standard – “good enough” won’t be good enough.

Carr’s upside is a lot higher than many QBs, but I expect the team will want to make a splash. Right now Carr has two big things in his favor: 1) No sure things on the free agent market, and 2) a reduced, or even eliminated, training period & preseason will make it harder for teams to justify changing things up too much.

It will likely mean he gets one last window where he can solidify his starting role. But he’s going to have to come out blazing, whenever the season starts.

  39. I’d put Carr in the top 10. There are only 2 quarterbacks’s in the history of the NFL who began the first six years of their career with over 300 completions and over 3,000 yards passing every season. One is Peyton Manning. The other is Derek Carr. Carr needs consistency with coaching and wide receivers who can get open down field and can catch the ball.

He missed wide open throws and couldn’t close the deal. He is on a team that is stacked on defense. That won’t be the case forever and what happens when the team relies on him to win?

  41. “LOL…. did you watch the game? He had the 49ers up by 10 entering the 4th.”
    ______________

The D and running game had them up 10. Jimmy G looked pedestrian at best and the lead disappeared when they started passing more and abandoned the run game.
