Eagles feel J.J. Arcega-Whiteside “needs to take a big jump”

The wide receiver position was a big topic of conversation during Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman’s conference call last week.

He touched on why the team didn’t make a trade for DeAndre Hopkins and said that Alshon Jeffery needs to get healthy after Lisfranc surgery, while adding that his view of the group is “maybe different than it’s publicly viewed.”

That view isn’t a particularly postive one. The health of Jeffery and DeSean Jackson is part of that and so was the play of 2019 second-round pick J.J. Arcega-Whiteside in his rookie season. While Roseman may generally have a more positive view, he didn’t sound so different when it came to that last point.

Arcega-Whiteside had 10 catches for 169 yards and a touchdown last year and Roseman said he “needs to take a big jump” during his second season. Nelson Agholor’s departure provides an opening for that leap, although the draft could bring competition that the team finds more appealing once it is time to get on the field.

  1. Arcega-Whiteside making almost zero impact as a rookie was a surprise.

He’s in danger of becoming Laquon Treadwell… someone who’s skills don’t transfer to the NFL.

  2. JJ definitely needs to step up. He DID look decent vs Dallas in week 16 with a couple big catches. Hopefully he can build on that. They need some speed though. It’ll be nice to have DeSean back but you can’t rely on him. Gotta have a youngster in there as well. With the eagles having the best TE duo in the game, they don’t necessarily need a bunch of wrs, but they WILL need more speed on the outside.

  3. Get him on the field and throw him the ball. If the ball is anywhere in the vicinity, he’ll come down with it. The guy is an absolute stud. There isn’t much a WR can do if they don’t throw him the ball. If the Eagles don’t want him, he’ll have a pro bowl career somewhere else. I’m sure Tampa Bay would love him.

  4. Philly will draft a stud WR this year who will slide right in the offense. Philly runs that double TE look anyway with two great options. Ertz & Goedert are definitely the best duo in the league. Baltimore had a nice trio with Hurst. Rams definitely have a nice set with Everett & Higbee. Can argue Cleveland with Hooper & Njoku. Pittsburgh gets a mention with McDonald & Ebron. But I believe Tampa becomes a big time 2 TE formation team. Perriman walked & that Arians offense & Tom Brady will have to meet in the middle. Brate & Howard will be a big part of the Brady magic. The “11” formation I believe.

  5. He’s a jump baller who needs to use his body for boxing out smaller DB’s, he has great film at Stanford and it was expected he would excel in the redzone. Unfortunately he suffered more from the mental game than physical last year and struggled to be in the right spots which hurt his rapport with Wentz.
There’s some good film out there from Dan Orlovsky when people were giving Wentz heat about his mid-year performance, showing it was his WR’s who weren’t running routes correctly – JJAW was one of the repeat offenders.

  6. His college film doesn’t show much that’s different than his NFL film. He’s a high-point-the-ball type of receiver who needs a well placed ball to our jump or body out smaller CBs. It’s easier to do that in the PAC-12 than the NFL. Agholor, on the other hand, was a pure speed receiver who couldn’t do much else when he came into the league, but learned some route running skills later on. Arcega-Whiteside is almost opposite in how he plays, but if he can start by running routes consistently, he can offer some production similar to Agholor later in his rookie contract.

  7. He has to show something this year after being a complete nonfactor last year. It was especially painful when he and DK Metcalf played in the same game and it wasn’t even close who was the better receiver.

  8. That was one of the worst rookie years imaginable. Crucial drops. When everyone went down he had every opportunity and “dropped the ball” on those as well. Then to see the practice squad guys come in and outplay him. They got more separation, made more plays, and earned more of Wentzs confidence. Terrible rookie showing from so many angles.
Here’s hoping its just taking him an extra year to get comfortable. If he doesnt make a massive jump after his first full nfl off season he’ll be out of the nfl soon.

Hurst was traded to the Falcons a few weeks ago, and offensive formations are named for number of running backs first, then number of tight ends. The personnel grouping you’re referring to would be called 12 personnel. A formation would be how those players from that personnel would be set on the field.

  10. It’s a stretch to think a rookie WR, who may have limited offseason prep due to the virus, will come in and make a huge impact. So going forward the Eagles WRs are Greg Ward and Desean Jackson, at least for 3 games or so. Not great

I can’t tell if this is sarcasm. He was never in the vicinity of the ball because he didn’t know the playbook. It took him until week 13 to figure it out. He was running into other receivers.he did have one big throw come his way, which he dropped at the goal line, which would have won the game. He was drafted too high and this could be one of the picks that is Howie’s undoing.

  12. Unfortunately, change the “j” in jump to a “D” and that’s what’s probably going to happen again this year.

  13. JJ was drafted as a replacement for Jeffery in the future (same style of play) , that being said , neither he nor Jeffery are going to run away from coverage .Just throw the damn ball !
It’s not a question of JJ being comfortable but Wentz. Hmmm rumor had it that Jeffery was complaining anonymously to reporters that he wasn’t getting enough targets . Maybe Wentz doesn’t throw into tight coverage unless it’s to move the chains or at the goal line.

Perhaps you missed the Eagles/Lions game. Wentz hit him in the hands with what would have been a game-winning catch, and it just bounced away. I’m not saying he’s a bust, but he had a poor rookie season, even considering that WRs typically aren’t great right away.

  15. Howie Roseman is near the bottom of the league when it comes to drafting. If not for Wentz, he’s have been fired already. Much in the way that Frank Reich helped Dougy P keep his job.

  16. He is really bad……could have had metcalf…hilarious…roseman is so overrated….joe douglas was bigger reason than roseman that the eagles won the luckiest sb in the history of the NFL.

Wasnt there a superbowl where I guy caught a ball on his helmet?
