Zac Taylor: We feel very confident with whoever we decide to take No. 1

The Bengals’ original pre-draft itinerary had coach Zac Taylor and director of player personnel Duke Tobin in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday. Instead, Taylor spent the day in a spare room upstairs in his Cincinnati home, making phone calls and watching film.

All indications are the Bengals will select LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall choice on April 23.

But the Bengals didn’t get to see Burrow workout as planned during LSU’s pro day. They didn’t get a private workout with him. They didn’t get to have him visit Cincinnati.

“The only thing you didn’t get a chance to see was a guy throw 40 throws in front of you,” Taylor told Geoff Hobson of the team website. “At the end of the day, what does that really give you in the grand scheme of things? Sometimes that’s a big factor if you take a guy in the fifth or sixth round. Something like that. We’ve had plenty of exposure to the guys that have put themselves in position to be the No. 1 pick. We feel very confident with whoever we decide to take.”

The Bengals, like every other team, are doing Zoom or FaceTime interviews instead of in-person visits. Teams may contact an unlimited number of incoming rookies up to three times per week, for up to one hour at a time, according to the NFL.

Phone calls, though, can’t replace the pro days for prospects who didn’t work out at the Combine or for players coming off injury. They also don’t give team doctors a chance to exam prospects.

“That’s hard to replace with a phone call,” Taylor said. “You look at our undrafted history here and our scouts have done a great job finding guys that can play for us. And the coaches started looking at players when we prepared for the Senior Bowl, so we’ve been looking at guys three weeks or a month longer than we normally would have. We really feel like we’ve got a chance to talk through those guys that didn’t have a pro day. The medical is always going to be a challenge. You’ve just got to be as thorough as you can.”

  1. I think the Bengals will now trade down because of the magnified risk. You need to meet personally and workout #1 overall. The entire season could be cancelled and it seems to me the value of any player, especially #1,decreases by the day.

Also,I wonder what the 2021 draft order may be if 2020 is cancelled?

  2. Come on Florio try to spin some narrative so your Steelers aren’t victimized by Joe Burrow twice a year. Never forget Carson Palmer’s last game (*NFC Championship, which cost his team the Super Bowl): 4 ints and 2 fumbles…Bengals comin’ up!!!!!Who Dey?!!

Mr. Florio, as he has stated himself countless times, is a lifelong Vikings fan. Try to keep up.

  4. With the Bengals, nothing is guaranteed, Well know as one of the cheapest teams that has minimal scouting and support staffs to save money. The Bengals are known as one of the worst football organizations in the league.

  5. The Bengals are cheap, but they have drafted and scouted quite well. Say what you want about how dirty Burfect is. He solidified the middle of their defense for years as a 5th round (?) pick.
They were consistently a playoff team with an average QB in Dalton. We can all name at least 4 teams that have been worse up top the last decade: Cleveland, Miami, Detroit, Washington, Jets…

  6. Wow, didn’t think there were so many Bengals fans here. Not surprised to see they aren’t all the bright though

  7. It doesn’t really matter who they choose, the player is screwed either way. It’s the Bengals and if Burrow is smart, he will pull a Eli Manning to get out of be drafted by them. There are NFL teams that have zero interest in winning a championships and only exist for the sole purpose of getting a revenue check…the Bengals are number one on that list. Others are the Browns, Jets, Jags, Lions, and Bills to name a few. Who cares if you look bad Joe, ask Carson how it was there getting beat up year after year with no help and then ask him about having to retire to finally escape from craphole of a team/city.

  8. The smart play for the Bengals would be a trade down with Miami. Take two of their first round picks and a second rounder. Take Herbert or maybe Tua and a LT. Then add some weapons like Lamb to go with AJ Green and they can change their entire culture and FINALLY be about trying to win instead of just trying to make money. Cindy deserves a winner. Their Fans deserve better.

  9. mike brown is cheap. Joe burrow at 1 is a whole lot cheaper than 3 1st round picks the dolphins would have to trade. Not to mention burrow alone will sell more tickets than 3 draft picks most fans don’t want.

    Burrow is a once in a generation prospect. It’s a no-brainer.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

He couldn’t start at Ohio State and had once in a generation Players around him at LSU. That’s a no brainer.
