Derek Wolfe: Ravens can “for sure” have best DL in league

Derek Wolfe wasn’t the Ravens’ first choice as a free agent addition to their defensive line, but they turned his way after a deal with Michael Brockers fell through.

Wolfe doesn’t think that change is going to have a negative impact on the performance of the unit. They’ve also added Calais Campbell in a trade to go with holdovers Brandon Williams and Jihad Ward in a group that Wolfe believes is going to be better than any other in the NFL.

“I think we can have the best defensive line in the league, for sure, and we could break records. We could break the rushing record — yards per rush, stuff like that,” Wolfe said, via NBCSportsWashington.com.

The 2000 Ravens set that record for the Super Bowl era by allowing 2.69 yards per rush. The 2019 Ravens gave up 4.4 yards per carry, so the addition of Wolfe and Campbell would have to have a major impact in order for the team to make that kind of improvement.

If they do or even if they come close, the team’s chances of repeating the 2000 squad’s postseason success will look pretty good.

  1. I’m still waiting to read about a player who says the team he is joining is not very good and he expects to have an average year.

  2. For sure, the Ravens can have a great D. Too bad it won’t make up for the playoff miscues created by their scattershot QB.

  3. Come on now, no reason to be cynical. He’s like a kid who just fell in love, he isn’t capable of seeing flaws, he sees only hope and unlimited potential. When you think about it, it is downright romantic.

  4. Redskins easily. Especially after adding Chase Young to Jon Allen, Daron Payne, and Montez Sweat

  5. Easily?? LOL 4 guys that havent done a thing yet?? Good luck

  6. Ravens only weakness at WR and inside linebacker. They have to be the favorite to win it all next year.

  7. Gotta love casual fans who post responses like this and they don’t even follow the game closely.

How do you figure? If you have anyone other than KC, you’re just a homer. I love the Ravens too, but let’s be real. Last season, as great as it was, was very unlikely. Too many factors involved to make any claims of grandeur at this point. We don’t even know if there will be a season!

  9. I am so glad BB passed on this turd. I forgot how much of a tool he is.

Perfect fit with that mouth in Baltimore.

  10. Uh, he said they “can” have the best d-line in the league, “for sure”. In other words, it’s definitely a possibility. Far from a guarantee.

  11. It amazes me how my Redskins fans forget about Matt Ioannidis on the defensive line. He is one of the most productive DT in the league. The addition of Chase Young should make this a very scary group to deal with.

  12. Bears. Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Bilal Nichols, Robert Quinn, and Khalil Mack.

And then add in Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan at ILB and you’ve got the best front seven in the NFL.

  13. Maybe for few weeks. I don’t expect an aging defensive line to stay healthy for the season.

  14. That’s hilarious. An average Wolfe, a 100 year old Calais Campbell, and Ward who the Colts released last year with a struggling DL. Yeah that sounds like a winning group there!

  15. If Philly trades for Yannick, a Defensive line with Fletcher Cox, M.Jackson, J.Hargrave, B.Graham, D.Barnett and an added Yannick will not only be the best Defensive line in the league but best line in the NFL since the 85 Bears and 91 Eagles.

But I agree the Skins Line and Ravens line are scary good.

  16. The Ravens D Line will kick ass this year. With their secondary, no one will be open forcing opposing QB’s to hold the ball too long. Will be at or near this year in sacks!

Amazing how people see what they want to see, isn’t it?

They had to scale back from Brockers and then got nervous by overpaying Wolfe and his injury prone self. He is not an every fown player, but losing Pierce was a huge blow for sure.

Judon at his price is hilarious to me as well. Most of their cap are rentals on the D Line.
