David Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins still haven’t passed physicals

The biggest trade of the 2020 offseason still isn’t finalized, nearly three weeks after the deal was preliminary done.

Per multiple sources, neither receiver DeAndre Hopkins nor running back David Johnson have passed their physicals. As a result, Hopkins still isn’t officially a Cardinal, and Johnson still isn’t officially a Texan.

So what happens if Johnson or Hopkins fail their physicals? That question was posed by a reader for Sunday’s mailbag, and it justified its own response.

As one source explained it to PFT, Johnson has had a preliminary physical performed on his wrist, which was injured in Week One of the 2017 season. He passed that portion of the physical, despite reduced range of motion that initially caused the doctor (not an NFL doctor) to hesitate. Johnson still has to take a physical as to the rest of his body.

Put simply, if Johnson or Hopkins fail their physicals, the trade will be off. As a practical matter, that gives both the Texans and the Cardinals an out, if they want to avoid the deal — and if they can persuade their doctors to give either guy an “F” on his physical.

For now, there’s no reason to think the Cardinals or the Texans would want to renege. But what if during the draft the Texans have a great running back tumble into their laps in, for example, round three or what if, for example, the Cardinals stumble into a great receiver who would be much cheaper than $22 million per year?

Then there’s the bigger question of what happens with the second-round pick that the Cardinals will be sending to the Texans and the fourth-round pick that the Texans will be sending to the Cardinals? If the physicals aren’t done and the trade isn’t done, how can the 2020 draft picks that were part of the deal change hands?

As one source explained it to PFT, the 2020 draft picks mean that the physicals will have to be done by the start of the draft, or the two sides will have to come up with other terms.

For Johnson, none of it matters; his $10.2 million salary is fully guaranteed regardless of whether the Cardinals or Texans pay it. (He also has another $2 million in fully-guaranteed salary for 2021.)

So the situation gives rises to plenty of questions, and answers in the form of completed physicals or alternative trade terms need to come within the next 19 days.

  1. Neither team wants any part of backing out of this trade.

David Johnson could show up with 1 leg and he’d still pass the physical.

Arizona stile Hopkins from Houston so their aren’t about to let him leave.

  2. You mean BOB has a chance to be utterly stupid twice? Wow.

Can’t wait until the Texans Doctor gives everyone a reason to double down on him or let him off the hook.

  3. Texans fans are probably hoping Johnson fails his physical. That would negate this stupid trade that saddled them with an $11M player who will be lucky to play six games next year while trading away arguably their second best offensive players.

  4. “and if they can persuade their doctors to give either guy an “F” on his physical.”

    NONSENSE.

You seriously think a doctor will RISK HIS MEDICAL LICENSE to lie on a player’s physical just because a team wants it? Yikes.

Only people who say ‘Boston-Blws’, are New Yorkers. As an athlete not only is that offensive (you never played sports, you dislike the fan base) but as a fellow New Yorker, your grammar is horrific and embarrassing. Not to mention, your post makes no sense.

  6. Say this trade does get voided. Can O’Brien get anything for Hopkins when he tries to trade him again? Or does he have to go to the Osweiler/Clowney maneuver and basically pay the other team to take him?
Now that would really be embarrassing.

  7. Mike, you were a labor lawyer in your prior life, what is the word on workout bonuses and per game bonuses if the season is delayed or cancelled? You gave a bit of a overview last week, has the NFL or the players union (referee union) offered any further details?

  8. If the trade is void..would other teams like my Iggles step up and make a better offer for Hopkins? I would think that all the bad press BOB has gotten, he’d welcome a failed exam. ..JUST SAYIN’

  9. Just because AZ just traded for DHOP Don’t just assume AZ won’t draft another WR either. AZ should easily have a top 5-10 and should be able to score with relative ease AVG 26-28PPGs, you add another WR like Lamb and AZ goes from scary to arguably the best offense in football next season once they get Lamb or Ruggs really rolling.! The I wouldn’t put it past Keim/Kingsbury and if they were to add one more legit WR on the outside like CeeDee Lamb or a speed demon like Henry Ruggs to go with DeAndre Hopkins, Larry Fitz, Christian Kirk and Andy Isabella w/ elite 4.31 speed & is a little beast whom himself is ready to really explode into the scene in his 2nd year w/ two really good TEs n two stud RBs One of which is quickly emerging as one of the top best 3-5 best backs in the NFL in Drake & both averaged well over 5+YPC each last year and teams got to worry about n account for Murray’s rushing speed/ability as well. You add another elite talent like Ruggs/Lamb and that offense becomes lethal scary.

Roseman is already said the ask from BOB was different for the Eagles than Arizona because BOB wanted a starting RB back in the deal. The Eagles were not giving away a 1st + more to turn around and give a 20 mill/yr contract.

I am actually surprised the Rams didn’t trade for him before releasing Gurley. Cooks & Gurley for Hopkins would’ve been a win for the Rams even if they just turned around and traded him for picks.

  11. ” and if they can persuade their doctors” That’s a good one. Key word “their”. No persuasion necessary.

  12. Clearly, Hopkins and O’Brien had a falling out of sorts. But I don’t agree with Hopkins wanting more money right after he just got an extension. I don’t think it’s right that players want a new contract every time the salary cap goes up.

I was wondering the same thing, but I suspect the Rams are in such cap hell that they aren’t looking to take on all that salary with Hopkins.
