Ohio governor on NFL football by September: “I just don’t know”

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, the only thing we know is that the coronavirus controls the timeline.

And so with the President recently predicting that the NFL season will commence as scheduled, the governor of a state that hosts two of the NFL’s franchises (and that also happens to be the cradle of pro football) isn’t quite as optimistic.

It might be,” Ohio governor Mike DeWine, a Republican, told Tony Rizzo and Aaron Goldhammer of 850 ESPN Cleveland on Monday. “I just don’t know. I don’t know where we’re going to be and I don’t think anybody really knows. . . . Theoretically, it’s certainly possible that with some significant testing, you could put players on the field long before you could put people in the stands.”

That will be the key: Regular testing that creates quick and reliable results, in order to spot a potentially contagious player, coach, trainer, etc. before the virus spreads like wildfire through a locker room. Even then, games will lack the noise, the optics, the overall ambience that comes from playing in front of fans.

But football without the big-time feel that comes from a full stadium is better than no football at all. Given the billions that will be on the line, bank on the NFL doing everything it can to come up with a way to plays its games in 2020.

  1. All I know is, whatever happens and when, mass gatherings will be the last restriction lifted. Contact sports poss off until a vaccine. Legal nightmares. And covid-deniers need to get real.

  2. Football in an empty stadium for maybe two months before it potentially comes back again … I’d pass on that.

  3. Football is the least of my concerns right now. Until this thing is over, Coronavirus is the most important thing by far.

  4. I know this is a football website, but let’s have some perspective. People are dying. Stop asking about the entertainment where billionaires pay millionaires to run with a ball.

We can live without a football season.

  5. Nobody’s gonna want to sit in a stadium with some guy behind you with a hacking cough.
Maybe last year that guy was coughing and you just let it go because you assume he’s been smoking cigarettes all his life. But now, you aren’t so sure.

And the guy sitting next to the aisle who chews tobacco and spits it everywhere? Like he did in the parking lot for the past 3 hours while tailgating? Everyone’s cool with that guy being near you and your family?

And how is social distancing supposed to work when entering and exiting the stadium? The lines to get in will have 60,000 people 6ft apart on all sides? Everyone leaving will have to do it by section and row? Folks who walked to the stadium, the cops will enforce social distancing? Tailgating will be cancelled? Or can you prove that all your tailgaters live in the same house?

And as far as players go, they would have to be isolated, their spouses and girlfriends, even the party girls waiting to get invited up to the hotel rooms, they all would have to join the players in isolation. Their kids would all have to be isolated, too, because their schoolmates may have a parent who travels internationally who might infect their own kids.

This would all have to be to protect everyone on both teams against infection and the resulting 2-week quarantine.

With NFL football, how does one protect himself on the defensive line when the offensive guard right across from him sneezes without moving his hand to cover his nose (lest he get a False Start penalty) right there in his face?

Sports is not consistent with halting a contagious virus. Being a spectator in attendance watching sports with a contagious virus lurking is not a safe thing to do.
The only way this works is with a vaccine. No one comes into a stadium without proof that they got the vaccine.

Oh, and if you are a ticket holder and you find out you have the virus and can’t attend, you should get a refund of your tickets. It should not be on you to find someone else to take you ticket.

Speaking of which, if you are a ticket holder and the team finds out you are infected, the team is not responsible to contact the County Health Dept to trace all who were in the nearby rows and sections of their own possible infection from that person.

  6. If anyone gives you a glimmer of hope just read a book . Otherwise within five minutes someone else will come out and snuff out all hope. How many of these maybe this maybe that do we really need ?

  7. Wall Street hears “decline in deaths”. Woohoo Buy Buy Buy. But HELLO we’re all in quarantine!!!

  8. There will be NFL football, the elitists will make sure of it. After the first high profile player drops dead from it 2 weeks into camp, the season will be over. Not when the first ball boy, equipment man, scout, ref, trainer or practice squad player drops, when the first 15 million dollar player drops period!

  9. This man has been a rock for the last month in this state. A brutally honest, refreshing politician. He has walked that line where he knows how to get things done and talk to the masses without insulting anyone. Very positive man in this day of lets take sides. I did not vote for him, but I will if he runs again.

  10. Yea so even if Seattle is covid free, if there are cases in L.A. then games can’t be played. The disease will not conform to NFL scheduling. And cities and states will all be dealing with their own virus issue.

  11. Maybe the players could play fully suited in bio-hazard suits, with N95 respirator masks and safety goggles.

    That’s ridiculous.

So is worrying whether players might spread coronavirus during a game. Yes they might. Coronavirus is a new permanent fact of life, unless we’re never going have physical contact with each other again waiting for the cure. There is not going to
be a magic All Clear date on the calendar where it’s safe to resume normal activities risk-free. Let them play ball IF they want to, i’m sure there are plenty of us who would suit up & take that chance for millions of $$ a year.

  12. Multiple owners have a direct line to the President and have been told this virus will definitely be contained by the beginning of football season in September. That’s why the NFL hasn’t overreacted during the pandemic.

  13. I cant wait to this scam is over. More people are going to be destroyed then saved.
This cure is definitely more costly then the disease.

  14. I dont think so. Theres SO much more involved than just having a Non stay at home order.
Stadiums need to be cleaned, people need to believe its over, need to believe they are safe. You have broadcasters needing assurance they are ok, you have to be positive nobody is positive for the virus, and that it will be a safe game for all involved.

  15. Nothing will be close to before covid until we get a vaccine and that is widely available across the globe.

  16. Stay inside and take care of yourself and family. People have been taking this lightly and only getting worse. Stay in month of April so we can get over this and have a Memorial day cookout with friends and family. Football as a whole will take care of itself, it’s time to take care of ourselves and family. We don’t do these things, second coming in the fall. Ain’t a Debbie downer, just a realist. Stay strong, stay healthy, and God Bless.

PS: Owners don’t care in sport about us, getting us back in the seats to make money. Have them revamp TV contracts while we watch it at home with family. Yeah, never been done in history, but 2020….We making it

  17. From the 1918 Pandemic history on the CDC website:

    March 1918:

“Outbreaks of flu-like illness are first detected in the United States.”

    September 1918:

“Between September and November, a second wave of flu peaks in the United States. This second wave is highly fatal, and responsible for most of the deaths attributed to the pandemic.”

    https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/1918-commemoration/pandemic-timeline-1918.htm

Restarting mass gatherings would be the stupidest thing we could do. That flu cost us 675,000 lives. We went from growing by 1.3 million in 1917 and 1919 to shrinking our population by 60,000 in 1918. America was roughly 1/3 the size it is now back then so we could potentially lose 2 million people if we have a similar trend.

I’m not talking political opinion, I’m talking statistics and math and they don’t care about who you vote for. What we are facing is unprecedented and we need unprecedented action. So what if we lose football for a year. It’s just a game.

I know you’re bored and want a distraction, but we shouldn’t risk the death of hundreds of thousands if not millions of people so you have something to do on Sunday and Monday night.

  18. You really think the nfl will go 6 months without 1 player getting the virus? Because 1 player is all it will take to totally shut down the league for a month. Then if you start it up again, you can’t be crazy to think you’re in the clear.

Ironically, the best thing to do to have a full season would be to have every player get the virus and develop immunity (which by the way they still don’t know if immunity happens or if this virus just mutates so you get different versions). Not exactly a high demand option.

If they cancelled the olympics in August, how could the nfl be arrogant enough to think their season will go as planned?

The odds are overwhelming in favor of a total shut down because sports are the last to start back up. just because cases are “going down” at the moment doesn’t mean that will continue when everybody at home suddenly goes back to work.

  19. No 2020 baseball or football season, life will go on, it really will.

    Stay healthy my friends!

  20. Football will be played with no fans in the stands and the ratings will be out of control great. This will be like that freak show I couldn’t take my eyes off of when the players went on strike and the guy who served me a beer a month earlier was the starting tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Life evolves. Get used to it. I just don’t want to be around when our environment breaks down because that will be something we can’t undo.

  21. The hydroxychloroquine drug mixture given last week in New York is working. The numbers they estimated will dramatically fall. This is going to be over faster than you think.

  22. They should get ahead of this and start preparing for a December start. Superbowl in May, draft in August and straight to 2021 preseason/training camp.

  23. “Covid deniers.” – no covid denier here, but you DO realize it will never ever go away right, even with a vaccine. You do know that millions will still get it and people will die with when there is a vaccine right. Are you going to live like a coward your whole life, are you going to be one of those kinds of guys wearing a mask even 5years from now? On the flip side maybe people need to accept reality that this is a part of life. Get busy living or get busy dying

  24. Epidemiologists say they will need two tests that can be analysed quickly.1. to tell if they test positive for the virus and 2 Do they show antibodies that would indicate they were infected and recovered from the virus. No other scenario would be safe for players and eventually communities with workers wanting to return to employment.

  25. “Wall Street and NY seems to think it’s ending soon.”

China opened up Wuhan province and public spaces last weekend. If this creates another wave of infections it will be clear there will be no sports this fall.

If it does not create another wave of infections there possibly could be an NFL season and fall college sports.

  26. “The hydroxychloroquine drug mixture given last week in New York is working.”

Exactly where was this mix “given”? It is not in general use in hospitals because it is unproven and has already killed people who took it thinking it would help with this.

At most there are a couple studies that show it may, emphasis on may, have some effectiveness to help.

No one has died from taking a FDA approved 70 yr old drug. I can’t believe the misinformation you are feeding people. Just sad.

As for the rest here, you can not lockup 350 million people for 6 months. Nor can you expect a free people to keep giving government so much power in perpetuity.

  28. Worried about a football season? The Supreme Court of the USA decided yesterday that in person voting @ polling sites in todays primary in Wisconsin is perfectly fine. So your choice is take a chance and go out to vote or screw it and stay home and safe and have no vote. A football season??

  29. there is no way that 80,000 people or so will be allowed in a stadium at that time. I’m hoping we’re on our way back by then but not at that scale..

This clown just won’t go away…and now he thinks he’s in charge of football.
    ______
    He’s loving his 15 minutes.
Can’t go 2 hours without a press conference…. Saying the same thing over and over.

  31. I know some people here are on this hydroxychloroquine hype train (I wonder where that’s coming from), but the fact of the matter is that 1) patients with lupus, who take the drug as part of their regular regimen, are still contracting and dying from coronavirus; and 2) people who don’t know better are taking large doses of it and dying or having severe side effect (a couple in AZ did so, with the husband dying and the wife undergoing a lengthy hospital stay). There’s no reason to believe that this is a miracle drug.

where are you getting your news??? there is so much wrong with EVERYTHING you just said I don’t know where to begin.
the Fish cleaner story was proven to be a sham, just the tiniest bit of actual research will tell you who this woman was and what her agenda is.

Those are good reasons not to go to games period, virus or no virus. A lot of people are just gross and don’t practice good hygiene, why surround yourself with them for 3+ hours?

  34. What’s the point to having this website or sports reporters like florio if there will never be sports again. At some point we are going to have to get back to normal life. We get viral outbreaks every 4-5 years (remember bird flu, swine flu). I agree with the previous poster if you choose to hide away go ahead your going to die anyway. We shouldn’t live our lives in fear…

  35. hydroxychloroquine SULFATE-which is the drug people take IS NOT hydroxychloroquine PHOSPHATE that is used to clean fish tanks.

HYdroxychloroquine phosphate is what those 2 sorry people did not realize

  36. What scares me is that the games start on time will full stadiums and Trump goes to one of them and is cheered big time like he has been at other games. Trump has to be defeated in November at all costs, so I am prepared to lose all of football and all of sports until 2021 to ensure he is defeated. Others should be prepared to make whatever sacrifices it takes to be rid of Trump and stop being so selfish.

You should also prepare to be disappointed in November.

  38. Trump…4 more year😜

He’s trying to make sure we do NOT go into a possible “next depression”.

    Less talk, more listening.

Why the misinformation? The couple in Arizona who took FISH FOOD, basically poisoned themselves. The woman who survived, has mental health issues and her motive is now being questioned.

The drug in question is a FDA approved 70 plus year old drug, that hasn’t killed anyone. Add, you need a Doctors prescription to get the pills to begin with, and your whole post is misinformed and sad.

  40. I have caught up on 20 yrs of tv shows and become an alcoholic. Bright side, I’m a awesome cook.
