Dak Prescott, Dez Bryant again defy local “stay at home” restrictions

Getty Images

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and free-agent receiver Dez Bryant continue to disregard important restrictions to out-of-home activities as communities throughout the world try to limit the potential spread of the coronavirus.

In videos posted by Bryant on social media, the franchise-tagged quarterback and the pass-catcher who very much would like to return to the Cowboys continue to flaunt their defiance of rules that have caused millions to change their habits dramatically.

Although there’s no evidence in the latest social-media posts of a failure to keep proper distance (and no photos of participants with their arms draped around each other at the end of the workout), Prescott and Bryant as explained by Drew Davisson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram worked out at A+D1 Training in Dallas County, Texas, despite state and local requirements to remain at home and to not work out at gyms.

Davisson explains that the Texas governor’s executive order, dated March 31, states that “people shall avoid eating or drinking at bars, restaurants, and food courts, or visiting gyms, massage establishments, tattoo studios, piercing studios, or cosmetology salons.” (Emphasis added.) More specifically, Dallas County has issued a local order stating explicitly that “[a]ll public or private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit are prohibited.”

It doesn’t matter that there were apparently fewer than 10 people working out. It doesn’t matter that Bryant posted no videos showing anyone within six feet of each other. Prescott and Bryant were not supposed to be there, at all. They should be at home, like so many others currently are.

Besides, the concept of social distancing gets turned on its head when a football gets passed from person to person, as the ball is touched by multiple people’s hands — hands that easily could spread the virus.

It doesn’t matter whether the virus actually was spread among Prescott or Bryant or anyone else who was at a facility that should have been empty. These requirements are aimed at preventing circumstances where the virus could spread.

Beyond the fact that Prescott and Bryant are blatantly disregarding state and local mandates is the message sent by the decision to brazenly publicize videos of their workouts. At a time when many continue to refuse to take the situation seriously, the involvement of the quarterback of America’s Team in such activities tells football fans and anyone else paying attention that Prescott and Bryant either think that it’s no big deal — and it gives college and high-school football players (along with other NFL players) fodder for justifying their own decisions to ignore requirements to stay at home and avoid workout facilities.

Meanwhile, many are blindly defending Prescott and Bryant against criticism, highlight the undercurrent of ignorance, stupidity, and/or flat-out disregard for the vulnerable members of society who are getting sick and who are dying because people continue to not take steps to freeze the distribution of the virus in its tracks.

Where are the Cowboys as this is happening? Where is the NFL? Perhaps the teams and the league should take a step back from their obsession to ensure that the virtual draft works without any major glitches to ensure that everyone connected to the league is following the same laws that so many others are adhering to, even if we’d rather not.

No one, apparently, can keep guys like Prescott and Bryant from doing things they shouldn’t be doing. But why are they making their violation of these laws public? Again, it’s ignorance, stupidity, and/or flat-out disregard for the vulnerable members of society who are getting sick and who are dying because people continue to not take steps to freeze the distribution of the virus in its tracks.

  1. Why don’t they just workout at someone’s house? They’re not living in slums. They probably live in areas where the average back yard is an acre. Just practice there.

  2. Maybe Dak wants to be released. And, since Dak is going to have difficulty holding out this is his strategy.

Or, this is the sum of Dak’s leadership ability.

It would explain why the Cowboys lost to inferior teams (last year).

  3. I’m a huge Cowboys fan, but this shows damn ignorance. He doesn’t deserve the money he’s asking. Great QB, but not elite. And he’s not doing a good job of being the face of the franchise. Get a clue Dak and start acting like you are a professional.

  4. Neither are under contacts so nothing NFL or Cowboys can do right? However they could be shut from being signed. The Cowboys could go cam or Jameis and dez well he’s a long shot to be anywhere. One would think they would be smart enough not to post a video even if they did workout. Again

  5. It is this mentality that is drawing out this pandemic. These clowns are contributing to the problem, and blatantly seem to not care. Not only does this increase the likelihood of susceptible people dying, but also putting the upcoming season in jeopardy. You would think if they don’t care about people’s lives, which it appears they don’t, they would at least care about their income. Glad they don’t represent my team.

  6. “No one, apparently, can keep guys like Prescott and Bryant from doing things they shouldn’t be doing. “…
The mantra of every offseason spoken by teams about all of their players.

  7. Things like quarantines – and local laws – don’t really apply to pro athletes, do they?? Those are just for us common people.

  8. Disgraceful. The NFL either mandates that team personnel adhere to the health regulations or I’m turning my back on this league. African American communities are being hammered by this disease. The league needs to model proper behaviour through this crisis.

  9. Wtg Florio! Thank you for calling out all the parties who seem to be implicitly condoning this illegal behaviour by turning a blind eye as under privileged communities across America get hammered with covid-19. The NFL is becoming a disgrace.

  10. Rarely agree with you on anything Mike, but here I do: they are idiots.

  11. They obviously don’t think the rules apply to them. Public safety means nothing to them.

  12. Dak is making the Dallas Cowboys franchise, and it’s fan base proud. Gotta love that leadership

  13. Suspend them both for one year (not that Dez will be signed anyway). Send a message.

I am not a guy who thinks sports figures are heroes or role models, but these two are actively working to subvert just simple good advice. Stay away from others and wash your hands.

  14. I’ve long thought Darwin phrased his idea “survival of the fittest” so as to fool healthy idiots!

  15. Typical professional athletes thinking that the rules don’t apply to them. Amazing that these guys can’t lead by example but rather show off their egos.

  16. We all know that even a 5th string DB could easily stay within 6 feet of Dez.

  17. Hopefully Goodell steps up and drops the hammer on these two bozos. A mandatory year off from football for both of them should do the trick. People are dropping dead by the thousands each day and these two idiots want to go out and potentially spread this even further.

  18. It is sad that there are still people who do not take this seriously. I’m a Dak fan in general (his contract demands not withstanding) but he’s flat out wrong and embarrassing himself on this issue.

  19. A 4 game suspension seems to be appropriate.

Why? Because it’s, conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the NFL.

If they do it again, suspend them for the whole season.

  20. Not surprised. There are a lot of idiots out there doing the same. Living their lives as if nothing was abnormal. Selfish, wreck-less, and irresponsible.

  21. Why is the place even open? The owner(s) of the business should have the doors locked.

  22. You would think that Dak learned from the last go around with his failure to do the right things….. The things we are doing to help save lives…

    Shame you them both….

  23. These men are professional athletes. They must work out. Maybe the social media posting was unnecessary but millennials must post in today’s world.

  24. arrest both of thes idiots. The state should fine them than the NFL should fine them. If that doesn’t happen than it just shows that celebrities have different rules. They both have total disregard for human life. I have no respect for either.

  25. You do not have the right to potentially infect someone else who might die from this disease!
Even if you are not concerned, your responsibility is to respect the rights of others. The NFL should issue a directive to stay at home and shelter in place to protect the health of NFL players and all others. This can kill NFL players regardless of their health.

  26. At what point do their agents get involved and assist these guys with smart decisions? I’m not letting the athletes off the hook, it’s just that the agents should do more than negotiate a contract.

  27. Under-reacting to this virus is just as bad as overreacting. These guys are selfish by disregarding these protocols. For all the commenters doing the “this is a free country” bit, you are right – but when your grandma (or wife etc) is hooked up to a ventilator, I suspect you’ll be singing a different tune.

  28. If one of these idiots suffers and/or passes away from COVID over someone who took reasonable precautions, I won’t feel an ounce of sympathy.

  29. Its all fun and games until they bring the virus home to their families.

  30. Even if you are not concerned, your responsibility is to respect the rights of others.

That goes both ways doesn’t it? If people are that scared of this stay home and you won’t have to worry about anybody else infecting you.

    Well said brother.

  32. “ It’s a free country”

Nowhere does it say that freedom allows you to willingly infect other people with a possibly deadly infectious disease

I heard this a lot when I taught middle school. People like that “free” concept. They seem to have missed the other important part of freedom…

Sympathy is not for the dead. It is for those left behind. I hope that these “idiots” do not suffer or die from anything but very old age. A little awareness of their responsibility to the larger community might help others to do the same…

  35. Dez has nothing to worry about as his career is over. Dak in the other hand is lashing out at the cowboys because of a lack at a long term deal. Throwing a fit like a child. I haven’t signed my tag so I’m technically not under contract. Perhaps, but he is with dannon, Campbell’s and sleep number beds. I wonder what they think of their pitchman blatantly disregarding state of emergency right in the middle of a pandemic? I hate to say this but Dallas doesn’t have him under contract right now but they do and maybe they should be the ones to send a message?

  36. I don’t wish anyone to catch this flu, but if you open the door for a vampire, you deserve the bite on the neck you will get.

    Party on, fools.

  40. Don’t get hung up on the location. Being in an otherwise empty gym is no worse then being on an otherwise empty backyard. Some have suggested they should just meet in one of their large backyards. The gym is not the problem. It’s the gathering of people at an active location is the concern.
We don’t know their interactions with others. What’s their link to others and those at risk? There are steps they can be taking to enclose their circle.
The videotaping is just stupid. It serves no purpose and not knowing the answers to what steps they are taking to make them a closed unit (if they are) does allow some to say ‘see it’s ok.’
But really, should anyone be basing their activities on ‘well, Dez & Dak worked out together?’
I’m not going to assume anyone who goes out isn’t taking steps to limit their exposure to others. Especially someone who can pay to have zero public interaction.

  41. Dak wants to be paid like an elite franchise quarterback but behaves like ignorant fool. I hope the Cowboys rescind the tag and cut his ignorant posterior. Stupid decisions off the field invariably find their way onto the field.

  42. Reminds me of other Dallas Cowboys big names. Unable to follow simply rules. Kids and adults look up to these athletes, what does this tell us about them? I have been a huge Cowboys fan starting from the 1970s. One thing I have noticed about them when they start thinking they are better than anyone else they start losing games & fans. In this case safety of the fans. I’m moving on to a team that holds better morals & ethics.

I knew someone would quickly cite this quote. Twice so far. It is often quoted today, but most do not know the context of the quote.

Franklin was writing about a tax dispute between the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the family of the Penns, the founding family of the Pennsylvania colony who ruled it from afar. The legislature was trying to tax the Penn family’s property to pay for frontier defense during the French and Indian War. The Penn family repeatedly told the governor to veto the legislation. Franklin believed that this was an effort to prevent the legislature to govern. He actually meant purchase a little temporary safety very literally. The Penn family was trying to give a lump sum of money in exchange for the General Assembly’s acknowledging that it did not have the authority to tax it. The quote refers to the ability of a community to defend itself as the essential liberty that it would be contemptible to trade.

  45. No surprise w/ Dez. We all know he is a knucklehead. I did expect more of Dak as the supposed leader of the team. What kind of message is he sending to his teammates?

  46. Dak could have a buddy or two stay at his place until this was all over and they could do any training they wanted because they were sharing a household. THAT would show leadership and dedication in his willingness to inconvenience himself. If he wants to be a leader he needs to act like one.

  47. Nobody ever accused either of them of being very bright. Now we know why.

  48. Their meeting was clearly better than all of the walkers and joggers on the Katy Trail. He tried to do it right. Fewer than ten people. Kept their distance. May have even helped a small business keep from going bankrupt by paying for use of the facility.

  49. Very disappointing Boys. You have a privileged platform to stand on because of your athletic prowess. You need to strap on the responsibility that comes with this privilege. There are no excuses. You can and should do better. As a lifelong Cowboys fan I expect you to live up to a higher standard and show true leadership especially for the black community that seems to be disproportionately affected by this accursed virus. Man up Boys!

  50. Glad they’re among a relatively rare example of society that endanger others to satisfy their own whims. At least everyone can see their blatant selfishness for what it is. Putting public figures on pedestals needs to stop at least as far as the application of sanctions for violating rules intended to be followed by everyone.

  51. Pandemic aside, why is Dak throwing to Dez? When he goes to throw to Amari he’s going to under throw him by 20 yards because of how slow Dez is now. Maybe the place they practiced is open only to them???? I don’t know how they don’t feel a little guilty. I feel bad for getting in my car to get my family groceries when we need them.

  52. If there are fines in the state for doing such things, send them tickets and arrest them if they don’t pay. Can’t fix stupid and, let’s face it, not talking about rocket surgeons (Frank Caliendo line) here.

  53. Some of you people make me sick with the comments you leave…ARMCHAIR COPS!! I bet every single one of you that made a comment on here that is a Dallas Cowboys fan will be jumping up and down doing back flips when Dallas wins games or, when Dak throws a 40yd pass down the sideline to Amari for a TD…right?? Give me a break and get off your damn high horse already. 1st off this is America the home of the FREE. last time i checked our constitution grants up freedom and no governor or state can take that away with any “stay at home” order!

  54. I wonder who they paid to let them in. Since it’s in Dallas county it should have been closed.

  55. @Brandon B, why would it be closed? That’s not how the shelter in place works. They didn’t have to pay anyone.
