Mike Mayock: We feel really good about the QB position with Carr, Mariota

The Raiders might have been “sniffing aroundTom Brady, but they never tried to shop Derek Carr as far as we know.

Instead, Brady signed with the Buccaneers, and the Raiders signed Marcus Mariota to backup Carr. As long as Carr is healthy and productive, he will start. But Mariota knows first hand exactly what that means.

Mariota was benched for Ryan Tannehill in the sixth game of last season and now is on his way to Las Vegas. Tannehill, acquired by the Titans in a trade a year ago, got the big contract in Tennessee.

Raiders General Manager Mike Mayock praised all four of his quarterbacks, especially Carr and Mariota, during a conference call Tuesday.

“We’re very appreciative to have Derek Carr,” Mayock said. “Jon [Gruden’s] offense, he’s going into year three of it. Marcus Mariota, Jon and I both know him very, very well. We feel really good about the quarterback position.”

Mariota, the second overall choice in 2015, went 29-32 in his five seasons in Tennessee. He never made a Pro Bowl and led the Titans to the postseason in 2017.

Mayock, though, still believes in Mariota.

“The cool thing with my background and Jon’s background is a lot of things that we said and did in our past are public,” Mayock said. “So if you’re Marcus Mariota and you want to know what the General Manager of the Raiders thought about him before he came out, or what Jon Gruden thought about him before he came out, all you’ve got to do is go back and check public records. I mean, he went through Gruden’s quarterback camp on television. I had him as the top quarterback in that draft. He knew that both of us believed in him coming out and still believe in him. He’s got to get healthy. We’ve got to rebuild him a little bit, get his confidence back, build him up from the ground up. It’s going to take a little while, I think, just to get him healthy and where he wants to be, but we’re excited about the quarterback room.

“I thought Marcus did a great job with first couple of interviews he had, just talking about where he was, which is wanting to support Derek. He wants to become the best version of Marcus Mariota that he can become, and that’s the way we look at it. Let’s see who the best Marcus Mariota is, and in the meantime, we love what we have with Derek Carr. We’re real happy with our quarterback room. We’ve got Nathan Peterman, who played well until he was hurt, and DeShone Kizer, a former second-round pick [of the Browns]. So we feel we’ve got a very strong quarterback room.”

So, for now, Carr has the starting job, and Mariota will begin his career with the Raiders as the No. 2 and an insurance policy.

  1. “We really feel good about having two back up QBs on the roster. We are just as good as the Bears, well check that, almost as good as Bears. They got Khalil Mack the most feared defender in the game and we got unknown draft picks, sooooooo.”

  2. As a Raider fan I say may the best man win. As a Raider fan I can say I am not really comfortable with either Quarterback. As a Raider fan I say in Gruden and Mayock we trust.

Last October in London Raiders 24 Bears 21. I would say that makes them better than the Bears and the most “feared” defender in the game who finished with 3 tackles 2 in the last minute when the Raiders were running out the clock.

  4. Thats like saying you took two tests, getting a 55% score on one and a 45% score on the other and boasting “I got 100%”.

The only way that works is if you let Carr start, and every bad result you get a do-over and can put Mariota in. Too bad it doesn’t work that way.

When you have 2 bad QBs you have 2 bad QBs, or no QB.

The raiders beat the Bears by 3 points after being in London all week and the Bears arrived on Saturday coming off a slump. Hats are off to Gruden’s genius planning that he admitted about to have the advantage. Gruden also acted like it was your Superbowl and mocked Nagy….childish.

The Bears are 20-11 with a divisional Championship since the Mack trade and the Raiders are 11-21

Sorry if they were a better team they would have won the game (and I really doubt the showed up on Saturday) Also when looking at the trade anyone with an IQ over 20 would know you can’t judge the trade until all assets have been received by both teams which means the Bears record in 2018 is meaningless to the discussion as the Raiders received nothing back until the 2019 draft when they selected Josh Jacobs who ran for over 1,000 yards in 13 games as a rookie. Let’s see who they draft @19 next week, not to mention what Mack’s contract does to the Bears down the road before we worry about who got fleeced.

Carr is the 10th best QB in the league.

  9. Screw the haters, that’s a great 1-2 punch and either one are better than MVP Trubisky and Trash Allen.

  10. To get payed alot of money and be a dumb GM … Wow … Raiders will win nothing significant with Carr or Mariota at QB … Deep in the middle of the season when your getting your butt whiped by Mahomes and the Chiefs , Whatever QB and the Chargers and Lock and the Broncos and then you realize that your Raiders are the bottom of the division … It will be too late by then.

  11. So to comment on the foolish comment below,
In the 2019 NFL Draft the Oakland Raiders With the 24th pick acquired by the Chicago Bears in the Kalil Mack Trade select JOSH JACOBS!!!
who is clueless, you for not knowing what player that pick turned into or you for saying it out loud…

  12. If Mariota was in this draft he’d be the #2 overall pick. He’s had 4 different offensive coordinators in 5 years. Now he’ll have his 5th. Carr better stay healthy, and no throwing the ball into the ground, or there will be a new QB.

  13. The Raiders are decent at the QB position with Carr and Mariota. What they really need is good offensive coaching which they haven’t had since Bill Musgrave left the team.

  14. Ah yes. Was it only 6 years ago when the biggest argument in football was if it would be Winston or Marietta who would have too many SB rings to wear at their HOF induction? Now one is a backup and the other unemployed. At this point, barring a minor miracle, HOF is but dream. Which doesn’t mean they can’t be a fairly successful QB. Neither is flat out terrible. Winston has shown flashes of his talent but can he cut down on the INTs ?
It’s Marietta that intrigues me. He’s had four different OCs during his tenure in Tenn. Maybe sitting behind Carr and learning the system without the pressure of being anointed the Savior may ressurect his career.
