Cowboys pass on trade offers, Chaisson to take their sixth-rated prospect

The Cowboys, like every team in the league, did many, many mock drafts. Never did they have one where Oklahoma receiver CeeDee Lamb fell to them at No. 17.

“We felt like he was a top-10 player in this draft, and we’d never see him,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said, via Todd Archer of ESPN.

The Cowboys’ only pre-draft conversation with Lamb came at the Combine.

So imagine the Cowboys’ surprise when Lamb remained on the board when their turn came.

While they had bigger needs at edge rusher and cornerback, and LSU pass rusher K’Lavon Chaisson was available, the Cowboys decided they couldn’t pass on Lamb.

Lamb was the best player available by a wide margin on the team’s draft board. The Cowboys had the Sooner receiver the sixth-rated overall prospect, according to owner Jerry Jones.

Jones still calls passing on receiver Randy Moss one of his biggest draft day regrets.

So the Cowboys passed on trade offers from three teams to stay put and select Lamb.

“Lamb prevailed,” Jerry Jones said, via Archer. “We just didn’t want to miss him. Those trades ultimately are supposed to add another player to be valuable, but we couldn’t trump him. He was just there. He’s a football player. He’s a playmaker. He just earned it.”

  1. I like they went BPA as opposed to stretching for need. Good start, but gotta get some DBs tomorrow

  2. This makes up for the Dallas Goedert fiasco when the Eagles traded up one spot ahead to get him. The Cowboys were probably going to take him. This time the Cowboys get arguably the best WR in college, and the beagles settle for Fred Ex 2.0.

  3. That popping noise you may have just heard was the absolute minimal chance Dez Bryant had at rejoining his former team

  4. They didn’t screw this one up. If Marinelli was still here it would have been some average DE that never develops

  5. Much like the Eagles leap frogged in front of the Cowboys for Dallas Goedert, they returned the favor by snatching Lamb way from the Eagles. They got a GREAT WR. Eagles blew it big time this year….

  6. Well, I wanted Tua but when Lamb was there, I had zero confidence they would grab the star. McKinney was my other choice. Probably not a good time to wish Tua would have fell. Prayers to Dak. Horrible news. Wish that had not happened.

  7. Wow! Awesome pick! I wonder though, how much convincing it actually took to keep Jerry from trading the pick.

  8. The good news is Jerry remembers the Randy Moss blunderand did nt repet it. Cee Dee is da man!

  9. Speaking of Randy Moss, the Vikings had Cris Carter and Jake Reed as really, really good receivers when they picked him. Wide receiver isn’t a need for the Cowboys either but you have to take a guy if you have him ranked so much higher than anybody else.

  10. So if he was never even on your draft board as a possibility it means that you never really did thorough job of scouting him. He lasted to 17 because he has a bunch of red flags you’re about to find out about. Good luck Jeruh!!

  11. BPA. He fell because a lot of teams drafted for need and there were some quality players in this draft. My opinion, this is the steal pick thus far.

Wow, reading comprehension isn’t you thing, is it? They said he was on their draft board but in all the mock drafts they did he was never there at 17 when they had the Cowboys pick. In other words, he was always picked earlier. According to Michael Irvin, Dallas had him as their #7 overall prospect.

I’ve read tons of reports on him and have never read about any “red flags”. So please, regale us with your vast knowledge.

  13. Maybe there is a reason all those teams passed on him. Regardless it’s not like they stole him from the Eagles as multiple teams were between them and the Cowboys. You see they were picking where the playoff teams pick…
