Report: Trent Williams declined trade to Minnesota

The Vikings were close on a deal with Washington for left tackle Trent Williams earlier Friday. Their second-round selection of Boise State offensive tackle Ezra Cleveland indicated that any deal was dead and talks were finished.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports Williams nixed a trade to Minnesota.

“At some point over the course of today, Williams made it known he would rather not go to the Minnesota Vikings,” Rapoport said. “Essentially, that ended the trade right there.”

Who knows whether the sides would have completed a deal anyway, but it now is one less team interested in a trade for Williams.

John Keim of ESPN reports that other teams remain interested, but the 49ers’ interest is tied to whether Joe Staley retires to create a void at left tackle.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and Rams coach Sean McVay both have worked with Williams, as Keim noted.

The Rams, though, would have to create cap room to enter the Williams’ bidding.

So, for now, the stalemate between Washington and Williams continues.

  1. Thank GOD he turned down MN!
Vikings would have paid WAYYY too much in picks & money to Trent.
So he does t want to play in MN, so he’ll probably stay in WASH instead??

    Good Choice, Trent!

  2. So let me get this straight, he refuses to play for his team, demands a trade with limited trade partner options, then refuses to play for a contending team that actually wants to sign him?

  3. Trent Williams is such a loser that he makes Daniel Snyder look good. That is nearly impossible to do. I hope he goes to the worst team in the league and never wins another game.

  4. Vikings fans travel well all over the country. No matter where he plays he’s going to get booed for the rest of his career whenever he plays against Minnesota.

  5. Complains to be traded, then complains where hes traded to. Some people just cant ever be happy.

  6. This guy hasn’t played football in over a year. Who knows what he has left in the tank? Frankly I’m thinking this may be a blessing in disguise.

  7. I’m getting tired of this Trent Williams crap. The Redskins have botched their handling of his situation but IMO he has too. Drama Queen Williams. Just light up and retire Trent. Thanks for the Memories. HTTR

  8. This guy sounds like a problem. He demands a trade but not to certain teams. That’s fine, but buyer beware.

  9. Come back to San Francisco Trent. Many of us here weren’t happy when you got traded away and would welcome you back with open arms!

  10. So dumb. If you wanna leave then leave. Its not like this was Cleveland or Oakland. Even if it was if the Skins are so untrustworthy and horrible then why wouldn’t you leave and go to a team like the Vikings who at least look like contenders? For all his complaining really dumb and selfish move.

  11. Guy has been crying to get out of Washington for a year. A contending team tries to trade for him and he nixes it? Idiot.

  12. With all the draft capital the Vikings had, I thought Spielman might make a move for Williams. Not going to lie, would have liked to see him in purple but time will tell whether it’s a missed opportunity or a blessing in disguise.

  13. William’s missed a great opportunity in his biased approach to get a long term deal. I hope he gets only one year offers from every interest & he’ll have to prove himself no matter what.

  14. Keeps telling the ref skins to trade him but also keeps vetoing trades and wants a new deal. Good luck

  15. He has first hand experience of a Cousins led team and knows better. For the Vikings to have to extend Cousins just to give them cap space also says how desperate they are right now.

  16. Keep mortgaging the future with draft picks and $$$? No. 49ers were fine with Skule and Brunskill last year.

  17. He wants $20M a year to sit at home, at this point if I would just squat on him for the duration of his career, he is being completely unreasonable and not accepting any responsibility for his own culpability in not seeking outside medical opinions.

  18. He doesn’t want to play football. He wants to collect $$$ in a lawsuit vs the Skins without ever playing a down of football again..

  19. If they aren’t giving up a high pick in 2021 draft I make Trent play for the skins or sit again this year. He begs to be traded and you get a partner and he says no.

  20. I hope the Redskins sit on his contract. This guy and his agent have done nothing but complain in the media about wanting out of Washington. Now he wants to dictate which team he goes to? Make him play out his contract in DC or sit at home.

  21. The guy that really wants to get traded out of Washington is making it really hard to get traded out of Washington. ?

  22. To anyone who says “the Redskins are at fault” well here’s the proof that it’s not. If the report is true and Williams said he doesn’t want to go to Minnesota then that pretty much takes away the only major trade partner they had. Williams says “trade me” the Redskins tried to say “sure” then Williams said “no” to one trade team. This guy is a big baby, whines because Rivera didn’t talk to him right away (seriously!?) and didn’t even try to give Rivera a chance. I get being upset at Bruce, but he’s gone now. He should’ve bucked up and made nice with Rivera

  23. This is simple. The CBA needs to be adjusted. When a player DEMANDS to be traded, he has to give up the right to approve a trade. As soon as the “demand” is known (and especially in THIS case, where Williams has been pissing and moaning for two years), the trade value drops and it becomes harder to make a deal.

The team now has every right (legally and morally) to give him a play-or-retire ultimatum, with the option that he can try to find a trading partner willing to meet the price, which has to be a #1 pick (he’s better than anybody coming out and can start immediately and play at a high level). If he refuses to play or retire, require him to attend all mandatory functions, and make him inactive every week. Fine him for every practice or meeting he skips.

    Screw him.

    YOU LIKE THAT?

I wouldn’t want to play with Kirk Cousins either
    *********
Just so I understand, if Rick Spielman called you this morning and offered you a contract to play for the Vikings in 2020 you’d say “No thanks. I don’t want to play with Kirk Cousins.”??

  25. Please Lord do NOT bring this malcontent to San Francisco. We have a bunch of selfless guys so we do not need this “me first” loser.

  26. I was with Williams on this injury thing but he basically held out last year in protest looking for a trade. Now there is a chance to move to an actual playoff contender who’s had a need on the offensive line and say no thanks?

Maybe someone doesn’t have the passion to play football.

  27. Williams, get over yourself. You didn’t not play last season and you have no leverage in this situation. You’re behaving childish and foolish.

  28. I think Williams would’ve been our best lineman immediately, but after seeing what the Texans paid Tunsil, we couldn’t afford him

  29. Williams is adamantly denying he ever stopped this trade. Might be Washington front office trying to play hardball and got caught in a lie

  30. How bad is Minnesota as a franchise that even Trent Williams won’t play for them? Hilarious.

  31. If this report is true, the Skins should just end this BS. Give Williams an ultimatum… 1) Tell him to suck it up for a year, shut up & play like an all-pro, or 2) Dump his ass back on the reserve/non-football injury list w/out pay & let him rot for the last year of his contract.

Both of those teams would be an upgrade over the Redskins.

  33. What he wants is a trade to a team with lots of cap space so he can hold them for ransom on a new deal. Vikings don’t have the kind of cap space he needs. At 31 and having sat out a year, this is probably going to backfire on him.

  34. He did it to every team that showed interest and they all backed out because anything just doesn’t fit what he wanted. He’s just being a big head.

  35. YOU LIKE THAT?

I wouldn’t want to play with Kirk Cousins either
    ________

First of all, Kirk actually seems like an all around great guy and he is better QB than critics give him credit for.

That being said, all jokes aside, I bet Trent does have some type of beef with Cousins going back to their days together in D.C. under Jay Gruden.

It’s honestly the only reason I can think as to why he wouldn’t want to play in Minnesota. Especially when staying in Washington and continuing to pout & not play are the alternative…

But perhaps Trent is just a big bitch who doesn’t actually love to play the game, but only wants a quick payday.

  36. He did it to every team that showed interest and they all backed out because anything just doesn’t fit what he wanted. He’s just being a big head. He’s lucky to have the opportunity play for Vikings unlike others who wanted to but couldn’t because Vikes didn’t want them.

  37. Why would any team be interested in him now. All you ever hear from this guy is “I want…I want….I want….I want”. He wants out of Washington so bad but when he gets a chance to get out of Washington he doesn’t want to.

Washington should just put him on the inactive list all season and prepare to move on without him next year. He’s going to be an addition by subtraction.

  38. I’m a huge Skins fan but trust me this guy is a clown… he blamed everyone except himself for the medical issues he had. Skins told him to go in for a biopsy and he ignored them then it became their fault LoL.

  39. I hope he ends up playing sub in the Canadian Football League….in the coldest province of Canada.

  40. The Redskins can cut him and only take a 2 million dead cap hit. Obviously getting something for him is preferred, but between “sitting on him” and eating 14.5 million, eating 2 million is a lot better.

Other teams know this. Williams knows this. He can refuse every trade and eventually get cut, which makes him a free agent (I think? Is there a waiver system for this type of thing?) He’s going to get cut no matter what, so wait it out and get your choice of teams. I would never sign the guy, but it’s his best chance at landing somewhere he wants.

  41. Trent Williams doesn’t think Minnesota is a world-class organization. He’s right.

  42. It’s apparent there’s a lot of players who don’t want to play for the Minn Vikings,……… even some of the guys on their roster.

  43. For all you haters, the Vikings are a team in the playoffs regularly. So hate all you want. Only 3 teams are just as or more consistent.

  44. Williams is pulling an Antonio Brown, trying to be as big a pain as he can so Skins drop him and he can move on as a free agent. So obvious.

  45. Maybe he doesnt want to play football at all and he is sick of teams trying to make him do it? Somebody should tell him about retiring.

  46. Vikes don’t have cap room, Trent thinks he’s gonna sign a big top five tackle salary he’s higher then me right now. He knows Vikings wouldn’t spend big for a guy who probably wouldn’t even be an upgrade. See ya.

  47. Only thing I like about Trent Williams is how he smacked Richard Sherman back in the day.

  48. Trent Williams is such a loser that he makes Daniel Snyder look good. That is nearly impossible to do. I hope he goes to the worst team in the league and never wins another game.

    Hes already in Washington

Let’s face facts. Nobody wants to play in Loserville.
    *****
Loserville? Why are you bringing Green Bay into this conversation? I think they are too busy finding unnecessary replacements for their All-Pro QB and All-Pro RB while ignoring their defense.
