Sean Payton is taking the 2020 Buccaneers seriously

Contained within the NFL’s annual effort to sell hope to 32 fan bases was an observation from one coach who believes that two thirds of those fan bases are wasting their time.

Saints coach Sean Payton, appearing on the NFL’s Draft-A-Thon, said something publicly that plenty of NFL figures usually say privately: Roughly 20 teams in any given year have no chance at winning the Super Bowl.

The question came up in the context of whether Payton is concerned about the advances the Buccaneers have made in recent weeks, headlined by the arrival of quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

“I say this in all seriousness,” Payton said, via JoeBucsFan.com, “there’s only about 10 or 11 relevant teams. . . . When someone like Tom comes there, it’s not just the quarterback position. The thing as a coach in the division that concerns you, is you know just the standard’s going to change [in Tampa], and I think that’s a credit to the really, really, really special players.”

So the Buccaneers, in Payton’s estimation, have moved from the 20 or so irrelevant teams to the 10 or 11 relevant ones.

“We’re watching a month of my man [Michael Jordan] here,” Payton said, in reference to ESPN’s The Last Dance documentary. “He brought up everyone else around him, and I think that same thing will happen with Tom.”

And here’s another thing Brady can do, even if he only stays in Tampa for two or three years. He can sufficiently elevate the standard to the point that his influence lasts even after he retires. Which would make the Buccaneers relevant not for just a year or two but possibly for a decade.

  1. The bucs relevant for a decade? No way, not as long as they are owned by the cheapskate stripmall Galzers. They will not make a long term investment to retain talent. They just want to make a run and then hope ticket sales stay up for a few years afterward.

  2. The Glazer kids view the Buccaneers as a holding in their overall investment portfolio…,that’s how their Dad made his wealth. The difference between Dad and the kids is,Dad really was a football fan and wanted the Bucs to win.

What talent have the Glazers allowed to leave because they were unwilling to pay? The team has not had much of the way in talent to retain. Adam Humphries is the only one who comes to my mind and the Bucs may not have wanted to drop money on him because they have Mike Evans and Chris Godwin (who they Bucs will want to try to pay).

They extended Mike Evans with a big contract, and he is one of the best WRs in the NFL.

The Bucs franchise tagged Shaq Barrett based on his one great season, which may be one and done as far as any of us know.

The Bucs just invested some capital in Brady and Gronk.

The Glazers will clearly pay for talent, the team just has not had much talent since the early years of this century.

  4. Payton is such a blow-hard. It’s attitudes like that that cause you to overlook and lose to 2-and-7 teams.

So if his influence will make them competitive for a decade, why does everyone think the Patriots are going to be irrelevant since he left Foxboro? Doesnt it seem reasonable that New England’s relevance will last another decade because of Tom Brady’s influence on the team…?

Classic. It is like last Nov and Dec when all the sports writers across the country were saying the Patriots were not going to win anything because Brady was old, washed up, couldnt do it anymore, and that was further exacerbated by a roster with limited offensive talent… Then the Super Bowl happened, and Brady was unofficially done in New England. And all of those same sportswriters were telling us how Brady would transform any franchise int he league, and every QB needy team should go after him because he is still playing at a high level. What? Nov he was old and washed up, Feb he is still playing at a high level? LMFAO

He leaves New England and they immediately go tot he basement of the NFL, but when Brady leaves Tampa, they will remain relevant for a decade… You cant make this stuff up

  6. The Bucs haven’t been relevant in 15 years and their history of chosing HC, QBs and other players shows why!

  7. Dear Coach Payton,

The Tampa team will be easiest to render inept.

Take off the head of the snake.

Tomasina Brady hates to be hit. The Broncos demonstrated that hitting him early and often is the best way to neutralize him. Once you get into his head, he’s toast.

I’m not suggesting a few late hits early. But the 30 yards you give up will render him useless to his team for that game.

  8. A forty something year old Brady, who enters a transfer portal, is not going to carry a his new team to success for a decade or even five years after he leaves/retires. Even if he wins two Super Bowls in a row, I’m not buying what you’re over selling.

  9. Sean Payton taking the Bucs seriously is why the Saints signed Jameis Winston, make no bones about it, the ONLY reason why Winston was signed was to get into Winston’s head and get intimate knowledge of the Bucs playbook and players tendencies.
