Cowboys sign Andy Dalton

Andy Dalton is heading back home to Texas.

Dalton, who grew up in Texas and played his college football at TCU, is signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys, PFT has confirmed. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal guarantees Dalton $3 million and gives him the opportunity to make up to $7 million.

Dak Prescott is currently a free agent and hasn’t signed the franchise tag, and although he’s expected to be in the fold well before Week One, if Prescott and the Cowboys can’t come to terms, Dalton gives them a plausible starter. Assuming Prescott does sign, Dalton would be his backup.

The Bengals cut Dalton this week after drafting Joe Burrow with the first overall pick. Although there were reports that the Patriots and Jaguars could be interested in signing Dalton and giving him a chance to start, he has instead taken a deal where he’ll be a backup.

  1. Dalton is better than Prescott! Watch out Dak, the Jones’ are playing chess!

  2. Let’s go Andy!! Happy for him and hes got a chance to take the job from a guy on a 1 year franchise tag. Give him a good o line and hes always been above average. Great move.

  3. Cowboys fan AND Prescott fan here. Dak, take the $33 million, come back in 5 years and get more while you still can. A bird in the hand…

  4. I would have signed Dalton to a long term deal and rescinded Dan’s franchise tag. Good pick up nonetheless. Glad to see Dalton be able to go home.

  5. I kept telling people ad nauseam that the Pats are signing Dalton… at all. Can people move on from that narrative now? Stidham is their guy!

  6. Smart move: the roster is loaded, don’t sacrifice all of that to overpay Prescott.

  7. I kept telling people ad nauseam that the Pats are NOT signing Dalton… at all. Can people move on from that narrative now? Stidham is their guy!

  8. Cowboys? That’s a funny way to spell “Patriots.” We’ve been told for weeks that New England was the only landing spot for Dalton. The possibility of him going to Dallas (or anywhere else) was never mentioned.

  9. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal guarantees Dalton $3 million and gives him the opportunity to make up to $7 million.
    —————————-
The $3 million is close to what the Cowboys were going to pay Cooper Rush, It looks
like this spoils the chances of Cooper staying with the Cowboys.

  10. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dak .. … sup… where you at?

  11. Jerruh is playing Poker with Dak and his agent. And I like it. !!!

  12. I called this move earlier today. He’s better than Prescott and is actually living in reality thus won’t demand 35 million a year. Smart move by the boys.

  13. I don’t see this working out in Dallas. What criminal act would Andy Dalton commit to earn his Star from the team?

  14. And Aaron breathes a sigh of relief. The Pakres are desperate for a new QB, even after trading up in the draft to get his eventual replacement, so it’s good for Aron that he now knows Dalton isn’t going to come in and take his job this year.

  15. Called it…. Jerry is all done with Prescott and his silly agent. Should have taken that offer of $34 mil a year Dak it’s gone now

  16. I don’t know if Dalton is a long term answer in Dallas but you can be sure he won’t disappoint. He is certainly as capable of winning as Dak.

  17. So after having to listen to all the Boston press speculating about why the Pats would and should get Dalton because he would be cheap, as always they have no clue what they are talking about. This means you Felger,Mazz, Gasper, Bedard, Jones etal.

  18. Hmm. Methinks Prescott is running out of options.

DaK:”You can’t win it all WITHOUT me.”

Jerry:”We haven’t won it all WITH you.”

Great move by the Cowboys and a great price tag for it.

Meanwhile, the Covid, hon, is threatening to take all of this great theater from us!

  19. Waiting for the term “disrespect” to come out from some Cowboys player. Prescott himself shouldnt say anything but he will have more then enough buddies to back him up on social media.

So much for Dalton to the Pats too. They threat didn’t get well with he experts saying Dalton was perfect for Belichek.

  20. Between all his NON-social distancing and parties and mediocre play Dak better watch out… HE’S the one who is liable to be the backup once Dalton gets there with a good line in front of him. Don’t worry, though, Dak… you can always hang out with Cam…in the unemployment office….

  21. Mike McCarthy must be thrilled to have to deal with Dax’s attitude after this trade. Jerry strikes again.

  22. Dak did the Cowboys a major favor, they will save a fortune for an above-average quarterback!

  23. I’m an Eagles fan thinking the Cowboys are actually making some very good moves recently. They had a good draft, signed a few UDFA’s that I like, and now sign Dalton to a manageable deal that will pressure Dak to bring down his asking price. What kind of bizarro world is this??

  24. In nine months somebody in Texas is gonna name their baby Covid Dalton. You just watch.

  25. I’ve been quietly hoping this would happen for awhile. Dalton’s an average quarterback but he’s not that old and not that much worse than Prescott. The Cowboys simply don’t invest in backup quarterbacks so this is as much about 2021 as it is right now. If Prescott doesn’t sign his current deal you can use Dalton for a year or two until you draft Dak’s replacement or find another free agent. All around great move by the Cowboys

  26. Dak pushed it too far. Mediocre QB wants highest salary in NFL. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Karma is a ………..

  27. The NFL doesn’t need Diva Dak… Football is better off without all that self-appointed drama!

  28. Andy Dalton the Red Riffle is average with an ok O-line but very good with a better Oline. Watch his 2014-2016 highlights. Film tells the truth. Andy can win games.
Good for the Cowboys fans. Go win!

  29. Congrats Andy on going back home you’ll have your chance to show them you are a starter and thanks for all you did in Cincy!

  30. Whoa!!! Suddenly 33 mil per year probly doesn’t sound to bad to Dak and his idiot agent.

  31. Surprised at all the Dak hate. Why do so many people think they know the whole story on the negotiations & that either side is to blame for anything. I do think that Salton is a good pick up. I do also think that Dak has performed well & that Dallas’ defense has not gotten the stops that the team needed.

  32. That didn’t take long — I’m sure he had a talk with Coach McCarthy and liked what he heard.

  33. Although there were reports that the Patriots and Jaguars could be interested in signing Dalton and giving him a chance to start, he has instead taken a deal where he’ll be a backup.

    ———–

I can taste the saltiness all the way over here. Unfortunately for the agenda drivers, Andy signed with Dallas to be the starter, not back up. The reality and fact is Dak isn’t half the QB that Dalton is. It is exciting too, because Dalton excelled in Jay Grudens WCO, so seeing him in a loaded Offense running McCarthy’s WCO?

Let’s just say: Getcha popcorn ready!

  34. Jerry would of signed crazy legs Fitz if Miami cut him.
Dak is the absolute most overrated QB in the NFL.
And now Dalton should get a chance to be the starter. I think he is better then Dak. Now how will Zeke feel about this now? Is he going to get his diaper in a rash if his buddy does not win the starting job or they pull back that offer from him?!?!?!

  35. Between all his NON-social distancing and parties and mediocre play Dak better watch out…
    ___________

Yes they should totally cut him because he didn’t socially distance to your satisfaction. That is some sound logic.

  36. The Boys just made a bigger statement to Dak than The Pack made to Rodgers.

    Good for Andy.

    Dak, go away!

  37. Smart move by the Cowboys. I’m surprised. It gives them a fallback position in case the Dak situation goes south without closing the door on him. If Dalton was a bit younger I might have advocated a longer contract.

In today’s game where QBs are protected even when out of pocket and running, Dak has a little edge overall though Dalton is a better pocket passer. The question is whether or not he’s worth the kind of money demanded. I think not unless the Cowboys are prime contenders for a SB and Dak is the final piece of the puzzle. I think not.
The Raiders made that mistake and will suffer the cap carnage for years. The late Bill Walsh always said that the best deals are the ones you don’t make. But then HOF Walsh was the best play personell man of his generation trusted his ability to find a replacement. Do the Cowboys think they can find someone better than Dak?

In any case, best of luck to Dalton.

  38. Wisconsin’s Favorite Son Jeffrey Be Dahmed says:
And Aaron breathes a sigh of relief. The Pakres are desperate for a new QB, even after trading up in the draft to get his eventual replacement, so it’s good for Aron that he now knows Dalton isn’t going to come in and take his job this year.
    ——-
Andy Dalton replacing Aaron Rodgers? What brand of crack are you smoking?

  39. If the cowboys pull the franchise tag, I doubt Dak will make more than $15M this year. Its a tough market for QBs.

  40. Great signing for the Cowboys. The only reason Dak would start over Dalton is because they would be paying him 5 times as much. I would sign and trade Dak or something, Dalton is about to beat him out in camp anyway. Dalton has talent, I think he will flourish with that offense and under McCarthy.

  41. Cowboys have surrounded Dak with all the weapons he needs to succeed. If he can’t, Dalton takes over to lead them to a typical Cowboys disappointing season

  42. So if the Cowboys could somehow trade off Dak to some team like the Jacksonville Jaguars
for what they can get, this will be the best off season for the Cowboys in many many years.

  43. I always thought Dak and his agent were overplaying their hand! Too many out of work QBs lookig for work.

  44. Dak and his agent greedy. Now it will probably come back to bite them both. Jerry knows what he’s doing with Dak.

Don’t mess with old people. Especially if they own the team you play for.

  45. Warren Moon did okay in Canada before signing with the Houston Oilers. Dak, pack your bags, bid adieu to the Jones boys, and ply your wares in the CFL for a year or so before getting paid by a team who needs a leader and a QB. Who knows, maybe Dalton is the answer for the Dallas offense, given an ascendant Michael Gallup, the laid-back Amari Cooper, and now Lamb.

  46. This doesn’t strike me as good for Dalton. It would be different if I thought they were actually going to play him. But they still seem intent on rolling with Prescott, who hasn’t missed a game in his career.

Dalton’s better than he’s been given credit for. So sticking him behind a young, durable player makes no sense to me. He’s going to waste a really valuable part of his career.

If they actually showed some guts here and showed Prescott the door, I’d be impressed. But otherwise, this looks like the worst possible way for Dalton to jump-start his career. Maybe one year won’t hurt too much.

  47. Now the Cowboys should withdraw the tag and tell Prescott, “come back when you’re ready to play for $25 million. We’ll we waiting.” And that would be generous – no other team would pay him close to that much.

  48. I am not a Cowboys fan, so I hate this move. I want Jerry to pay Dak $40 million/yr. Now Jerry gets a slightly better QB for peanuts. If he trades Prescott for some prime draft picks, I’m really going to be mad.

I’ve got to admit, Dallas is having a really good off season. Starting Dalton and letting Prescott go would make them a real powerhouse for the next few years.

  49. How about them Cowboys. You put Dalton behind that 0-line and skilled positions he’s better than Dak Prescott

  50. First Jerry pays everyone else but Dak and now he signs Dalton. I think the relationship between Dak and the Cowboys is forever damaged. I don’t see how you come back from this.

  51. Dak Prescott- 30 TDs 11 Ints 65% completion pct. 4902 yards. 99.7 QBR
    Andy Dalton – 16 TDs 14 Int’s 59% completion pct. 3494 yds. 78.3 QBR.

    Dalton better than Dak?

    I don’t think so.

  52. Wow. If you want a smart team oriented guy in Dallas , you got it . Dalton needs support, and Dallas has it, everywhere. Not flashy, but saving 30 million gives them options. GREAT backup if that’s his role. His fire is stoked. Dallas you made a great decision.

  53. I wonder how Prescott and Dalton will get along after Dalton costing Prescott approximately 10 mil/season.

  54. I don’t think Dak is going anywhere this year.
He will play one year under the tag.
After that, it’s a free for all in big D.

  55. People don’t like greed…

Especially during a pandemic with 30 million Americans out of work.

This might be the year that dak’s greed and over inflated sense of self-worth cost him 30 million dollars

  56. My wish for Dalton is he is MVP of Super Bowl and gets a one year 50 million dollar contract. Two reasons: 1. He is a very good QB 2. His value as a team member far exceeds most athletes. BTW, I have been a Steeler fan longer than most of you have lived !!!

  57. Dak Prescott (after he loses his job in the first 4 weeks): “I thought it would be fun to fight you Dalton—I really did.”

  58. Real question is, will the slavish media start calling Dalton Andy now that he’s in Dallas?

  59. Giants fan here…..I don’t like this one bit….Please give dak 40 mill for 6 years.

  60. Knowing Mike McCarthy as well as we do in GB,….. Dalton is a good grab.
Mike likes a controlled short passing game along with some run plays. The concept is to pull the safeties and corners up closer towards the line of scrimmage. That opens up inside seam passes for big plays down the middle. The back shoulder sideline pass is another popular McCarthy call.
Dalton has those capabilities. If he can fire a bullet for a WR screen pass,.. he has potential in a McCarthy offense.

I always thought Dak and his agent were overplaying their hand! Too many out of work QBs lookig for work.
    ______________________________

And those out of work QBs are out of work for a reason! BTW which out of work QBs that are worth a damn are you speaking of? I know Cam is on the list but he’s more concerned about his wardrobe than winning, I wouldn’t have him on my team if I were a GM or HC.

The problem with the NFL is they tried to turn it into a passing league without giving a single thought to where they were going to get all the passing QBs they needed to do it, that’s why every year 10-12 teams are or should be looking for a new QB. It’s a shame that there are over 2bil men in the world between 20-40 and we can’t find 32 that deserve to be starting QBs in the NFL, SAD!

Still don’t have an elite QB.
    ______________________

Neither does 25 other teams! Fact is the list of elite QBs is a very short list.

  63. Great move for the cowboys. Good move for Dalton – one year on a good team in a QB-heavy FA year with the opportunity to get a better deal in DAL or elsewhere next year (though he did sell himself cheaply).

Bad move for Dak. Now he’s got to play on the franchise tag, unless it’s pulled, and there will be no long term contract for Dak this year unless it’s heavily weighted in the team’s favor. Worse news for the rest of the NFCE, as Dalton is in some ways as good or better a QB as Dak.

DAL is having a tremendous offseason, and on paper they should easily win their division and advance deep into the playoffs. On paper … but we’ll see what happens on the field.

  64. What’s with Jerrah’s love affair with red headed backup QB’s??? Dalton will be the coach in 5 yrs too… Clapper part deux!

  65. Good move by the Cowboys who should rescind their exclusive offer to Dak and replace it with a non exclusive offer and take the two 1st round draft picks for a trade! Use the picks for a QB in the next draft and let Dalton lead the Cowboys! Win Win!

  66. Love the Cowboys fans getting all jolly over Dalton and saying Dak is done…. 0-4, with 1 TD and 6 picks in the postseason, yeah, they got themselves a winner lol.

  67. Jerry Jones is treating Dak just like he did DeMarco Murray. Franchise him twice and then kick him of the team. Dak better start looking for a new team.

  68. This is probably the best move Jerry Jones has made since he traded for Charles Haley.

  69. Happy for Andy. He did a lot for us here in Cincy and deserves a real shot. Plus he gets to go home!

He is getting 1/10th of what they will have to pay Dak. I would rescind the tag and let him walk. They prob get a 3rd round supplemental pick next year.
Dalton has played close to MVP caliber when he has protection so, if the Boys’ line is solid he will do well.

  70. Funny how Patriot fans are trying to stay relevant. Go away. Go watch The Last Dance.

  71. Drafting a wide receive and signing a free agent quarterback. How did the Cowboys get so smart? Oh yeah, the hired Mike McCarthy.

  72. who is the agent for dak……he is obviously giving bad advice to dak……..playing hardball caught up to him……dak should fire him

  73. Dak’s 2019 ranking among NFL quarterbacks:

    #8 (don’t remember who)
    #11 NFL.com
    #13 Sporting News

And he’s demanding unprecedented top quarterback money????

  74. Remember, Jerry is a former oil Wildcatter and they are they ultimate risk takers! I think McCarthy, Stephen and Jerry will do a cost/benefit analysis and it will turn out to be a 50/50 chance that Dak stays or goes!

  75. I have been calling this and posting this for days now. Now that Dalton is signed put Non exclusive tag on Dak or trade him for 2 No 1s. Sign Newton as the Backup QB

  76. Patriot fans, why are you relieved?? You guys are signing Cam Newton!!! 🤣

2460, you’re going on the assumption that Jerrah still has his marbles…

    _______________________________________________________________________

Jeerah’s marbles didn’t seem out of place during the draft while outperforming
all the great NFL GM geniuses on all the top teams.
Dak’s contract negotiations isn’t about dollar amount.
    It’s about contract length.
Dak wants 4 years while Jerry wants 5 or more years.

  78. “The Raiders made that mistake and will suffer the cap carnage for years”

Are talking about Derek Carr’s contract? If you are, then what are you talking about? At the present time, Carr is on a team-friendly contract, his cap hit is in the low 20’s, and the Raiders had plenty of cap space this year.

  79. Great signing by the Cowboys. Dalton is a decent QB and it gives the Cowboys some leverage on Dak which they will resign. I am suprised other QB needy teams didn’t sign Dalton first though.
