Getting Stefon Diggs out of the NFC helped persuade Vikings to trade him

At the Scouting Combine, Simms and I asked Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman, who famously said in 2013 that the Vikings “have no intent to trade Percy Harvin,” to look into the camera and say that the Vikings have no intent to trade Stefon Diggs.

Said Spielman, “Stefon Diggs is a Minnesota Viking.”

He isn’t now, traded only a few weeks later to Buffalo. With Spielman appearing recently on #PFTPM, I asked him what happened to make the team decide that keeping Diggs in Minnesota would no longer work.

“We weren’t looking to trade Stefon at all,” Spielman insisted. “I know we had just signed him under a contract as a young explosive playmaker that had a lot of great years that he has been here, we drafted him in the fifth round and he has developed into one of the top receivers but, you know, when opportunities come your way and we felt that it was a great deal for Buffalo to get a player of that caliber and we felt we got in exchange the fair amount of draft picks we would have looked for if we were going to trade him, and it ended up happening that we did trade him.”

As the Vikings evaluated the offer they received from the Bills, which included a first-round pick and three other selections, one factor that helped tip the balance was that they would be getting Diggs out of the NFC.

“I don’t know if we would have traded him to Green Bay or Detroit or Chicago . . . but it does help when you can get him into a different conference than us potentially playing against him,” Spielman said.

The Vikings won’t see Diggs again in the regular season until 2022. Unless both teams make it to the Super Bowl before then. Which would be a compelling, something’s-gotta-give championship game, given that Minnesota and Buffalo are a combined 0-8 at that level.

Back to Harvin, the former first-round pick of the Vikings recently has said he’d like to return to the NFL. So, in order to take things full circle, I asked Spielman to close the interview with this line, and he complied: “We have no intent to sign Percy Harvin.”

  1. If Buffalo and Minnesota ever did meet in a Championship game, the overall stench of historic and pathetic losing would be unbearable, while the game itself would most likely end in a 0-0 tie.

  2. Having signed Justin Jefferson with the first-round pick they got from the Bills, the Vikings won that trade, not even counting the only draft picks they got in trade for Diggs.

The Bills got a WR with a big contract – that could get bigger – who left MN because he wasn’t getting the ball enough. The Bills are basically a run first team with a wildly inaccurate QB. Difficult to see how that ends well. Has any diva WR wanting a trade worked out for the acquiring team? Diggs isn’t as bad as most, but still… there is no I in team.

  3. why do packers fan live in and on vikings talk boards 24/7?! I’ll never get it, go do something with your lives and at least get out of moms basement for once, it’s always the same ol losers to top it off. Never witnessed such an odd obsession, it’s almost like you care more about the vikes than your own team, suppose the offseason is pretty boring drafting in the F grade.

  4. Waffle, would you say that stench would be better or worse than the packers in the 2015 NFC championship game?

  5. Diggs didn’t want to be there. He was a distraction when he was. He’s a great player who needed to someplace else. It happens in real life all the time. They got a haul for him. Everybody wins. Now if we can get that Offensive line playing like Dallas’, and a new secondary playing like the one in 2016, maybe we’ve got something.

  6. I dont get it…if you’re so fearful of playing against him ,you are basically saying he’s a great talent…..and of course you dont want that talent on YOUR OWN team.

Diggs didn’t want to be there

    +++++

He did on July 31, 2018 when he signed his contract extension.

  8. Not just out of the division – they don’t want to see Diggs before the Super Bowl you see…

  9. It’s nice to see the Vikings use that pick from the bills on a top prospect rather than trading it up for a reach backup qb

  10. Diggs is a complainer. We all know these people in life – neighbors, coworkers, family members….sometimes you can put up with it, sometimes you can’t.

He complained so much, that the Vikings felt his complaining was more of detriment than his talent was helpful.

If you think he’s super talented, then think about how much he must have been complaining.

Good luck Buffalo, these kind of people dont change. He might be a good teammate for a year, but his true self will come out at some point.

  11. I hate the idea that there always has to be a winner and a loser to any NFL trade. Can’t both teams end up with a good deal? We sure as hell needed Diggs and we paid a good price for him. Vikings are happy and the Bills are happy.

If anyone knows stench it would be packer fans – they are known to take shots off of dumpsters when tailgating. So they are literally nose deep in said stench.

  13. Not a smart trade on the part of the Bills. They could have retained the draft picks and got a receiver that by next year would be better than Diggs.
Hard to believe that with a young QB they were thinking only of 2020, not beyond.

  14. The Bills are basically a run first team with a wildly inaccurate QB.

That’s alright, Spieldope has thrown away plenty of high picks on those too.

Tarvaris Jackson, 2nd round pick. (64th overall)
Christian Ponder, 1st round pick. (12th overall)
Teddy Bridgewater 1st round pick. (32nd overall)
The Sam Bradford rental of 17 games, 1st and 4th round picks. (14th and 128th overall)

Yes, I think it’s alright to have Brian Gutekunst roll the dice a little on a prospect who’s future in this league has yet to be written.

You prefer to reach for QB’s through trades and free-agent dollars. To each their own.

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve posed this same question to Viking fans in Packer stories, I’d have a lot of nickels.

  18. Gilmore will lock him down and he will have a meltdown. With a young QB that’s a recipe for disaster and has potential to tear the team apart.

  19. Josh Allen will not lead any team to a Super Bowl. The Bills should have signed Dalton, or they should grab Newton because all that talent will go to waste.

  20. I love the Jefferson pick but I already miss Diggs. He will always be one of my favorite Vikings.

  21. This was a good trade for both teams. The Bills wanted a #1 receiver. They are in win now mode. This was a ” Deep Draft ” for WR, but when you look at the 5th year option on the class of 2017, no 5th year options have been exercised on First Round WR. These guys should be in their prime. It is not always a sure thing.
Buffalo gave up a 1st, 5th & 6th. They were projected to take AJ Epenesa with their first round pick by many mock drafts. ( They got him in the 2nd ) The 5th and 6th round picks were acquired from teams last year in trades of Veterans just before cuts. Wyatt Teller G to Cleveland for a 5th & 6th and Russell Bodine C to the Patriots for a 6th. Both of these players would have had to be cut if the trades weren’t made. They also gave up a 4th for 2021, but have an additional 5th. Vikings got a 1,5,6 this year and a 4th next year.
The Bills Roster is so deep this year, they wouldn’t have roster space for all the players if they kept all their draft picks. Win for both teams. Look for the Bills to trade some Veterans again toward the end of training camp and bring in more picks to trade in future drafts.

  22. Diggs is a hot head and plays with a ton of passion. Everyone on the team put up with him knowing Diggs just wanted to win and rolled with it. I don’t know what the Vikings could do to keep him happy. He was given a huge contract got a ton of balls thrown his way. I was sad to see him go, but as of now it probably was for the best.

As for Percy Harvin. I bought his jersey and wasn’t to broken hearten to give it away…

  23. I honestly can’t blame Diggs for complaining. Vikings are run-first and Kirk loves his checkdowns. I can’t imagine being happy as a deep threat WR in that offense.

  24. His job is to be a teammate, not a one man show. Selfish people are just a distraction to the big picture; Hence, buh bye. Hopefully it goes better than Sidney rice’s post-favre gig.

  25. Dont kid yourself with last years statistics. Josh Allen has one of the BEST long ball arms in the league (look it up–he’s got a cannon) but last year they did NOT have a long threat.

Now they do. THIS year Josh gonna be LOOKING for Diggs.

    Gonna be fun —
fun for Josh… AND for Diggs.

  26. I lost all respect for Diggs after he posted a video of himself wearing a Cardinals shirt while working out. The guy only thinks of himself, and this is a team sport. You only care about your own personal stats? Then go give bowling or golf a try Diggs. Glad he is gone now.

  27. Told you for Diggs was a me-first Diva for several years, but the Purples couldn’t see it until he wore the Cardinal shirt.

No one wins until we see what Diggs provides for Allen and the Bills.

  29. For the record, Stefon signed his contract extension in July 2018. In 2018, the Vikings were absolutely a pass-first offense with John DeFilippo as OC, until he got fired late in the season. Then, before the 2019 season, they hired Gary Kubiak and Kevin Stafanski to handle the offense. They chose to (and were chosen by the organization because they would) make the offense into a run first offense. Stefon was most likely a very happy camper in the Vikings organization when he signed his extension. Then, when they totally changed the offensive scheme, he became unhappy. That is the only reason I’m aware of that he wanted out. He never whined or complained before 2019.

  30. So you have a wide receiver who isn’t getting the face time he thinks he should get? Seriously, the other 31 teams run the football – some of them have a player who throws, catches, and then runs with the football and still loses in a playoff game.

If I were on a team, I’d rather have someone who works hard to make plays so the team can win instead of someone who is in it for himself and winning be damned.

  31. Stefon Diggs was very happy with John DeFilippo in 2018 when he caught 102 passes, most of which were behind the line of scrimmage, he averaged 10 yards per catch, and the team missed the playoffs. He was not happy in 2019 when his role was to be a deep target, the plays that never worked were removed from the playbook, he led the league in deep catches, he had a career high in yards, and the team made the playoffs. That tells you all you need to know.

Given that Kirk Cousins has the second-highest completion percentage in NFL history, I’d say you’re a bit off on that assessment.
